Bleeding muscles and joints may be kept at rest by splinting, casting, or using crutches or a wheelchair. Replacement clotting factor is infused if needed • Ice packs applied immediately for 20 minutes, on and off, every 4 to 6 hours. This helps decrease the swelling and pain. You can wrap the ice in a towel or other covering so it is not applied directly to the skin • Compression applied to the affected area with a pressure bandage. Do not make the bandage too tight; keep it at a tolerable level • Elevation of the affected area of injury—above the level of the heart if possible Remember: After an injury, contact your health care provider for further guidance.
