Ann K Jones Fri 3, Sat 4, Sun 5 March
Ann Jones trained in Dance and Drama in Cheltenham, where she taught in a variety of educational establishments
from preparatory schools to colleges of further education. She was associated with the Cheltenham Competitive
Festival for many years and is now Drama Co-ordinator for the Mansfield Festival of Music and Drama.
Ann has directed and choreographed many productions around the UK including work for Gilbert and Sullivan
societies and Operatic and Dramatic groups. In her early days she ran classes for the YMCA and Salvation Army and
more recently trained members of the Church Army in effective communication as well as writing, choreographing and
producing local youth pantomimes.
In 1985 she was appointed Secretary of the Society of Teachers of Speech & Drama (STSD) and in 1999 she was
made the General Secretary. In 2002 she was awarded a Fellowship of the Society and was later given a Fellowship
by the Victoria College of Music & Drama.
She has written several articles for the STSD journal “Word Matters” and for Trinity College London, she co-wrote with
Robert Cheeseman (the Chief Examiner) a book on the teaching of Speech and Drama. Under her pen name, Ann
Kingsley, she has written many solos and duologues.
Ann continues to teach and prepares students for local festivals, examinations and auditions as well as examining for
English Speaking Board, Trinity College London and the New Era Academy of Speech & Drama.
Stephen Owen Fri 11, Sat 12, Sun 13 March
Stephen trained as a teacher of Drama, Speech and Movement at Trinity and All Saints’ College, University of Leeds.
After qualifying, he then studied for a number of years with Elinor Rutherford, gaining specialist teaching and
performance diplomas in all aspects of Speech and Drama Studies. As well as being responsible for the drama
curriculum in the schools where he worked, he also taught pupils of all ages and abilities privately, from complete
beginners to Licentiate (RAM) and Fellowship (LCM) level. He became an examiner for the English Speaking Board
and the Poetry Society and adjudicated at many festivals throughout the country.
In 1985 he was appointed to the headship of a primary school in Derbyshire, an experience he thoroughly enjoyed for
the next twenty-two years. It was during this period that he became a Religious Education Inspector for the Roman
Catholic diocese of Hallam. After retiring from school in 2007 he was appointed as an examiner for The London
Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and also resumed his work as an adjudicator for the British and
International Federation of Festivals.
When not examining or adjudicating, Stephen’s leisure time consists of seeing as many plays and operas as possible
