OBJECTIVES
Predicting Properties
In this lab, you will create a graph of atomic radius values and use the graph
to interpret trends in the periodic table. You will recognize that elements are
grouped in the periodic table according to similarities of their properties.
• Graph values for
atomic radii.
• Interpret trends in
the periodic table of
elements.
PROCEDURE
MATERIALS
QUICK LAB
On your graph paper, create a line graph using the values in the data
table below.
Label the x-axis “Atomic Number” and the y-axis “Atomic Radius.”
For each student
• graph paper
• periodic table
Review the range of values in the table to determine an appropriate
scale for your graph.

Quick Lab continued: Label the x-axis “Atomic Number” and the y-axis “Atomic
Radius..” Review the range of values in the table to determine an appropriate scale for
your graph.
Describe the pattern you see in the graph.

Compare your graph to the periodic table of elements. How does the pattern
relate to the structure in the periodic table?

_________________________________________________________________________
What trends do you observe about the the relationship between atomic radius
and atomic number in the periodic table?
_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________

Based on these trends, what are the approximate values of the atomic radii of
elements 10, 18, and 20?
