2017 CBS STOCK CAR RULES
As of 6/3/2017
RACEceiver required for All classes for 2017. Transponder Required, Must be a Westhold
transponder.(See General Rules for Transponder mounting) All cars are required to have a
CBS safety sticker before entering track. Mufflers are required.
The CBS Stock Car Class has been created as an entry level racing class. Its purpose and intent is to
keep race vehicles in original, stock condition with required safety equipment installed, to allow anyone
the ability and opportunity to build and maintain a racecar, to develop driver skills and experience at an
affordable level. Drivers & Cars in this class may not compete in other classes at Cotton Bowl
Speedway for 2017 race season The Cotton Bowl Speedway Technical Inspector is available before,
during and after each event to assist in application or interpretation of any technical rule.
Body and Frame:
Chassis must be an American made passenger car only. Metric framed GM or Ford cars are allowed.
Nova chassis are allowed. Station Wagons must be metric framed only with enclosed rear
compartment, El-camino’s and Ranchero’s ok. No other makes or models will be accepted. Frame must
remain unaltered in wheelbase and width as defined by OEM original specifications. 1978-1987 metric
chassis may be altered for clearance of right front tire only, with maximum alteration not to exceed onehalf inch (.5”). Uni-body sub-frames may be tied together. No Camaro, Firebirds, Cadillac, Town Cars,
Mustangs or Corvette Chassis allowed. No front wheel drive cars allowed. No commercial vehicles,
convertibles or sports cars. Altering original frame or wheelbase is not allowed. Minimum wheel base is
(108” - .5” ) per OEM specifications for stock factory production. No tubed chassis.
Body must remain OEM but does not have to match frame, older cars can be re-skinned with newer
style bodies but just for economical reasons, cannot be for performance. Doors, Hood, and Deck Lid
may be made from sheet steel 20 ga. Min. as long as they resemble stock. Frames or uni-body may be
X-braced for safety. Stock type bumpers are required to have straps to prevent hooking or may have
single 1 1/2” tube bumpers with capped ends. Subject to track approval, No Sharp Edges
Doors must be welded or bolted shut. All glass, plastic, fiberglass and trim must be removed from
racecar. Upholstery and plastic portion of the dash must be completely removed. No gutting of steel
interior except by the rules for hood, trunk/floor area, doors, and deck lid.
WEIGHT: Minimum weight is 3300 pounds with stock exhaust manifolds or minimum 3400 pounds with
headers after the race with driver.
Suspension (Front): No modifying of the suspension is allowed. Upper control arm brackets cannot be
moved. Cannot move lower control arms. Suspension parts must remain absolutely stock for that year,
make and model of car, except for upper control arms. May use a after market non-adjustable tublar
upper control arm that mounts in stock location.. This includes spindles, rotors, upper control arms,
lower control arms, ball joints, tie rods, tie rod sleeves, center link, pitman arm, idler arm, steering box
and trailing arms. All upper/lower trailing arm & upper/lower control arm bushings must be present;
however they may be replaced with after-market bushings. No mono-ball bushings. Bolt on Spindle
Savers are allowed. Upper Control Arm can be strengthened with a maximum of 3/8 inch cold roll or
rebar along the outer lip within the groove. Steel parts only.
Springs: Racing springs may be used. Rear coil spring must not extend through the stock spring
bucket and be same height both sides. Adjustable spring spacers are allowed. Steel leaf springs only,
may be after market OEM Type, may use lowering blocks. Any steel non-jack bolt type leaf spring
shackles are allowed, including multi-hole, no sliders. NO weight Jacks.
SHOCKS: Shock may be claimed for $25.00 Ea. Shocks must be steel OEM replacement shocks.
Shocks must be mounted using the OEM stock mounts in the stock location. No heims on shocks
allowed. No shock adapters. No rebuild-able, Air or adjustable shocks.
ROLL CAGE: Minimum 4 point roll cage with 3 driver side bars and 2 passenger side bars required
above frame (See Notes). Roll cage made of 1 ½ inch tubing with .095 wall thickness. Driver side door
plate recommended. Halo must be a minimum of 1” higher than the driver’s helmet. A single bay bar
per side is allowed, and may not extend past the idler arm or the steering box. Two vertical bars may be
attached to each bay bar to the frame. Maximum size is 1.5” inch O.D., .095” tubing. All roll cage welds
must be complete and pass safety inspection by tech officials. Floor pan may be cut for cage and subframe connectors, but must be replaced by a minimum of 20 gauge steel. X-bracing under the driver
(frame-to-frame) is allowed.
NERF BARS: A single rub bar is allowed on each side. Maximum size round tubing1.5” x .095” or box
tubing 1” X 2”. May be attached to main cage only at the front and rear section of the nerf bar. This
means only two (2) attachment points are allowed. No open tubing allowed. Tubing must be capped or
rounded with no sharp edges. Rub bars may not extend past outside of tires.
