Hot Weather
Motorcycle Riding
Wear light colored clothing – including your helmet.
Layer your clothing so you can adjust as the temperature changes. Breathable
layers are better than nothing at all – even under your riding gear.
Drink plenty of fluids – Start drinking well ahead of your ride – the effects of
dehydration are cumulative.
Avoid caffeine. Liquids with act as a diuretic and push water out of your system.
If you must have a cup of caffeine, make sure you drink 8 ounces of water for
every cup of coffee or soda that you drink.
Drink 1/2 ounce of water for every 1 pound that you weigh (as a rule of thumb, in
a day).
Sip your water every 15 minutes or so, rather than drink more at longer intervals.
Install a cup-holder or use a hands-free Camelback.
Wear lightweight clothing that covers your skin. It minimizes the sun’s drying and
damaging effects.
Stop frequently to rest, stretch, move around, drink water and cool down.
Plan your day around the weather. Start riding earlier and avoid riding during
peak heat times.
Signs of dehydration: less frequent urination, fatigue, headache, dizziness and
cramps. If you are not drinking water, it is hot and you are not sweating, be
careful. This could be a sign that you are nearing heat stroke.

The HOG website has seen a lot of traction in the past few months, especially on the forums and with the
Hearts of Gold ride. We added a Twitter account @durhamhog, and even a YouTube channel. We will be
focusing on adding more content to those social sites in the coming months.
The really great new addition to the site has been the expansion of the photo galleries. Specifically our
Photographer, Craig Zealand, has been a huge part of this. He has scanned many albums from the 90's and
early 2000's, and continues to add current albums. Check out the galleries if you can.
In the future our Historian, Gus, and all Sunday ride storyteller, Howard, will be adding descriptions to many
of photographs.
Give them all a high-five (or in Gus' case, a punch of some kind) for their hard work on this.
Thanks.

NEW MEMBER'S CORNER
please meet Rijan Selim, a.k.a. Reg ...
Hi Guys, let me introduce myself, Rijan Selim known as “Reg”. Let’s get started, I fell in love with my first Harley in
the summer of 1967, while I was playing outside of our apartment in east end Montreal. It was a police
motorcycle, a white beauty. I went up to it, put my leg against the hot muffler and was branded for life.
Since then, I got my first motorcycle at age 14 (yes, no license) and over the years have had everything from
Yamaha to Honda, but always wanted a Harley. BTW I have been riding a total of 39 years to date. For those of
you good at math you may have figured out I am 53 years old!
About 30 years back I met my better half Tammy and like bunnies do we have a son Ryan (22, now in the Army)
and a daughter Ashley (20, going to university to be anything she wants and she will be good at it).
So, you can imagine every time my wife had a grocery list I would sneak in the kitchen and write down on the list
“Harley Davidson”, or for my birthday "what do you want?" … you guessed it a Harley Davidson.
The trick is persistence and trying to tire the other person out. I was so good at this that in 2009 my wife said "go
buy your Harley", at least I believe this is what she said. From the moment she said "go buy”… I was at the
dealership putting a down payment on my 2009 FLHTCU. The rest is history.
So enough about the bike, for now. I was born in Egypt left at the tender age of 2 and raised in Montreal (yes my
mother tongue is French…Parisian French) went to school ... blah blah blah ... worked for a few companies you
may know, such as Toys R Us, Winners , IKEA (who moved me and my family to Ontario in 1996), and presently
working as an Operation Area Manager at Nike Canada.
Back to the bike. So I have a few buddies I ride with and we went on many trips together and rode on weekends .
I needed a little more, so this year I joined the Club … BEST MOVE I HAVE EVER DONE, forget for a moment the
“Testicle ride” I went on or the Dance we went to. The people in the club are warm, fun and friendly. I have a blast
every time. My Wife really enjoyed the ladies she met and would like to see more of them.
I joined the Club with an ulterior motive, I must be honest. I am looking at my retirement in the future and want
to be able to fill my time with something my wife and I love to do. That’s in 14 years, so you can say I am in it for
the long haul!
I look forward to the future with my new brothers and sisters and lots of fun!
