Thank you for organizing our responses to Robert and Margaret.
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of all the analysts in the Chicago Society, as well as the
non-analyst members of our Institute, I thank you for your expressions of
concern and care following the deaths of analysts Robert Moore and
Margaret Shanahan. I sought to responds personally to all who wrote or
called, but am certain that in the rush of events I missed some of you. Our
gratitude, however, is to all.
As I reported earlier, Robert shot his wife and then shot himself.
Here is a link to the Chicago Sun Times report -http://homicides.suntimes.com/2016/06/21/prominent-psychotherapist-drmargaret-shanahan-fatally-shot-in-what-police-believe-was-murder-suicidein-her-hyde-park-home/ The Sun Times has been particularly vigilant in
covering the toll of gun violence in Chicago.
I wish we could offer you a clear explanation of what happened.
We who perhaps should have best understood their predicament and
suffering did not have that opportunity. Margaret and Robert found it
difficult to be in community with their fellow analysts and had positioned
themselves at the margin of our Society for at least a decade. Many efforts
were made to reach out to them and sometimes they reached back…but
never for long. Our relationships with them were cordial but distant.
Hence, to seek to understand what happened has required that we
rely primarily on information gathered after the fact from persons who were
closer to them than we were. One thing we have learned is that the couple
specifically sought to keep knowledge of Robert’s medical status from their
analytic colleagues. We also have learned that Margaret, an intensely
private person, was seeking to manage Robert’s failing physical and
emotional health primarily on her own. We had known that Robert was
suffering from significant cardiovascular issues, and now know he also had
developed a form of dementia, perhaps related to the cardiovascular
problems. And we know that in recent months, even years, he had
experienced episodes of paranoia, significant grandiosity (at times
delusional), and fearful wrestling with his own death. These were not
consistently present but were episodic and could be intense. Finally, we
have learned that there also had been a significant financial setback and a
decision to move from their longtime home.
Somehow, all of these factors, and likely others, converged in a
deadly way, and we are left to ponder the sorrowful mystery that a man who
made such a significant impact on the lives of many, dedicating himself to
“facing the dragon of personal and spiritual grandiosity,” was in his life’s
final scene overpowered by a dragon. And with the immensely painful
reality that the woman who loved him – a woman of great refinement and
cultivation, who also impacted many lives through her own practice -perished in the fiery energy that consumed him.
Holding their real achievements and goodness in tension with the
darkness of their end is a vexing task for all whose lives intersected with
theirs. Your compassion for Margaret and Robert, and for the Chicago
Institute, helps, and we are grateful to be in communion with you. Going
forward, we ask you to continue to hold in your hearts those who analyzed,
supervised, or studied with Margaret and Bob. In so many cases, their agony
and confusion is deep.
In 2003, I graduated from Chicago and joined the Admission
Committee. Robert was a member. It was deeply satisfying to work
with him. He was very earthy, warm, and accepting of all whom we
interviewed. I learned a lot from him. He was a pleasure.
Margaret actually was part of my training group for a while. She
was brilliant, outspoken, and funny.
Robert and Margaret were such a strong couple. I had been invited
to their home as Margaret and I had a project to work on. She loved
to garden and it was a glorious garden.
Shocked and saddened by their passing, and working with patients
who live through traumatic bereavement, I know that the process
that works for me is to use a Buddhist ritual. One said daily to help
send energy to their bardo experience. And to live with the sadness
of their passing.
There is no analysis available to really deal with these kinds of
mysteries. But there is community, kindness, and being there for
one another. They brought many learnings to us, didn't they?

Journal of Analytical Psychology XIVth
International Conference
Journal of Analytical Psychology
XIVth International Conference
Dissociation: Trauma and the Self
‘Dissociation: Trauma and the Self’
The Roosevelt Hotel, New York.
20th – 23rd April 2017
Our next international conference will be held in
New York City – a first there for the Journal, despite
our several visits to the US East Coast, not least our
well attended gathering at Boston in 2013. So we are
very excited about this prospect: not only is New York
one of the great cities of the world with a unique
ambience and a wealth of culture in its own right, but
its tradition of welcoming innovative approaches in arts
and culture extends through to the psychotherapeutic
community as well. So what better setting could we
choose to explore our conference theme –
'Dissociation: Trauma and the Self’. Our plenary
speakers – who will include Don Kalsched, Donnel
Stern and Coline Covington, among others – will be
offering a diversity of approaches that contextualize,
explore and critique what our Jungian orientation
contributes to this field. Jung’s early interest in
complexes and subsequent focus on archetypes,
particularly their inclination toward personification and
autonomy, led the way in studies of dissociation. More
recently, conceptualizations of an unrepressed
unconscious are making an important contribution to
this ongoing debate and have again brought Jungian
perspectives on the ‘not yet conscious’ to the fore.
Helping us look forward to another memorable Journal
conference is the reassurance of having secured a great
venue for the event. The Roosevelt Hotel is one of
those iconic deco palaces so characteristic of the city,
and situated in the heart of downtown Manhattan. We
will also be offering – following on the success of the
Musical Soirée at London 2015 – another Gala dinner
concert on the Saturday evening.
Inevitably New York is not inexpensive: but we have
secured rooms at favorable rates, whilst our paring of
administrative overheads has allowed us to retain our
usual conference registration fee. There will also be a
generous discount for early booking – so do join us!
Further details and booking facility are available on our
dedicated website: www.japjungianconferences.com
Thursday 20 April - Sunday 23 April 2017
The Roosevelt Hotel, New York City
We cordially invite you to join us in downtown
Manhattan for this, our XIVth international
residential conference, though our first to be held
in New York City. Dissociation is a theme with
both a rich Jungian history and a general
contemporary pertinence. Jung’s early interest in
complexes and subsequent focus on archetypes,
particularly their inclination toward personification
and autonomy, led the way in studies of
dissociation. More recently, conceptualizations of
an unrepressed unconscious are making an
important contribution to this ongoing debate and
have again brought Jungian perspectives on the
‘not yet conscious’ to the fore.

Messages from the Heart
Jung and the Concept of Time
AN EXPERIENTIAL WORKSHOP
With
SANDY GELLER
JUNGIAN ANALYST, ART THERAPIST
August 6 ~ 10-2pm
IN MY TREE HOUSE STUDIO
Nine Bows, Buddhist Contemplation
“Homage to all that is healing
in a person’s life,
in traditions,
and in the world.
Homage to all that is healing
in the lives of saints and sages,
in this practice,
and in my own mind,
and
homage to all that is healing
in the stream of ancestral teachers,
in the immediate community of support,
and in our positive motivations.
Many many bright blessings on you and yours.
May all beings benefit.”
Come in, cool off and immerse yourself in meaningful
experiences with the creative; pastels, paints, clay,
sandtray and story telling--all through a Jungian lens.
Focus will be on creating mindful dialogue with psyche
deepening your relationship to the symbolic attitude and
exploring the concept of active imagination. No previous
experience with art is necessary. These workshops are
for students of Jung at all levels including therapists of
all persuasions. Participants will have an experience of
the healing potential of combining the expressive arts
within a Jungian frame. It is the work of psyche on a
personal level that extends beyond to the archetypal and
the collective unconscious. Participants typically know
more about themselves upon leaving than they did when
they arrived.
