GLAD TIDINGS

v Kahu Jeff
he Christmas holidays bring a season of thanks-giving,
wonder, and waiting for the Christ child to be born among us. During
the holidays we remember those in Lahaina and the world that are less
fortunate than we are, and we provide gifts for them under our Angel
Tree. In our preparation for Christmas, we are reminded that when
Jesus came to us that Love came down at Christmas, and that now,
Aloha is with all of humanity.
It has been a wonderful year at Waiola. We have finished the
renovation of our Hale Pule, which now has repaired walls and a
beautiful new roof with copper gutters and trim. At Easter, you
welcomed me as your new Kahu, and Bill and I are finding a
wonderful home here at Waiola.
As I have traveled and visited other churches in Hawai i, I am
realizing what an amazing treasure Waiola and this congregation are
to Lahaina and to Hawai i. Our commitment to the Hawaiian culture
provides a unique blend of cultures and traditions, while highlighting
the Hawaiian traditions, culture and language. I am very honored to
be a part of this unique and generous community of Christ. If you
have any ideas or thoughts about how we can reach out to our
community of Lahaina, Maui, or Hawai i, please let Kahu nela or I
know. Of course, you can always reach us through the church office.
May your Advent Season be blessed, and may you have a

God is still speaking here!
Amazingly, our wonderful church continues
to grow and evolve. Of the many happenings
this year, the arrival of Kahu Jeff Crews, in
April, has been one of the most exciting.
Kahu Pono Anela Rosa has a new partner to
share the wonders of Waiola Church with.
Embracing the complexities of our host
culture has been a task that Kahu Jeff has not
taken lightly as he settles into church life on
Maui.
Kahu Jeff looks back on his first seven months
at Waiola and treasures the many significant
events that have occurred since his arrival.
With the help of Na

Hawaiian
Evangelical Churches next February
will reintroduce Waiola to our fellow
Hawaiian churches, and show them a
thriving multicultural and multilingual
Christian family that honors Hawaiian
and Christian traditions with integrity
and boldness. We are called to serve
our community and those around us
who are considered the least of these,
and next year I envision a program
where we provide aloha and outreach
to Lahaina through a youth program,
tutoring program, feeding program, or

REPAIRS!

Beginning in August, our Hale Pule repairs
were underway and our new roof started to
emerge! With all of the donations flowing
unending generosity.
On May 4, 2014, Waiola Church was
blessed and honored to host the Tri-Isle
Association Spring Aha Mokupuni. As
always, the meeting was a great
experience for everyone who attended!
BIBLE STUDY
The Hale Pule weathered the tropical
storms and the approaching winter rains
while the repairs were ongoing. By midNovember all was finished and we are so
thankful at the outcome as well as all of the
help we received from our members and
friends. The outpouring of time, experience,
and donations for this project was
overwhelming.
Waiola has been bereft of a bible study
for years, but 2014 brought back the
engaging group that now meets weekly.
Everyone is welcome to join for a single
study or for a lifetime of discipleship. The
group is energetic and lively and has
been known to have lively discussions of
Sunday sermons!
HEALTH &
Spirituality
Our
olani Hall has been
host to an incredible ongoing seminar
organized by Waiola member, Kathy
Corcoran. Guest practicioners were
invited to discuss and demonstrate
healing, health, and spirituality to not
only our Waiola congregation but to the
entire Lahaina community.
Excitingly, two further seminars are
scheduled for the upcoming year! Please
contact the office at (808) 661-4349 if you
are interested in joining us for this
enthusiastic and informative series!

Waiola welcomed four new members
this September!
Beginning in 2014, we welcomed the
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
to use our meeting rooms as part of the
departmental rural outreach program that
offers important resources like housing
assistance, mental health professionals,
nurses, and social workers to our
veterans here in Lahaina.

Waiola
We have so much to look forward to in the
coming church year. The excitement is palpable
as we push forward into a great year of building
on the spiritual and cultural foundations that
have been the source of all of our past success.
In the beginning of 2015 we will be the host
church for the Association of Hawaiian
Evangelical Churches Spring
February 20-21. In conjunction we anticipate the
installation of Kahu Jeff Crews to occur after the
close of the
Also anticipated in the beginning of January,
after an extended absence of a Sunday School,
our lovely Waiola member, Susan Yap, has taken
up the task of reintroducing a weekly Sunday
School to attract young families back to Waiola.
New Waiola member, Linda Norrington, along
with Lahaina mother and community member,
Momi Tupou, have signed on as Sunday School
aides to make the revitalization of the program a
wonderfully spiritual asset to the church.
We expect great things to be happening at Waiola
Church and we welcome your prayers and
thoughts for us, as ours are for you. We look
forward to 2015 being filled with continued
blessings for all of us!