WINDSHIELD BARS: A minimum of three vertical windshield bars are required. Must be a minimum of
3/8” diameter steel and mounted in front of the driver.
TIRES:
1. 60 series race tires will be allowed: Hoosier G-60, American Racer KK704, Southwest
Speed Dirt 60, or 8” asphalt pull-off tire.
G-60, and Southwest Speed Dirt 60. (Min. Diameter 25.5 in.- Max Diameter 26 in.)
Any brand DOT 14” or 15” radial tire is allowed. Max size 60 Series DOT tires. Max tread width 9”. No
off road tread pattern allowed). Grooved and siped tires are allowed. No softening of tires . No bleed
off valves.
WHEELS: Any Max 8” width steel wheel (Min. weight 19 lbs). Any offset from 2” through 4” is
allowed. After-market 5/8” lug studs are recommended. 1” diameter lug nuts are required. Wheel
spacers are not allowed. Wheel adapters are not allowed. No screws allowed. NO Bead locks.
INTERIOR: Any oil or transmission fluid coolers in the driver’s compartment must be configured to
shield the driver in case of leaks. The cooler lines must be encased in tubing, rubber or steel may be
used. Fuel lines running through cockpit must be encased in tubing, rubber or steel from front firewall
to rear firewall.
FENDERS: Fenders 20 ga steel minimum may be cut for tire clearance only and fender must be within
7” of the tire. Front inside fender wells must be removed. Rear Fender wells may be removed.
FIREWALL: Front Metal Firewall must Close openings between engine and driver compartments, with
all holes into driver compartment covered with 20 ga steel minimum subject to track approval Rear
Firewalls may be stock or made of 20 gauge steel. Rear firewall must be complete, from fender to
fender, top to bottom, deck to floor pan,and all holes closed with 20 ga. steel. The front firewall may be
moved back, not more than 6 inches from stock location. Note: If driver's compartment is enclosed, and
decking is in place, the rear firewall may be removed and replaced no more than 25" inches forward of
rear axle centerline on all makes and models, with a minimum 20 gauge steel behind the driver
/passenger area to ensure the safety of driver.
FLOOR: Floorboards must remain in car. All rusted portions of the floorboard must be replaced with
minimum 20 gauge steel. The floor pan must remain stock from front firewall to no more than 25"
inches forward of rear axle centerline on all makes and models, and must fully extend from left rocker
panel to right rocker panel.
BUMPERS: Stock OEM bumpers are required with straps to prevent hooking. Option: After-market
plastic bumpers may replace stock OEM bumper. A maximum of 2 in. x 3 in. rectangular tubing or 1 ¾
in. round tubing should be used to support plastic bumper. Bumper loops are required to protect
radiator, fuel tank and to be used by wrecker for tow hooks. Maximum 1.5” x .095” steel tubing,
maximum 8” tall and not wider than the frame and mounted to the frame or bumper only. No sharp
corners or ends.
HOOD: Steel Hood/Trunk 20 ga steel minimum Required, No Aluminum. Hood may be hulled and must
remain in place at all times. Hood must be pinned. No holes allowed in the hood: therefore no working
hood scoops. Any holes in hood must be covered by steel. Quick release hood pins and rear deck pins
are required. Hood must make a complete seal dashboard and/or firewall. The engine compartment
must not be visible from driver’s seat. If hood fabricated must have edges turned down and must look
stock for year, make, and model..
SPOILER: No Spoilers. No Raised Body Lips, Side-Spoilers, or wings on any part of the car. No
Window Spoilers.
ENGINE: Engine must pull 15 inches of vacuum @1000 rpm.
Engine must be stock for type frame used. GM in GM, Chrysler in Chrysler, Ford in Ford, etc. All major
engine components must remain stock for type and year of car. Engine – 360 cubic inch maximum.
Pistons must be flat top or dished. No 0 decking of block allowed. Stock OEM intake manifold only.
Must have a vacuum port on manifold for tech. No high performance or marine intake manifolds. No
porting, polishing, or altering in anyway. Cast iron OEM blocks only, NO 400 blocks. After-market steel
stock type engine mounts are allowed. No machining in lifter valley. FORDS: 289,302, or 351 blocks
only with Flat Top pistons.
Engine components must be stock. OEM or stock replacement steel or cast crankshaft. All crankshaft
must have casting number, casting letters, or part number for identification. No splayed main caps.
Crankshaft cannot be lightened (no aerowing, bullnose, knife edge, undercut or drilling of second or
third rod throws allowed).
Motor Location GM Metric chassis: #1 spark plug must be even or forward of top ball joint, all
other cars stock location, motor mounts will be bolted or welded to frame cross-member, Tech.
Team will check cars for proper location.
