Perspectives on the future
Ah, the future: a blank slate, a fresh canvas, the great unknown. What lies ahead of
us is often anyone’s guess. However, there are many ways to mould our future. We
can plan and hope and imagine. We can make change where we see it’s needed. In
this magazine, you’ll get to go on a journey into wild fictional futures and into futures
that will be decided by the actions of all people today. It’s time to sign up and log
in to what lies ahead for each and every one of us: technology, the environment
and even humanity. As Prince Ea reminds us, ‘Sometimes you’ve gotta leap’ – so, go
ahead, leap into your future.

Emoji is the new language of the future –
and there’s no going back
by Tallia Storm
First off, I should declare that I’m a major fan of social media and
especially emoticons. Emoticons are without a doubt the future of our
language. Yes, I ignore my mother’s pleas to pick up the phone and
speak to my sister. Instead, I send big sis a serious emoji, which I know
will have her rolling about with laughter faster than a full sentence!
For me, emoticons help me express my emotional disposition in an
instant. Even my younger brothers all know that calling someone “poo
face” expressed in emoji is far more satisfying and comical in emoji
than it would ever be in text form, right?
But the reality is that emoji isn’t just for family banter and sarcastic
dialogue. Nor is it simply to be regarded as an amusing supplement to
language. We teens are at the forefront of a generation that is living
in the now. The “now” we are presented with includes a phenomenal
new language of opportunity. A language that gives us the chance to
express our emotions – love, anger, whatever that emotion may be – in
a nanosecond. The world of creative expression is boundless and guess
what? It’s all in that wee gadget we call our mobile phone!

EMOJI IS THE NEW LANGUAGE OF THE FUTURE – AND THERE’S NO GOING BACK
Imagine our poor parents. How on earth did they cope with only
utilising an exclamation mark(!) in a sentence to express sentiment? Or
writing full sentences? Let’s consider how long that took!
There has clearly been a void in our contemporary culture and
it has been filled with emoticons. It’s now up to us how we respond
and nurture that new language. I will admit I haven’t got ‘round to
reading Moji Dick, which is the translation of Moby Dick into Japanese
emoji language, but I did absolutely know that my first music video
would be a homage to emoticons – with a message of course. Why?
Because emoticons have the potential to be way stronger than
words, with a simple graphic. I must say, hats off to the American
magazine Puck, which in 1881 created dashes to make little smiley
faces. My goodness, were they ahead of themselves, or what?

‘We Are All Indigenous to

by Xiuhtezcatl Roske-Martinez
Meet Xiuhtezcatl Roske-Martinez, a 16-year-old who has been
speaking up for the environment and the Earth’s future since he
was six years old. He is a Native-American who has been raised in
the Aztec tradition, and this has given him a strong connection to
the natural world and the wisdom of his heritage. Roske-Martinez
urges people worldwide to unite and work together for a better
future. World leaders such as Barack Obama listen to him, and so
should we.
An incredibly important aspect of life that many people have
neglected, and even forgotten, is our connection with the Earth. This
loss of respect and sense of oneness with the Earth and each other is
endangering our future. We are literally destroying our own life support
systems by our over-consumptive lifestyles that are supporting the
corporate industries and fueling our climate and environmental crises.
Throughout history, the indigenous people of the world have carried
a deep respect and connection for the Earth, but this connection has

disappeared over time because of our changing social structures and
severe oppression of the Native peoples. We used to see ourselves as
a part of this natural world, a mere piece of the puzzle on this great
planet, connected to the web of life. We did not conquer the Earth, but
lived in balance with it, and gave back to it with ceremonies, prayers
and by being guardians of our sacred lands.
Speaking as a descendant of the Aztec Mexican people of Mexico
and being raised in our ceremonial ways, I have had the incredible
opportunity to connect deeply with nature and to travel to different
parts of the world through my work meeting with indigenous leaders.
They share stories of how they are fighting to keep their cultures alive,
and pass their knowledge and wisdom to the next generation, so that
their culture and their heritage will not fade away as so many others
have.
In our world today, the elders’ messages often fall on deaf ears
because our social system has changed and youth are not encouraged
to develop a relationship with the Earth. Instead, the youth are
spending hours on electronic devices, consuming drugs and alcohol,
taking them further and further away from their cultures.
[…]
In my journey to Australia in December 2013, I connected with the
Aboriginal peoples, who have been natives of Australia for thousands
of years. I learned that their rich and unique culture, language, and
tradition came to an abrupt halt in 1788 when the British invaded
Australia. Since then, hundreds of thousands were massacred to make
room for the white settlers and agricultural land. Half of the Aborigine
population was killed because of diseases brought by the settlers. In
New South Wales, more than 8,000 Aboriginal children were taken
from their families and brought to institutions and foster families
where they were abused and often used as slaves. They were known as
the Stolen Generation, and lost a deep connection to themselves and
their heritage.
Many children that were “half castes” were taken from their homes
with the belief that their brown skin could be bred out of them through
relations with the white people that invaded them. That oppression still
lingers in the generations that are born today.

