Headlines
This is a relatively quiet week with regards to
student events, following a busy time this half term.
Next Monday, 10 February you are all welcome to
attend the annual House Music competition in the
SandPit Theatre. This will be a great evening of entertainment as the six houses battle out once more. Tickets are available from the SandPit Theatre box office if
you would like to come.
Year 12 have been busy taking their mock AS
examinations and we look forward to seeing the results,
once the papers have been marked. We are also receiving a large number of applications to join the Sixth
Form in September 2014, so it looks as though the
Sixth Form will continue to increase in size.
We are almost ready for our major Staff
Conference of the year, taking place next week. I am
sure the students need no reminding that we finish on
Wednesday 12th February at 3.00pm for the half term
holiday. There are two major trips taking place over
half term – the ski trip and the next visit to Farafenni
High School in the Gambia. I would like to thank all
the staff involved in organising these amazing trips for
their hard work, and I am sure they will be wonderful
visits once again.

Herts County Maths Challenge
E-Learning Focus
Last week, eight Year 7 students represented Sandringham in the Herts County Maths Challenge. Our heat
took place at Monk’s Walk School in Welwyn, and saw
us competing against ten other teams from the wider
Hertfordshire area. Our students faced questions demanding a wide range of mathematical skills including
logical thinking, estimating and accuracy. It was a high
scoring heat which means, unfortunately, that neither of
our two teams will progress to the final. However, the
ability, enthusiasm and competitive spirit of our students made us extremely proud of them, and we are
hoping for even better results next year. Well done to
Mark Herbert, Emma Skerry, George Taylor and Chris
Williams on our A half team, and Felix Ali, Callum
Hayes, Carlos Romero Martinez and Kieren Rowles on
our B half team.
Sandringham is committed to providing a world-class
learning environment, blending resources and approaches to improve learning outcomes for your child.
SAM Learning - https://www.samlearning.com/
SAM Learning is an online learning tool
available to all Key Stage 3 and 4 students at
Sandringham. Login details for students were
distributed as a sticker in student planners.
SAM Learning covers the majority of subjects and has a
variety of self-paced activities that help secure key
subject knowledge and give opportunities for exam technique practice. National research shows that on average,
students who spend 10 or more hours on SAM Learning
gain one third of a grade higher overall. For Year 11,
this is tied in to our iCard reward scheme with a termly
prize draw.
Please encourage students to use the tool as part of their
revision for summer exams.
Bring Your Own Device to Sandringham
We are considering a plan to allow students to bring their own
portable electronic devices to
school to help with their learning
in lessons.
The first step in the project is to
understand what technology students have available to
them already. We would be very grateful if you could
complete the survey at the following location: (takes < 2
minutes)

Velocity 2014
Life Drawing Classes
The annual Dance show, VELOCITY,
kicked off with a bang on Monday 27th
January, with a dress rehearsal matinee to four local Primary schools and then evening performances on Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday to packed out audiences. The
natural state of the first half demonstrated the exceptional
work of SYCD and Tuxedo dance companies, as well as
exam pieces and winners of the student choreography
competition. The SandPit was then transformed into ‘The
Sand Club’ for the second half and for the first time featured The Sandringham Swing Band. They performed
some of the great jazz classics including ‘Fly me to the
moon’, ‘Cell block tango’ and ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’. The
performers worked endlessly to display their exceptional
Marian Bright talent and passion for Dance and we have had great pleasDirector of Learning: Visual Arts ure in seeing the students enjoy the experience. Each
night exceeded the previous with the students’ high energy
and enthusiasm, as well as the amazing performances by
Pupil Premium – Changes to Pupil Premium the two resident companies Tuxedo and SYCD. The
eligibility for children adopted from public
Dance Faculty is extremely proud of the entire cast and

crew. It is always our highlight of the year and we are
already looking forward to Velocity 2015! If you would

The Visual Arts faculty is once again
running a course of life drawing classes
for Sixth Form students. Students are
able to draw a professional life model
and are taught a variety of techniques
and approaches to drawing the human
figure. These classes really challenge students and
give them an understanding of traditional and contemporary approaches to drawing, which are transferrable
to drawing other subjects. These classes are particularly important for students who are applying to visual
arts based courses, where students are expected to
have life drawing as part of their portfolios.
From April 2014, schools in England can receive the
Pupil Premium for children adopted from care, or
who left care under a Special Guardianship Order on
or after 30 December 2005. Schools can also claim
the Pupil Premium for children who left care under a
Residence Order on or after 14 October 1991.
The Pupil Premium is to help schools raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap with
their peers. It is paid to schools in respect of disadvantaged pupils in Reception to Year 11. The Government has extended the coverage of the Pupil Premium in recognition of on-going care and support
many adopted children require and a realisation that
their needs do not change overnight.
To enable your child’s school to claim the Pupil Premium, you will need to inform the school about your
child and provide supporting evidence; for example,
show the school a photocopy of the original Adoption
(Court) Order with sensitive information concealed,
e.g. the names of the birth parents. This will be copied and held in a secure location by school until the
information is required to receive the funding.

