SMALL CHANGE FOR BIG CHANGE!

SMALL CHANGE FOR
BIG CHANGE!
Student Council is sponsoring a Coin Drive from Monday, October 24 th
through Thursday, October 27th. Proceeds will be donated to Doctors Without
Border/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) saves lives by providing medical aid
where it is needed most—in armed conflicts, epidemics, natural disasters, and
other crisis situations in more than 60 countries around the world.
The penny drive is a competition between the classes. The winning class will
celebrate with a hot chocolate party.
BRING COINS AND BILLS!
Each penny donated counts as 1 point. Silver coins and dollar
bills count against the total points. There will be a jug in the
office for donations that will not affect the class totals.
RULES
1. Each class has a container in their homeroom. Staff will have a jug in the office for other
donations that will not affect the class competition.
2. Each penny dropped in the container counts as a point for that class. Ten pennies = ten points.
3. To make the competition a bit more exciting (and to bring in little more cash), classes are
allowed to sabotage each other’s jugs—all in good fun, of course. Each silver coin or dollar bill
counts AGAINST the class in whose container it is dropped. Two quarters in a container
subtracts fifty points. A one-dollar bill subtracts 100 points!
4. Students may put donations in before 8:00 or during recess, but not during lunch or after
school.
5. Students may not hide, move, or alter the containers in any room.
Here's an example: a seventh grader collects pennies and drops 36 of them in her class's container.
An eighth grader comes along and drops a quarter in the same container. The seventh grade class
gets eleven points (36-25=11).
If a parent would like to make a larger donation not in pennies, and does not want it to count
against any classroom, there will also be a jug in the office.
When we count the containers, we count all the pennies first for positive points, and all the silver
and dollars next and subtract. We will keep a close eye on the students to make sure there is no
foul play.
A hot chocolate party will awarded to the class who has the highest per-capita points when all the
money is counted!