Hydraulic Camshaft and lifters must Stock for type and year model.
A stock oil pan or a claimer style oil pan is allowed. Oiling must be complete wet sump. No dry sump
systems allowed. Must have an oil pan 1” inspection plug between the 2nd and 3rd bolt holes from the
front of the motor on the driver’s side to avoid oil pan removal for tech. No obstruction inside of pan.
CARBURETOR:
Carburetor must be stock 2 barrel of the same type and year engine was originally equipped, or a
Holley #4412 500 cfm two barrel is only. No pressure systems allowed with Carburetor. Adapter
allowed with Holley #4412 1 ½” max height including gasket. (See General Rules for 4412
Carburetor)
Fuel Injection Engines: Must be stock OEM with a stock ECM for make and model. The vehicle and
engine combination will be verified by VIN plate (Must have VIN plate in factory place and can not be
removed, relocated, or altered in any way). If car did not come with a fuel injection then you can’t use it.
No other type injectors can be used. No Racing chips or ECMS.
CYLINDER HEADS:
Heads must be stock steel OEM specifications, No porting or polishing. NO port work done in the bowl.
No gasket matching. No angle milling. No aluminum heads. Open chamber heads only. No Vortec
heads. GM engines must run 350 heads on 350 engines, and 305 heads on 305 engines. No less than
72cc. 305 heads on 305 blocks allowed. No special order heads or factory special order heads. All
GM-Ford-Mopar heads are limited to 1.94” intake valves and 1.50” exhaust valves. Max spring diam.
1.25”. Valve stems must be stock size diam. Heads may be flat milled for surfacing reasons only, no
angle milling allowed.
Studs may be pinned or screwed in without machining boss. NEW (Effective 6/3/17): Machining of the
heads allowed for screw in shouldered studs. NO Push rod guide plates are allowed. No porting,
polishing, port matching or coatings of any type allowed. No aluminum or titanium components are
allowed. Ford Heads: Any OEM Ford steel head is allowed. No aftermarket or Boss heads allowed.
Any stock ford single valve spring with dampener for make and model of car is legal, no double or triple
springs allowed. No beehive or inverted cone springs.
Rockers: Stock OEM Stock style rockers arms only. Full roller rocker arms and roller tip rocker arms
are not allowed. No 1.6 rockers. Poly-locks are allowed. Stud girdles are not allowed.
Intake: must be stock cast iron except, for Throttle body intakes or Ford may run a stock alum. intake
with EGR valve located on intake. Numbers 351W# RF-E1AE-9425-FA 302W# RF-E0DE-9425-AB
with carburetor. No after-market intakes, No high-rise intakes, No marine intakes, No Brzezinski
intakes, and no aluminum intakes. No porting, polishing, port matching, acid porting, acid treatments or
coatings of any kind. .
Any brand, style or max-size 14” air cleaner is allowed, but no type of ram air or forced air induction will
be allowed. Any valve cover combination is allowed. Air cleaner and filter for throttle body must be
stock for make and model of car. Dry elements only.
Cast iron water pump is required. Pulleys may be aluminum after-market. Fan must be steel or plastic
and attached to water pump. Fan spacers may be used. Steel Fan shroud allowed.
After- market OEM type harmonic balancer is allowed. NO fluid balancer.
IGNITION: Stock Ignition must remain and be completely stock OEM for make and model . OEM
replacement parts only. Stock HEI ignition is allowed. No MSD modules, no MSD systems or any aftermarket or GM ignition boxes allowed. OEM coil only. Aftermarket starter is O.K.
RADIATOR: Only one radiator must be in stock location. No cutting of hood for clearance.
Aluminum radiator is allowed. Racing radiator cap is allowed.
FUEL: Pump Gasoline or Racing gas allowed. NO E-85 Fuel, No additives allowed. No alcohol.
FUEL PUMP: Must be stock OEM style fuel pump, Carter and Holley manual styles are allowed when
using a carburetor (No Electric pump with Carb.). Frame may be notched for fuel pump clearance. If
using a Fuel Injection electric fuel pump, electric pump must shutoff when engine cuts off, by ECM
control or oil pressure sensor. No manual switch control on electric fuel pump.
FUEL CELL: Must be securely mounted to frame in trunk area of car between the rear frame rails min.
10” back of rear shock mounts with 2 – 2” steel straps. Fuel Cell in a Steel Can is required cell may be
dropped down between frame rails, top of fuel cell cannot be lower than top of frame. Fuel cell is
required. Trunk area must be sealed off from cockpit.
DRIVETRAIN - TRANSMISSION:
TRANSMISSION (New 6/3/17): Only OEM production transmissions allowed. No aftermarket
transmissions allowed. No ‘in and out’ boxes or
quick change devices allowed. With engine running and car in a still position, must be able to engage car
in gear and move forward, then backward.
