Calgary Hearts Developed by Lorraine Stangness of Country Creations in Strathmore, Alberta. Finished Quilt Size: 52" x 70" Finished Block Size: 4" x 4" Fabrics: 1 1/2 yards of assorted light fabrics 1 1/2 yards of assorted dark fabrics 1/2 yards of fabric #1 for inner border* 1 yard of fabric #2 for outer border ½ yard of fabric #3 for binding Cutting: From the light and dark fabrics: Cut 9 strips (9 light, 9 dark), each 5" wide. Recut each strip into 5” squares, for a total of 68 dark squares and 72 light squares. From fabric #1: Cut 6 strips 2 ½ ” wide (for inner border).* From fabric #2: Cut 6 strips 5 ½” wide (for outer border). From fabric #3: Cut 7 strips 2 ½” wide (for binding). * If you do not have two coordinating fabrics for an inner and outer border, use 1 ¼ yards of one fabric to cut six strips 7 inches wide, to make only one border. Directions: Block: 1. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of 52 light squares. Randomly pair each light square with a dark square, right sides together. Sew ¼” on each side of the diagonal line; cut on the diagonal line. Open the half-square triangles and press the seam towards the dark fabric. Repeat to make 104 light/dark half-square triangles. Trim to 4 ½” square. 2. Recut the remaining 16 dark and 20 light squares to 4 ½” square. Quilt: 1. Using the diagram as a guide, arrange the blocks into 14 rows of 10 blocks each. Sew the blocks in each row together. Press the seams of each row in alternate directions, to reduce the bulk. Sew the rows together. Press. Borders: 1. Sew the 6 strips of fabric #1 together along the short edges. Measure the length of the quilt through the middle, and cut 2 pieces of inner border that length. Sew to each side of the quilt centre. Measure the width of the quilt through the middle, and cut 2 pieces of inner border that length. Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt centre. Press. 2. Repeat step 1 for outer border, using fabric #2. Binding: 1. Use the 7 strips of fabric #3 to make binding. Attach to quilt edge. Note: For best results, press each seam before you sew another seam across it. To reduce bulk, press seams of adjoining blocks in alternating directions. Feb 2010
