Dark-to-Light Gala - Center for Inquiry

CENTER FOR INQUIRY
Portland
January
2012
NOVEMBER
2013
CFI has established centers
throughout the world which
provide a means of delivering
educational programs and services
on a local level and provide a
venue for like-minded individuals
to meet and share experiences.
In aiming to foster a secular
society, we do not seek to abridge
the rights of believers. We
vigorously object to government
support of religion and the use
of religious dogma to justify
public policy; we do not oppose
the free exercise of religion. The
secular society we are building
is a community of reason and
compassion in which the dignity
and fundamental rights of all
individuals are respected.
Three goals represent the focus
of our activities: an end to
the influence that religion and
pseudoscience have on public
policy, an end to the privileged
position that religion and
pseudoscience continue to enjoy
in many societies, and an end to
the stigma attached to being a
nonbeliever.

Helping DARKTOLIGHT Shine Again
by Fred Strong
ver the past five years attempts
have been made to establish
an innovative secular event
in Portland called DARKTOLIGHT.
However the efforts have never quite
garnered the energetic, grassroots support that backers, including CFI-Portland, still hope for. The idea behind
DARKTOLIGHT is to provide an
annual, secular holiday at the time of
Winter Solstice which will allow individuals and families of a non-religious,
non-traditional bent their own special
event. Many freethinkers voice that
they develop a feeling of alienation
and even depression during December
because of the hyper-religiosity which
permeates society, so it would seem
only natural that we should establish
our own special time to celebrate our
beliefs, nurture our own culture, art
and traditions. The difficulty has been
in garnering enough steady support to
pull such a feat off.
O
To be sure there are those that have
gotten behind the individual DARKTOLIGHT events that have occurred.
In 2009 CFI-Portland teamed with
Humanists of Greater Portland to
bring about the first incarnation of
DARKTOLIGHT in a pot-luck style
celebration that took place at Friendly
House. In this first event we attempted
to have something for everyone. There
was a “tree of knowledge” for the
youngsters, and volunteer entertainers
that ranged from singer/songwriters to
storytellers to a Didgeridoo virtuoso.
It was well attended and everyone
seemed to have a good time but no big
push came from the body of members
to pitch in and help bring about an
encore event.
The following year a DARKTOLIGHT night of entertainment was
held at the Portland Community Music
Center in SE Portland. Performers included those well known in our secular community - The Barkett Brothers,
Lenora Warren, and Dave Edwards
- and also included a theater troupe,
other musicians, and the world premiere of “Songs for Winter Solstice,“
performed by internationally known
Duelin’ Sopranos. Equally important,
there were several volunteers that
stepped up to help backstage, to set up
and run the coffee/tea/dessert tables
and usher and set up the hall. Again,
the hall was full (there was, at times,
standing room only in the 140 seat
theater), the reception was enthusiastic and DARKTOLIGHT seemed to
have taken flight. But support waned
as the year progressed. The interest in
DARKTOLIGHT seemed to become
light to dark in no time.
2011 passed without a DARKTOLIGHT largely because the support
wasn’t there, and organizers were a
bit brought down and perplexed by
the seeming lack of interest. No efforts were made to organize another
program, and organizers were beginning to give up on the whole idea, but
then something interesting happened.
While there was no large scale outcry,
there were a considerable number of
people asking with a certain excited
hopefulness, “Is there going to be
a show this year?” So Fred Strong
(the primary chief, cook, and bottle
washer behind DARKTOLIGHT)
approached CFI-Portland, whose

Become a CFI Secular Celebrant
The Center for Inquiry has created a Secular Celebrant Program to train and certify
secular celebrants to perform weddings,
memorials, and other “milestones of life”
ceremonies.
Why a CFI Secular Celebrant Program?
Persons who are not affiliated with any
religion constitute 16% of the US population. Unfortunately, the choice of persons
to conduct ceremonies for marriages,
same sex commitments, memorials, and
other rites of passage is usually between
religious clergy and civil officials.
For a nonreligious person this can be a
traumatic experience. They may be required to go through religious counseling
and/or have religious references in their
ceremony. They may be prevented from
having their choice of music or readings
as part of the ceremony. The local minister
called on to conduct a funeral/memorial
may preach a “come to Jesus” sermon or
otherwise use religious references that are
not in keeping with the worldview of the
person being memorialized. Many of us
have seen this done. Additionally, civil officials are usually not
available to do marriage ceremonies at the
place and time of the couple’s choosing,
but only in a government setting such as
an office or the courthouse. Furthermore,
these officials are typically personally
unknown to the couple. Wedding ceremo-
Dani Tofte officiated the first wedding in Oregon
using CFI’s Secular Celebrant Program. This
wedding ceremony will go toward setting precedent in Oregon, in order for CFI to challenge
the discriminatory law that bars non-religious
officiants from solemnizing marriages.
Dani Tofte tells Patrick and Heather Sloan,
“You may now seal this ceremony with a kiss!”