Velocity this year was an amazing experience. It allowed me to
express my love for dance and for me to step out of my comfort
zone. I enjoyed every minute of it! Can’t wait for Velocity
2015.
Hackim Benaziza – SYCD Company – 11S
Velocity was a great experience seeing all ages come together to
produce a variety of amazing dances. But we couldn’t do it
without all of the amazing teachers supporting us and helping us
on stage. I had never been in something like that before and I
am so glad that Miss Meeking and Miss Hebb gave me such a
fantastic opportunity.
Lucy Mair – Tuxedo Company – 7S
Velocity is a great show. You can choose from a big range of
dances to perform in the show and they are all taught by the
dance teachers Miss Meeking and Miss Hebb. It was great fun
learning them, but the show was even better!!
Oliver Taits – 7K
It was my first Velocity and I was quite nervous to see what it
was like, but it was really fun! I enjoyed trying on the costumes
and performing in Velocity was a quick way to meet new people. My group in ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’ had lots of fun and we all
worked well as a team when performing. Even though it was
quite stressful at times, we still all loved it!
Abigail Grant – 10B
We have produced a DVD of Velocity 2014, which we
have a licence to copy for those students involved in the
showcase. The DVD is professionally edited and of an
extremely high quality and comes in a slim-line case with
cover at a cost of £10. If you would like to order a DVD,
please complete and return the reply slip, with your payment, to the red box at the back of the hall by Tuesday
11th February.

