MONTHLY REPORT
PFDDUCTION OF IRON AND STEEL IN CANADA
AUGUST .- 1941
PIG IQN - Production of pig iron in Canada during August totalled 105,795
tons as compared with 102,005 tons made in the preous month and 88,885 tons in
August, 1940. The August total included 86,972 tons of basic iron, 7,604 tons of
foundry iron and 11,219 tons of malleable iron.
Blast furnace charges for August, with the totals for eight months in
parenthesis included 182,851 (1,465,087) tons of iron ore, 49,369 (304,226) short
tons of limestone and 103,211 (829,452) short tons of coked From the charges for
the first eight months of this year a total of 833351 tons of pig iron were made
compared with 734,436 tons and 422,028 tons produced during the corresponding periods
of 1940 and 1939, respectively.
FERF.O• LLOYS - Output of 16, 251 tons of ferro-alloys in August compares
with 17,599 tons in July and 9,697 in August, 1940 This month's total was made up
of nine different grades, listed according to tonnage as follows: ferrosillcon,
ferrochrome, ferromanganese, silicornc'nganese, cpiege1isen, ferrochrome silicon,
calcium silicon, ferrophosphorus and silicospiege1eisen
STEEL INGOTS AND cASTINGS - Production of steel ingots and direct steel
castings totalled 202 ; 746 tons in August compared with 197,316 toxic in July and
172,210 tons in August of a year ago, This month2s total included 193034 tons of
ingots and 9,712 tons of castings.
During the first eight months of this year the cumulative production of
steel amounted to 1 1 548497 tons compared with 1,300,033 tons and 813,309 tons during the corresponding periods of 1940 and 1939 respectively.
PRODUCTION IN THE UNITED STATES (From the tIIronfIT) - Th.iring August,
when furnaces were reporter to be working at 975 per cent of capacity, the production of coke pig iron in the United States averaged 154,562 tons a day compared with
153,896 tons in July. A net gain of 2 a:ctive furna'es was recorded, '4 being put in
b1ot and 2 taken off.
