We are a nonprofit organization that communicates for, about, and with National Park Service employees of
all disciplines. Our mission is to promote and enhance the professions, spirit and mission of NPS employees,
support National Park Service management and the perpetuation of the National Park System, and provide a
forum for professional enrichment.
Join us for the 37th annual Ranger Rendezvous October 22-26, 2014, at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes
Park, Colorado. Only three miles from Rocky Mountain National Park, the location promises spectacular
scenery, abundant opportunities for outdoor exploration and lots more. It’s the perfect setting for a
conference about national parks and the people who protect them.
Book your lodging early at the YMCA of the Rockies Long’s Peak Lodge. The YMCA of the Rockies is kid
friendly. The venue offers a wide selection of children’s programs, such as scavenger hunts, nature games,
night hikes, and arts and crafts. Make this year's Rendezvous a family activity.

Workshops
Jack Harris - Leadership Development
Cost: $35 per session, $100 for all three sessions
Jack Harris is an internationally known speaker, workshop facilitator,
trainer, and keynote presenter. He has conducted training for
professional associations, international corporations, Fortune 500
companies, non- profit organizations, state and federal
governments, law enforcement and public safety agencies around
the globe for more than 20 years.
With an insightful understanding of human nature and a good sense
of humor, his presentations are entertaining and filled with useful
information, not just theory and trendy “buzz-words.” Jack draws on his unique
combination of law enforcement, management and behavioral science experience, as well
as his personal passion for practical solutions, to provide results-oriented training that helps
people from all backgrounds develop the skills they can use to excel in everyday situations.
Keeping Good People Good
October 22, 8:00am-12:00pm (space limited to 40 people)
NPS employees begin their careers as passionate, idealistic, enthusiastic people who are
often heard saying “I can’t believe they pay me to do this job.” With time, they are exposed
to the subtle day-to-day pressures and demands that can be devastating to even the most
experienced and capable people. This presentation is aimed at helping the participants
develop a personal strategy to prevent the day-to-day pressures from destroying the very
things they work so hard to build. They will learn techniques to help create the balance and
resilience that is essential for their long-term professional and personal wellbeing.
Management’s Role in Keeping Good People Good
October 22, 1:00pm-5:00pm (space limited to 40 people)
Organizations spend a significant amount of time, energy and money hiring and training
good people, but that is just the beginning. After the hiring process is over, managers have
an important role in helping Keep Good People Good. Positive leadership, a proactive
approach to problem solving, the “Courage to Communicate,” and holding people
respectfully accountable are key to preventing employee-related problems. Managers are
responsible for the guidance, mentorship and coaching that helps employees improve
performance and achieve their full potential. This program is aimed at helping managers
apply the theories of leadership & management to everyday, real-life situations and
develop practical skills needed to become more effective and confident leaders.
Communication Skills . . . They do make a difference
October 23, 8:00am-12:00pm (space limited to 40 people)
The ability to resolve conflicts, address differences, minimize misunderstandings, interact
well with others, work as a team and enhance relationships (of all kinds) is directly related
to our ability to communicate. This workshop is designed for people who want to
communicate more effectively, build better relationships (at work, home and play), gain a
better understanding into the power of perceptions & assumptions, and are looking to have
some fun learning practical communication skills they can apply to everyday, real-life
situations.

Workshops
John Fielder - Colorado Landscape Photography
October 23, 1:00pm-6:30pm
Cost: 2 hr. slide show, free; 3½ hour hands-on workshop, $100
(hands-on workshop space limited to 12 people)
John Fielder has generously donated his services to ANPR as a fundraising event. His halfday photography workshops are generally valued at $250 per person. This is a great
opportunity to learn photography techniques directly from John Fielder, while helping to
support ANPR.
Find out how John Fielder creates his award-winning images and gain a deeper
understanding of the visual aspects of nature. In a comprehensive two-hour slide show
lecture, learn how to improve your compositions and get an insider’s look at professional
techniques, including which bells and buttons you need to use on your camera. At the end
of the lecture, John will discuss the most important tools used in post-processing programs
such as Photoshop and Lightroom.
Then spend 3 hours up to sunset in Rocky Mountain National Park photographing side-byside with John. He will show you his compositions in his LCD, and he will critique yours. Any
type of digital camera, point & shoot or SLR, is appropriate. If you bring an SLR, bring a
tripod too. This workshop is open to all levels of photographers, beginner to advanced. It is
designed to help students reach at least their next level of ability and enrollment is limited
to ensure the highest quality experience.
John Fielder has worked tirelessly to promote the protection of
Colorado’s ranches, open spaces, and wildlands during his 30-year
career as a nature photographer. His photography has influenced
people and legislation, earning him recognition including the Sierra
Club’s Ansel Adams Award in 1993 and, in 2011, the Aldo Leopold
Foundation’s first Achievement Award given to an individual. Over
40 books have been published depicting his Colorado photography.
He lives in Summit County, Colorado, and operates a fine art
gallery, John Fielder’s Colorado, in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe. He teaches
photography workshops to adults and children. Information about John’s work can be
found at www.johnfielder.com.

Workshops
Paul Anderson - Search & Rescue
Find 'Em: Initial Response Incident Commander
October 21, 8:00am-5:00pm; October 22, 8:00am-12:00pm
Cost: $25 (space limited to 24 people; register by October 13)
Learn about the state-of-the-art in missing person search planning!
This interactive workshop will introduce the newest and most
comprehensive textbook on search and rescue management, will
focus on the duties and responsibilities of the initial response
incident commander, and will provide instruction on the use of
WinCASIE search incident computer software.
Paul Anderson, ANPR life member, coauthor of Find 'Em: A Guide for Planning the Missing
Person Incident Response, retired Superintendent of Denali National Park and Preserve,
and past president of the National Association for Search and Rescue, has spent over 40
years as a volunteer and paid field search team member, leader and incident commander.
He has participated and led search and rescue activities in ROMO, BIBE, SHEN, GRCA,
DEWA, and YOSE. As Superintendent of Denali, he provided support and oversight for the
mountaineering operations on Mt. McKinley and the associated search and rescue
activities.
Dr. Lu Ann Jones - Oral History
Learning by Listening: Conducting Effective Oral
History Interviews
October 23, 8:00am-12:00pm
Cost: $25 (space limited to 20 people)
This workshop is a great opportunity to learn about all aspects of
oral history. Participants will be introduced to oral history project
planning; legal and ethical issues; recording technologies (audio
and video); what to do before, during, and after the interview;
processing and preserving interviews; and using oral history in Web sites and publications.
Participants will conduct and critique a short interview on-site during the workshop.
Workshop leader Dr. Lu Ann Jones has taught weeklong oral history workshops for the
National Park Service and is an adviser for the ANPR Oral History Project. ANPR's oral history
project joins a long tradition in the NPS of using interviews to safeguard the collective
memory and expertise of those who have shaped the Service over the last 50 years. It also
advances the top priorities of NPS Director Jonathan Jarvis by passing on important lessons to
a younger generation of Park Service personnel. The information collected during these
interviews can be used immediately as part of workforce development and leadership
succession. It is also vital to the long-term stewardship of the agency's history.