Football
On Thursday, the Year 9 team played Bushey Academy in
the delayed 3rd round game of the County Cup. The weather
has played havoc with this game and we eventually had to
arrange the game to be played on a 3g pitch on Watford.
With the absence of 2 key players on the day, the team had to
pull together to get the result. They did just that and took
victory 4-2 to proceed to the next round and a tie with St.
Clement Danes school.
Friday saw the 1st XI play in the County Cup quarter final,
the first time the school has reached this stage at this age
group for a number of years. Unfortunately the game was
almost out of reach from the early minutes. With some poor
defending and a number of critical errors we found ourselves
in an almost impossible position of 3-0 down after 10
minutes. By half time this was 4. With a changed focus and
formation in the second half we won the second half 2-0 to
take the score 4-2 and we actually had some chances to reduce the deficit again, however it all came too late on. The
team now shifts its focus to the District Cup and a tie with
Nicholas Breakspear school.
This year’s Year 7/8 District Football tournament took place
at Nicholas Breakspear School, where we saw some strong
opposition. Our first game saw us play Beaumont in a tight
game, where there were some great attacks from players such
as Eve Shaw, Zoe Hook and Aimee Sheppard. The game
was so close that it finished 0-0 after normal time, which saw
Sandringham have to win from the penalty spot. After all
three penalties it was 2-2, which saw Mollie Herrington step
up to take a potential game winning penalty and score! She
then went on to save the next penalty to complete the victory
for Sandringham. The second game versus STAGS proved
to be an even tougher game. Some excellent performances
came from Izzy Hughes, Lorena Lees, Emily Giovanni and
Anni Hanton. In defence, Izzy Shaw was tough and didn’t
allow any attacking force from STAGS, whilst at the other
end Eve Shaw managed to score an excellent goal to win the
game for Sandringham. This allowed us to win the tournament, becoming district champions, well done to all involved! Player of the Tournament goes to Eve Shaw who
made an excellent impact and who also played for the Year
8s in their side of the tournament.
The Year 8 tournament saw competition in the form of
Townsend and Nicholas Breakspear. In the first game, Sandringham girls played Townsend in a toughly contested
game, where there were some excellent performances from
Emma Goldingay, Emma Wilkinson and Frankie Boost.
Some great goals were scored by Ellie Holder, Lorena Lees
and Eve Shaw. Unfortunately a goal was conceded, but the
game was won 3-1 to put the girls in a great position going
into their second game. In the second game versus Nicholas
Breakspear, the girls really started to put some excellent
passes together and dominate the attack. Ellie Holder scored
a hat-trick and there were some great efforts in defence from
Scout Newman-Booth and Maya Reid in goal. Two wins
completed the clean sweep to win the competition! Player of
the tournament goes to Ellie Holder.
The Year 9/10 girls football tournament saw a number of
schools combine their age groups to make one round robin
tournament. The girls first game was against a Nicholas
Breakspear side who put up a good fight. Well done to the
great striking force of Chloe Pettengell (who scored two) and
Rebecca McShane (who scored one). The game ended at 3-1
and some excellent performances came from Charlie Boyle,
Emily Caswell and Maya Yapp. The second game saw us up
against a tough STAGS side, who played some excellent
passing football. We were extremely strong in defence with
Abbie Charnock in goal and Erin Breen, the speed machine,
closing down every ball. Going forward on the counter attack, Sandringham looked impressive with Mel Godino,
Chloe Nichol and Ellen Fox bursting to get on the team sheet.
It ended up finishing 3-0, with a fantastic performance and
two fantastic goals from Nichol and Rebecca McShane
stamping her authority on the game. The last game in the
tournament saw the girls take on Roundwood Park who are
always strong in the competition. Sandringham started to
settle into playing together and moved the ball well up the
field to create a number of excellent goal scoring opportunities. A great performance came from Eliza Brown, always
giving herself a chance on goal and Chloe Pettengell bringing
the ball out from defence. The only goal of the game came
from Ellen Fox, who deservedly netted an excellent strike, to
secure three wins for the year 9s and 10s, who won the tournament. Congratulations girls, you all played a massive part
in all the games and the player of the tournament goes to
Rebecca McShane for dominating the midfield.
Rugby
The Year 7 team played Beaumont in absolutely terrible conditions on Friday afternoon. Sandringham were 7-0 up for
the first 10 minutes and really pressurised the Beaumont line.
However, things turned after Beaumont got two tries and
Sandringham started to be turned over in the breakdown.
Conditions worsened in the second half, heads went down
and the pace and power in the Beaumont back line scythed
through the limited Sandringham defence. The final score
was Beaumont 37 – Sandringham 7.
Cross Country
The County Cross Country Championships were cancelled on
Saturday, due to bad weather and Verulamium Park being out
of action for sporting events. Currently there is no alternative
date, however if any news filters through to us and a new date
is proposed, then we will be in contact with those students
who were selected.
On Thursday the Year 11 boys team played St. Columba’s.
The team have never beaten St. Columba’s at this age group
and with St. Columba’s being former National champions
with this group of players, the task was always going to be a
tough one. The game was close, although in the 2nd quarter
we let the opposition build an 18 point lead. This lead was
maintained, but never stretched throughout the game and
with both teams trading baskets, remained at 18 points in the
4th quarter. We did put a run together late on and pushed to
close the gap, eventually losing the game by 8 points. It was
a valiant effort by the team, without us really playing to our
potential.
On Monday the Year 7 boys played St. Albans Boys away.
After a number of games getting postponed recently, this was
the first occasion the team has had for a few weeks to showcase their talents and hard work this term. The game was a
very close affair for the first 3 quarters and the teams were
separated by just a point. Carlos Romero-Martinez, Kai
Hoyte and Ryan Orde were excellent and took their opportunities to attack the basket. During the 4th quarter, we played
some very structured offense that gave St. Albans very little
opportunity to get back into the game, eventually taking the
win 35-24. We will play Roundwood Park next Monday.
The Year 8 boys played St. Columba’s in the County League
on Tuesday and with a large squad put up a solid performance, however with not everyone playing to the best of
their ability and a number of players getting into foul trouble,
the team eventually lost by 9. With one game still to play,
the team can still reach the semi-final.
The Year 11 team played Queens’ in the County League,
(who were last year’s National Champions) and this was
their second tough game in consecutive weeks. The boys put
in a valiant effort, with only 7 players, after a number of boys
let the team down at the last minute and we were pleased that
the newly practised zone defence was effective. The game
was however out of reach late on in the 4th quarter with
Queens’ England player doing much of the damage. The
final score was 86-71.
For more news, fixtures and results don’t forget to follow us
@SandringhamPE on Twitter.
Netball
Well done to the Year 7 Netball team who beat St. Albans
High School last week 8-4, with Jess Pannese demonstrating
how influential she has been in the team this season.
Basketball
The Year 10 girls basketball team continue to develop their
individual skills and grow as a team. They played two games
last week in the County League and are still in with a chance
of reaching the play-off stage of the competition. They faced
Beaumont on Wednesday and in a very close game eventually got edged out 53-32, with Abi Charnock performing exceptionally well. On Thursday, they played Queens’ away
and took the victory 47-21 with a fantastic performance.
Emily Caswell and Chloe Pettengell were fantastic and have
left the girls with one game to play where victory would see
qualification to the semi-finals of the County Cup.