Functioning shift levers must be in OEM location. Transmission fluid coolers allowed. Flywheel, flexplate
and converter must be steel.
Automatic: Any OEM automatic transmission allowed. Must use functioning, minimum 10 inch diameter
steel torque converter. No direct drives,
couplers, valved pumps, or bleeder style valve bodies. Must have at least one forward gear and reverse
gear, gears must function. Must have an approved
scattershield constructed of .125 inch by three-inch steel, 270 degrees around top of flexplate. Aluminum
OEM bellhousing may be replaced with
aftermarket explosion-proof steel or aluminum bellhousing. GM automatic must be used with GM engine,
may be used with Ford or Chrysler engine.
Stall converters allowed. Steel OEM style flexplate only, must be bolted directly to end of crankshaft. No
bump starts allowed.
Manual: Three, four or five speed OEM manual transmissions only. All gears must function. Must have
functioning 10.5 inch minimum diameter clutch
and OEM appearing pressure plate bolted directly to steel flywheel. These components must rotate,
consistent with engine rpm, while car is in any gear.
Must use explosion-proof steel bellhousing 180 degrees around top of clutch and flywheel. No miniclutches or couplers. Minimum 9-inch diameter Ford
clutch allowed. Hydraulic slave cylinder/throw out bearing allowed.
DRIVESHAFT: Driveshaft must be steel 2.5” min.dia. and must be painted white or silver. Driveshaft
must have a steel driveshaft loop (360 degrees) connected to the frame located within 6” of the front
driveshaft u-joint. Minimum size of driveshaft loop is 2” x 1/4” strap or minimum 1” round tubing. No
chain loops are allowed as driveshaft loops.
REAR-END: Rear-end must be OEM stock for year, make and model. Any gear ratio allowed as long
as no altering of housing is required to allow for installation. (Note: 8.5 GM Rear-end may replace 7.5
GM Rear-end for durability purpose. Must pass tech. inspection)
Axles must be locked together at all times with mini-spool or welded only. No posi-trac, limited slip,
Detroit locker or full spool allowed.
BRAKES: No aluminum brake calipers or aluminum braking components allowed. Cars must have a
minimum of four (4) functioning brakes. Rear disc brakes will be allowed for safety reasons. Must be
OEM type steel Rotors, OEM steel single piston Calipers and after market steel mounts allowed.
Adjustable proportioning valves are not allowed.
STEERING: Quick steer boxes of any type or style allowed. Complete OEM stock steering system for
year, make and model, from the steering box to the spindles, including steering gear box must be used.
Cast iron steering box only in stock location. After-market steering shaft and quick release steering
wheel is allowed. Steering wheel spacer allowed to a maximum of 3”thick. Any belt driven power
steering pump allowed, must be mounted in stock location on front of engine.
IGNITION SWITCH: All cars must have ignition switch clearly labeled. The car must be equipped with a
kill switch to be located within reach when standing outside of the car and easily accessible to
emergency personnel.
BATTERY : Only one twelve volt (12v) battery allowed. Battery and battery box must be securely
mounted to car and safely sealed. Battery must be completely encased in an enclosed battery box.
DRIVER LOCATION: Driver seat location must be located in the confines of the roll cage on the left
side of the vehicle only. No back seat mounting of driver’s or passenger seat.
REVIEW SEAT, DRIVER'S SAFETY, WINDOW NET, in General track Rules.
EXHAUST SYSTEM:
Stock exhaust manifolds for make and model allowed. Exhaust pipe 2.5 in. max. with muffler must
extend 6 inches behind driver’s seat. No exhaust flow devices allowed such as cross piece of Hpipes. May use stock type crossover pipe for single exhaust. Must run a track approved mufflers or
(muffler) (See General Rules).
Option Exhaust Headers: Add 100 lbs. to car must weigh 3400 lbs total and may run street style long
tube Headers with Max. 1 5/8 inch Primarys and Max. 3 inch collector or center dump header.
Ram Horn exhaust manifold (Center dump) or center dump header must add 100 lbs. No other type
header allowed. Exhaust pipe 2.5 in. max. with muffler must extend 6 inches behind driver’s
seat. No exhaust flow devices allowed such as cross piece of H- pipes. Must run a track
approved muffler
Notes: Pure Stock cars may have a passenger Seat, will have 3 right side door bars above frame,
passenger seat will be alum. racing type seat with seat belts and harness & a right side window net.
Passenger will have same safety equipment required as driver. (Must pass Tech.)
If the rules don’t say you can, then Ask, the rules are intended to provide an even playing field. The rules
may be amended to address any unfair loopholes or to reduce cost to racers.The management of the
Cotton Bowl Speedway reserves the right to alter the race Rules at any time for the improvement of the
quality and/or cost of the Racing.
