PAGE 2 TITAN TRIBUNE Tdap Immunizations All students entering 7th grade are required by law to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap. Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for months. The immunity received from either early childhood immunizations or pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis. Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools, and communities against pertussis. First Dance their class schedule unless they have a Tdap immunization record on file. There is no grace period this year. Please turn your immunization record into the office as soon as possible. Get ready for the first dance of 2013-2014 school year on Friday, September 6th. Tickets are $5 each and will be on sale September 3rd6th during lunch. If you wait until Friday to buy your ticket the price is $8. The 6th grade dance is from 3-4:30 pm and the 7th/8th grade dance is from 6-8pm in the multi-purpose room. The school dress code and school behavior rules apply. No inappropriate dancing will be tolerated. Freak dancing is NOT allowed. 7th grade students will not receive We Dress for PE! Athletics & Activities Students will be wearing uniforms for P.E. classes. Uniforms consist of navy blue shorts and a light grey T-shirt. Uniforms with the school logo will be available for purchase during our Back to School Check-in day and during the first two weeks of P.E. classes. Shirts and shorts are $10 each. Plain navy shorts and grey T-shirts are also acceptable. Non-suits result in a lowering of student’s grades for P.E. Sweat pants and shirts will also be available during the winter months. Athletics, Clubs and other activities are a GREAT way for students to get involved at school. Encourage your child to join. They don’t have to be a great athlete or a talented chess player – they simply need to have an interest in the program. To qualify for athletics and activities, your child will need to maintain a “C” (2.0) or better grade point average in math, language arts and overall, as well as meeting behavior requirements. We encourage ALL of our TBMS students to be successful and join in! Electronic Devices Cell phones have turned out to be a tremendous distraction at the middle school level. In order to allow for before and after-school emergencies, students may bring cell phones to school as long as they are turned OFF during school hours, 8:00am to 2:40pm, and left in the student’s backpack or purse. They will be confiscated if they are out or used during school hours and Detention Notices will be given. Multiple infractions could result in referrals and school suspension. We appreciate student and family cooperation in this area. Students may bring electronic book readers to be used during silent reading secessions. If the book reader is used inappropriately during class teachers reserve the right to confiscate the reader and issue a detention for inappropriate use. TBMS is not responsible for any damaged, lost or stolen items that are brought to school. VOLUME 8, ISSUE 1 PAGE 3 Cafeteria Students may purchase breakfast or lunch at TBMS for the following prices: Breakfast …….$1.75 Lunch ……….$3.00 Breakfast is served at 7:45 a.m. Lunches may be purchased during lunch hours in the cafeteria. Students may put money on their accounts by depositing cash or a check made out to “TBMS Cafeteria” before school or during their lunch hour. The Cafeteria DOES NOT allow charging. Applications for free or reduced meals can be printed off the TBMS website. They must be filled out for each school year; one application is adequate for each household. For families who received free or reduced meals last year, their status will be continued while the new application is processed until the end of September. You may check your child’s school menu balance online for free, and you may use your VISA or MASTERCARD to place money on your child’s account for a nominal transaction fee. Simply go to: https://www.myschoolbucks.com Attendance Attendance is very important to student success. Poor attendance usually results in poor grades. Parents should make every effort to have their child at school every day. TRAVEL STUDY DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR IS DISCOURAGED AS STUDENTS MISS VALUABLE INSTRUCTION, DISCUSSION, ACTIVITIES AND LAB EXPERIENCES. The average TBMS student misses no more than five days each school year. Excessive absences may result in attendance letters and a referral to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB). If a child is absent, the parent or guardian should call the attendance office (434-7996) as soon as possible. If no phone contact can be made, a note must be sent with the student to the attendance office on the day s/he returns. If an absence is not cleared within 3 days, the absence will be unexcused. If a student is absent for more than 3 days, a doctor’s note is required. If a student arrives late to school, s/he must go to the attendance office for a “Late Slip”. The reason for the late arrival must be verified by the parent or guardian. Tardies are a huge distraction. Students miss valuable academic time when arriving even a few minutes late. Excessive tardiness to any class will result in disciplinary action (6 tardies = detention may be assigned) If a student needs to check out of school early for an appointment, s/he must bring a note to the office before school to receive an “early dismissal” slip. This allows the student to meet their parent in the office without delay. If a note is not sent, the student will be called for once the parent arrives in the office. Any student leaving school before the end of the school day with parental permission must be signed out through the front office by the parent, guardian or other adult listed on the student’s emergency card.