‘WE ARE ALL INDIGENOUS TO SOMEWHERE’
Until we realise that we are one people, we are all connected, and
we all depend on each other and the Earth for the survival of humanity,
we will continue down this path of separation and disconnect. We must
reconnect with our indigenous roots because no matter where we
are from, or who we are, we are ALL indigenous to somewhere. And
despite the injustice and oppression, the Native people are claiming
their rights and taking back their land and their honour. They are
defending their sacred homes, and fighting for justice and equality. The
movement is building and many indigenous people will no longer stand
idly by.
An awakening is on the rise!

They’re made out of meat
by Terry Bisson
Science fiction has been around for centuries and is still a
popular genre both in books and on the screen. These stories are
appealing to many, perhaps because they both fascinate and
terrify us. After all, they are stories of our imagined future.
“They’re made out of meat.”
“Meat?”
“Meat. They’re made out of meat.”
“Meat?”
“There’s no doubt about it. We picked several from different parts
of the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, probed them all the
way through. They’re completely meat.”
“That’s impossible. What about the radio signals? The messages to
the stars.”
“They use the radio waves to talk, but the signals don’t come from
them. The signals come from machines.”
“So who made the machines? That’s who we want to contact.”
“They made the machines. That’s what I’m trying to tell you. Meat
made the machines.”
“That’s ridiculous. How can meat make a machine? You’re asking
me to believe in sentient meat.”

“I’m not asking you, I’m telling you. These creatures are the only
sentient race in the sector and they’re made out of meat.”
“Maybe they’re like the Orfolei. You know, a carbon-based
intelligence that goes through a meat stage.”
“Nope. They’re born meat and they die meat. We studied them for
several of their life spans, which didn’t take too long. Do you have any
idea the life span of meat?”
“Spare me. Okay, maybe they’re only part meat. You know, like the
Weddilei. A meat head with an electron plasma brain inside.”
“Nope. We thought of that, since they do have meat heads like the
Weddilei. But I told you, we probed them. They’re meat all the way
through.”
“No brain?”
“Oh, there is a brain all right. It’s just that the brain is made out of
meat!”
“So … what does the thinking?”
“You’re not understanding, are you? The brain does the thinking.
The meat.”
“Thinking meat! You’re asking me to believe in thinking meat!”
“Yes, thinking meat! Conscious meat! Loving meat. Dreaming meat.
The meat is the whole deal! Are you getting the picture?”
“Omigod. You’re serious then. They’re made out of meat.”
“Finally, Yes. They are indeed made out meat. And they’ve been
trying to get in touch with us for almost a hundred of their years.”
“So what does the meat have in mind.”
“First it wants to talk to us. Then I imagine it wants to explore the
universe, contact other sentients, swap ideas and information. The usual.”
“We’re supposed to talk to meat?”
“That’s the idea. That’s the message they’re sending out by radio.
‘Hello. Anyone out there? Anyone home?’ That sort of thing.”
“They actually do talk, then. They use words, ideas, concepts?”
“Oh, yes. Except they do it with meat.”
“I thought you just told me they used radio.”
“They do, but what do you think is on the radio? Meat sounds. You
know how when you slap or flap meat it makes a noise? They talk by
flapping their meat at each other. They can even sing by squirting air
through their meat.”
“Omigod. Singing meat. This is altogether too much. So what do you
advise?”

