The purpose of this worksheet is to help with active reading and organizing thoughts about course readings.
When completed with detailed notes, this worksheet is a helpful tool for setting up writing assignment outlines
as well as a useful study guide.

1. Purpose: Why did the author write this? What motivated him/her?
2. Question at issue: What is the central issue being discussed?
3. Point of View: What is the author’s perspective on this issue?
4. Thesis or Central Idea: What is the main point the author makes?
5. Concepts or Main Ideas: What key points does the author make to support the thesis?
6. Empirical Evidence: What facts, data, evidence does the author use to make points?
7. Assumptions: What hidden beliefs does the author have? What does the author take for
granted?
8. Implications & Consequences: What are the outcomes of taking the writer’s thesis
seriously?
