Gramps at School
READERS (5): Narrator, Tony, Daniel, Mrs. O, Gramps
NARRATOR: Gramps was coming to Career Day in Mrs. O’s classroom, and Tony was worried.
Gramps just wouldn’t fit in at school. The kids in Mrs. O’s room raced to the window.
TONY: I don’t need to look. I know it’s Gramps in his old truck.
DANIEL: Check out that heap!
NARRATOR: Gramps had put his truck together himself from old parts he’d collected over
the years. It ran on used cooking oil. Gramps was proud of the truck, and Tony was
proud of Gramps for making it. Then Tony saw what Gramps had in the truck, and he
wanted to sink right into the floor.
TONY: Mrs. O, why don’t I go out, get my grandfather, and bring him into the classroom?
MRS. O: Actually, your grandfather called this morning and suggested we go out and meet
him in the parking lot. He has some things to show us. Why don’t you tell him we’re on
our way?
TONY: I wanted to tell Gramps that Career Day was canceled. Gramps had that composting
toilet in his truck!
NARRATOR: When Tony got out to the truck, he found Gramps setting up his tailpipe cooker
on the bumper.
GRAMPS: I ain’t going to cook anything in it today, but I thought the kids could see how I rig
it up. Maybe you could tell ’em about the biscuits we make in it.
TONY: Gramps, do you remember when you were in school and. . . .
GRAMPS: I don’t remember much about school. Never spent much time there. See, my pop
died when I was twelve. I was oldest of seven kids. Someone had to take care of the
family and I was pretty good with my hands. I always figured I’d go back, but. . . .
NARRATOR: All of Tony’s classmates were interested in what Gramps had to show them.
Gabe even climbed up onto the composting toilet and begged Mrs. O to take his
picture.
TONY: (softly) I’m ten. Almost eleven. I can’t imagine quitting school and going to work to
support a family of eight. Gramps learned to do everything on his own. (a little louder)
Mrs. O, I was wondering. Do you think Gramps could come into the classroom now and
then and help us with some of our projects?
MRS. O: Great minds think alike. I was wondering the same thing. Do you think he’d be willing
to?
TONY: I hope so. After all, he fits right in.

Excerpt from Trash Day
It was Saturday. Cedric put the trash out,
as he did every Saturday. He looked
across the street. What was that thing
poking out of a box in his neighbor’s trash
barrel?
Cedric pulled out a white head. He
untangled two white arms. He brushed a
candy wrapper off a blue eye. It was a
robot! It looked too fancy to be just a toy.
The robot beeped and moved its hand a
bit. Then it went still.
“You poor thing!” Cedric said. “Why
would anyone throw you away?”
The robot couldn’t answer.
Cedric wondered what the robot could
do.