“Officially or unofficially?”
“Both.”
“Officially, we are required to contact, welcome, and log in any and
all sentient races or multibeings in the quadrant, without prejudice,
fear, or favour. Unofficially, I advise that we erase the records and forget
the whole thing.”
“I was hoping you would say that.”
“It seems harsh, but there is a limit. Do we really want to make
contact with meat?”
“I agree one hundred percent. What’s there to say?” ‘Hello, meat.
How’s it going?’ But will this work? How many planets are we dealing
with here?”
“Just one. They can travel to other planets in special meat containers,
but they can’t live on them. And being meat, they only travel through C
space. Which limits them to the speed of light and makes the possibility
of their ever making contact pretty slim. Infinitesimal, in fact.”
“So we just pretend there’s no one home in the universe.”
“That’s it.”
“Cruel. But you said it yourself, who wants to meet meat? And the
ones who have been aboard our vessels, the ones you have probed?
You’re sure they won’t remember?”
“They’ll be considered crackpots if they do. We went into their heads
and smoothed out their meat so that we’re just a dream to them.”
“A dream to meat! How strangely appropriate, that we should be
meat’s dream.”
“And we can mark this sector unoccupied.”
“Good. Agreed, officially and unofficially. Case closed. Any others?
Anyone interesting on that side of the galaxy?”
“Yes, a rather shy but sweet hydrogen core cluster intelligence in a
class nine star in G445 zone. Was in contact two galactic rotation ago,
wants to be friendly again.”
“They always come around.”
“And why not? Imagine how unbearably, how unutterably cold the
universe would be if one were all alone.”

Farmers of the future:
why mentoring youth and girls is key to strengthening
India’s food security
by Rucha Chitnis
Getting enough food and water for everyone is going to be one of
the biggest challenges in the future of our planet. Farmers will be
essential in producing enough food for everyone, without ruining
the natural environment. In India, the population will continue
to grow in the next few decades, and by 2030, the country is
expected to be the biggest in the world. India is at the same time
experiencing problems with climate change, such as drought and
floods. Life is also difficult for farmers, who have trouble earning
a living, and feel the pressure of big corporations who want to use
their land for industry or industrial farming. Read on to learn more
about how teenagers are the future of farming in India.

FARMERS OF THE FUTURE
farmer and fishing communities are still grappling to recover from a
devastating cyclone that ravaged parts of West Bengal and Bangladesh
in 2009. “Male farmers are migrating to urban areas looking for
alternative livelihoods, and women are bearing a disproportionate
burden to manage care giving, farming, and household food security,”
says Nilangshu Gain, Coordinator of Swanirvar.
Swanirvar works to shift the negative ingrained perceptions about
agriculture among youth, who are attracted to jobs in other sectors.
The team has implemented several environmental-education programs
to educate rural youth to protect trees and local ecology. Swanirvar
also partners with local schools to improve their curricula and quality of
education. “In the Sundarbans children memorise stories of Europe in
schools, and there is no emphasis on local knowledge,” Nilangshu says.
[…]
In 2013, Swanirvar partnered with nearly 11 high schools to grow
organic vegetable gardens. Children were also trained to set up seed
banks in 12 high schools, and over 300 students collected 27 varieties
of traditional seeds. That same year, Swanirvar used a Greengrant to
adopt a girl’s school near the Sundarbans, where it trained more than
100 girls in nutrition and how to farm using organic methods. “Because
of climate change, many girls are dropping out of school and are
working as domestic workers to supplement family income,” Nilangshu
says.
[…]
Swanirvar believes these youth-empowerment trainings can provide
critical skills to both girls and boys to shore up their families’ food
security by planting vegetable gardens in their homesteads, schools,
and communities. “Our training programs have been successful,”
Nilangshu says. “If we change our educational system, our nation will
change. The hope lies is in the empowerment of youth and women.”

Everybody dies but not
everybody lives
by Prince Ea
It is not death most people are afraid of.
It is getting to the end of life, only to realise that you never truly
lived.
There was a study done, a hospital study on 100 elderly people
facing death, close to their last breath. They were asked to reflect
about their life’s biggest regret.
Nearly all of them said they regretted not the things they did but
the things they didn’t do.
The risks they never took, the dreams they didn’t pursue.
I ask you, would your last words be: If only I had …
Hey, you – wake up! Why do you exist? Life is not meant to simply
work, wait for the weekend and pay rent. No, no, I don’t know much.
But I know this; every person on this earth has a gift.
And I apologise to the black community but I can no longer pretend.