Shelley Segal Dazzles Portland
W
orld famous atheist singer/songwriter Shelley Segal touched
down in Portland on September 8th, her
only 2013 Northwest appearance, to
headline CFI-Portland’s Secular Sunday
concert event. Shelley, along with Portland Humanist singer/songwriter Dave
Edwards, played to a capacity house at
Portland’s Tonic Lounge, providing an
acoustic evening of thought provoking
and inspirational music geared to the sentiments of the hearty freethink crowd.
Shelley, who hails from Melbourne Australia, played many songs from her first
album, “An Atheist Album,” including
favorites, “I Don’t Believe in Fairies,”
and her moving anthem, “Saved.” She
also gave the audience an auditory taste
of her new album, “Little March.” Local
artist Dave Edwards, a veteran acoustic
folk/protest performer who has performed at local secular events over the
past several years, roused the audience
with several of his originals ranging
from love songs to political satires, and
comedian Whitney Streed served up a
healthy dose of laughter as savvy MC.
Planning by CFI-Portland for Secular
Sunday began months ago when organizers were fortunate enough to find
an opening in Ms. Segal’s busy U.S.
tour (which included a headline appearance at FFrF’s national convention in
Wisconsin) that allowed us to fly her
to Portland for the one night concert.
CFI member Jesse Markus, who helped
with the planning, was able to secure
the Tonic Lounge for the Sunday night
event.
Shelley loved Portland and it’s secular
community and said she looks forwards
to coming back as often as possible!

"Dark-To-Light", cont’d from page 2
board had provided the lion’s share
of support in past years for not only
DARKTOLIGHT but other large scale
secular arts/entertainment projects, to
inquire if they would back another attempt, bigger and bolder, to reestablish
DARKTOLIGHT as something that
the local secular population would not
only support but adopt as a yearly happening. Something we could all could
rally around as a source of pride and
excitement.
In early 2012 Strong approached
the CFI-Portland board to share his
ideas. The board members were quite
enthusiastic and eventually agreed to
offer financial support which exceeded
prior amounts by almost four times.
There was great optimism that if a
quality product could be produced,
other groups, businesses, families
and individuals might be enticed to
finally get behind DARKTOLIGHT
in a way necessary to insure longevity. What resulted was the largest scale
secular event of that type in our area.
“BANG!” the world’s first freethought
musical, premiered for 3 shows in
December 2012, and attracted paying audiences that numbered over
200. BANG! was a departure from
past DARKTOLIGHT events in a few
ways: First, it was a repeated show for
which there was an admission charge
(all prior efforts were free but encouraged donations and consisted of only
one show); secondly, it reached farther
into the non-secular community for
participants as our amateur cast of 13
and band of four consisted primarily
of actors and musicians from outside
the freethought community; lastly, it
was an all-original show based on the
principles of science, Humanism, and
secular values, not just a variety show
of pre-existing music and material.
DARKTOLIGHT now had a “hit.”
Despite all this and enthusiastic audience comments, after the show was
over, like prior years, unfortunately so
was the general interest. In addition,
while a few people volunteered to act
as ushers, there were fewer people
who asked to be involved than in
2010.
Early in 2013 videographer Jay Small
(who videoed all three performances), webmaster and video producer
Roger Bates, and Strong embarked on
producing an acceptable DVD version of BANG! (despite the sound
and performance shortcomings) and,
after about three months of additional
work, had a finished product. In July
of 2013 Humanists of Greater Portland
showed support for ‘BANG!’ by offering to host the first public showing
of the DVD at Friendly House, where
an audience of about 85 people filled
the house. Most of the cast, who were
honored that evening, also attended.
As events have grown, so have the
responsibilities and complexities. To
keep an effort afloat such as DARKTOLIGHT it must be a shared responsibility. As Strong said, “I don’t
regret the time or energy I have spent
to get this vision off the ground and I
harbor great thanks for CFI-Portland,
Humanists of Greater Portland and
the individuals who have steadfastly
helped but the time has come that,
in order for this to truly take flight,
DARKTOLIGHT needs to be a community effort.”
“I urge a group to form that will get
behind DARKTOLIGHT the same
way a group has formed to support
Sunday Assembly. We will call it
Friends of DARKTOLIGHT. I am
here, head full of ideas, eagerly awaiting the grassroots supporters DARKTOLIGHT needs, please call, text, or
e-mail me and let’s finally make this
vision a reality. I believe we can do
this, please don’t make me a delusional ‘believer,‘ as a Humanist it goes
against my grain!”
DARKTOLIGHT could become one
event, or a series of events, it could
include more massive events like singalongs or rallies, as well as foster new
types of performance events that will
act as springboards for freethink artists, musicians, comedians, and other
performers to help develop our own
culture. It is, after all, what we as a
community make of it. But before any
of this can happen, DARKTOLIGHT
must be supported.