EVERYBODY DIES BUT NOT EVERYBODY LIVES
See people don’t choose dreams, dreams choose them. So the
question I’m getting to is: do you have the courage to grab the dream
that picked you? That befits you and grips you; or will you let it get
away and slip through?
You know I learned a fact about airplanes the other day. Now this
was – this was so surprising. See, I was talking to a pilot and he told me
that many of his passengers think planes are dangerous to fly in. But
he said actually, it is a lot more dangerous for a plane to stay on the
ground. I say what? Like how does that sound? Well, he said, he said
because on the ground the plane starts to rust, malfunction and wear,
much faster than it ever would if it was in the air.
As I walked away I thought, yeah, makes total sense because planes
were built to live in the skies. And every person was built to live out the
dream they have inside. So it is perhaps the saddest loss to live a life on
the ground without ever taking off.
See most of us are afraid of the thief, that comes in the night to
steal all of our things. But there is a thief in your mind who is after your
dreams. His name is doubt.
If you see him call the cops and keep him away from the kids,
because he is wanted for murder, for he has killed more dreams than
failure ever did. He wears many disguises and like a virus will leave you
blinded, divided and turn you into a “kinda”.
See “kinda” is lethal. You know what “kinda” is? There is a lot of
“kinda” people. You “kinda” want a career change, you “kinda” want
to get straight As, you “kinda” want to get in shape. Simple math,
no numbers to crunch, if you “kinda” want something, then you will
“kinda” get the results you want.
What is your dream? What ignites that spark? You can’t “kinda”
want that, you got to want it with every part of your whole heart. Will
you struggle? Yeah, yeah … You will struggle, no way around it. You will
fall many times, but who’s counting?
Just remember, there’s no such thing as a smooth mountain. If you
want to make it to the top then, there are sharp ridges that must be
stepped over. There will be times you get stressed and things you get
depressed over.
But let me tell you something. Steven Spielberg was rejected from
film school three times, three times, but he kept going. The television
execs fired Oprah, said she was unfit for TV but she kept going. Critics

Struggle and criticisms are prerequisites for greatness. That is the
law of this universe and no one escapes it. Because pain is life, but you
can choose what type? Either the pain on the road to success or the
pain of being haunted with regret.
You want my advice? Don’t think twice. We have been given a gift
that we call life.
So don’t blow it. You are not defined by your past; instead, you
were born anew in each moment. So own it. Now.
Sometimes you’ve gotta leap. And grow your wings on the way
down. You better get the shot off before the clock runs out because
there ain’t no over time in life, no do-over. And I know what sound like
I’m preaching on speaking with force but if you don’t use your gift then
you sell not only yourself, but the whole world … short.
So what invention that you have buried in your mind? What idea?
What cure? What skill do you have inside to bring out to this universe?
“Uni” meaning one, “verse” meaning song, you have a part to play in
this song. So grab that microphone and be brave. Sing your heart out
on life’s stage.
You cannot go back and make a brand new beginning. But you can
start now and make a brand new ending.

point that young Mr. Flynn needs …
Chapter One
[…]
‘A bloody waste of space, that’s what you are. Sixteen years and what’s
to show for it? One bleeding GCSE.’
AJ stood in the small kitchen of their three-bedroom flat while his
mother peeled tough, pink strips of bacon into the frying pan and let
them fizzle in the fat. In such close proximity, AJ’s only protection was
to imagine her as the monster from the depths of despair, a red reptile
with a poison tongue. Here it went, lashing out again. If you let it strike
you, it could cause serious damage.
‘You’ve been nothing but trouble since the day you were born. Well,
don’t think that Frank is going to let you slouch round the flat doing
nothing.’
From the lounge came the voice of Frank.

‘Jan,’ he shouted, ‘bring us a beer.’
Frank and a marshmallow three-piece suite from Sofa World were
the flat’s latest acquisitions. The suite took up all the space the lounge
had to offer, while Frank had taken over the flat. He was a huge,
blancmange slug-of-a-man who left a slimy trail of beer cans, bacon
sarnies and spittled fag ends behind him.
‘Tell him,’ Frank added helpfully from the depths of the
marshmallow reclining armchair. ‘Tell him he can bugger off. What
about that beer, Jan?’
AJ felt a flicker of hope. This might be the moment he could
devaporise and disappear into the world outside. After that it was
down five flights of stairs to where freedom awaited him in the
comforting wheeze of London, the siren wail of calm. Sorted.
But instead of robotically doing what Frank demanded, his mum
handed AJ a letter. It was addressed to Ms J Flynn and from a law firm,
Baldwin Groat. AJ’s heart sank.
‘What’s this?’ he asked.
‘What does it look like?’
‘An official letter,’ said AJ. ‘But what’s it got to do with me?’
‘You can read, can’t you?’
AJ read. Mr Morton Black would like to see him tomorrow for a job
interview.
‘What kind of job?’ asked AJ.
‘I don’t care,’ said Mum. ‘If it’s cleaning the bogs, you’ll bloody well
take it.’
‘But how does he know about me?’
‘I bloody well told him, didn’t I.’
AJ knew that more questions would not lead to more answers. The
conversation would end with the reptile’s famous saying, ‘Because I
bloody well say so, that’s why.’
End of questions.
A woebegone wail came from Frank. ‘Jan – my beer – where is it?’
‘Can’t he get his own beer?’ said AJ. ‘He needs a bit more exercise
than just a workout on the remote control.’
It was an unwise thing to suggest at the best of times. The beer
destined for Frank hurtled towards AJ.
From the reptile-handling manual: in the event of attack, the best
course of action is to run for it.

THE DOOR THAT LED TO WHERE
AJ made his exit as fast as he could followed by the enraged red
reptile who, leaning over the metal-railed bannister, yelled down the
stairs after him.
‘You good for nothing little …’
Elsie, from three flats below, was already out on the landing looking
up.
‘Keep it down, Jan,’ she called.
‘Shut up, you nosy old cow, and mind your own business.’
The door to AJ’s flat slammed shut. The noise vibrated through the
whole building. If a full stop had a sound, AJ reckoned that was it.
‘On one of her mad ones, then?’ said Elsie. ‘Come in, love, I’ve
another book for you to take back to the library, if you wouldn’t mind.
And this time, bring me something with a bit of romance in it.’
Elsie Tapper had been AJ’s saviour since he was old enough to walk
down the stairs on his own. She had taken him in, even kept him for
weekends when Jan wanted to have a break. AJ, in return, called her
Auntie, as did his mates, Leon and Slim. […]
‘Is that right, then, about your exam results?’ asked Auntie Elsie,
taking him into her lounge.
Elsie’s lounge still had its 1930s tiled fireplace, which made it feel
cosy, just like AJ imagined home might be.
‘Yes, I only passed English. A+ though.’
‘I would’ve thought you’d have got a lot more. Such a clever lad.’
‘Perhaps not clever in the right way,’ said AJ.
‘What are you going to do now?’
‘I’ve got a job interview.’
He showed Elsie the letter. She turned on her lamp and put her
glasses on the end of her nose.
‘Nice writing paper,’ she said. She held up the letter to the light. ‘It
has a watermark – expensive – with an embossed name. Must be a
posh place, these chambers. What’re you going to wear, love?’
It was something that AJ hadn’t thought about.
‘What I have on,’ he said.
‘No, love, you can’t go like that for a job interview. Not to a place
with an embossed name and watermarked paper. You wouldn’t stand a
chance.’ She disappeared into her bedroom. ‘Come here, I need some
help.’

THE DOOR THAT LED TO WHERE
AJ stood on a chair and took an old, battered suitcase down from
the top of the wardrobe. Elsie opened it with pride.
‘A bit of a teddy boy in his youth, was my Jim. He loved his clothes.’
The jacket was checked with a velvet collar and velvet pocket flaps.
The waistcoat was bright red, the trousers too long. Elsie said the shirt,
which was a kind of silvery grey, had shrunk a bit.
‘Go on,’ said Elsie. ‘Try them on.’
AJ stood looking at himself in the mirror. Only the crêpe-soled shoes
and the shrunken shirt fitted, everything else was too big and made
him look like a clown.
‘I can’t go dressed like this,’ he said.
‘From where I’m standing it doesn’t look like you have much
option,’ said Elsie.
‘Can I borrow the shoes and the shirt?’
‘They’re yours, love, if they’ll help,’ said Elsie. ‘But what about a
jacket?’
***
The next day, dressed in jeans, the grey shirt and the brothel creepers,
minus a jacket, AJ set off for the job interview, his stomach doing the
dance of death. Through his teenage years AJ had found a way of giving
himself a boost of good luck when he needed it. He would search for
signs – words in adverts would do, even a white feather in the road
meant his guardian angel had him safe. Never, he thought, had he
needed a sign more than he did that morning as he stood at the gates
to Gray’s Inn, watching all the fancy-pants ants with umbrellas and suits
arrive for work. The address on the letter was 4 Raymond Buildings. It
was a Georgian terrace built of mellow London brick, definitely not the
kind of place that would have a job for him. His mum must be losing
her marbles. He wondered if it wouldn’t be best if he gave the whole
thing a miss, headed back to Stoke Newington and spent the day in the
library, lost in a book.
That was when he saw it, moving slowly down the road, stuck in
a jam like the rest of the cars. A brand-new red Porsche. It was the
number plate that gave AJ the courage he needed. It read 1 GCSE.
