BROKEN HILL
(approx. population 18,860)
Originated in 1883, shortly after
Charles Rasp pegged out his first
mining blocks on the lead-silver zinc
lode. The town was proclaimed
a city in 1907 and today is a
community which depends mainly
on the mining industry, pastoralism
and tourism. Broken Hill is the centre
of the West Darling Pastoral industry
which constitutes a total area of
approximately 16 million hectares.
Although the city is connected by
rail to both Sydney and Adelaide,
practically all of its commercial
interests are with South Australia.
Broken Hill, and nearby Silverton,
are home to many of Australia’s
famous bush artists.
WENTWORTH
(approx. population 1,310)
Situated at the confluence of two
of Australia’s greatest rivers, the
Murray and Darling. Declared a
town in 1859, Wentworth became
the third largest port in N.S.W. within
20 years at a time when more than
90 paddle steamers were operating
on the two rivers
MILDURA (approx. pop 30,020)
Mildura, an Aboriginal word meaning
“Red Earth”, is the “capital” of the
vast Sunraysia irrigation area.
This region covers nearly 25,000
hectares and supports about 35,000
people, producing more than 80%
of Victoria’s dried fruits and over half
of the State’s citrus fruits. Mildura
today is a flourishing city with wide
tree lined streets and avenues plus
many attractive parks and gardens.

(approx. population 2,730)
Following World War 1, the township
became the centre of the largest
irrigated soldier’s settlement in the

was undertaken using Big Lizzie, an

Barclay Square opposite the railway
station.

The grandeur of the architecture is
evidence that Bendigo’s goldfields
had made this the richest city in

mining ceased nearly 50 years ago
it is estimated that about 25 million
ounces of gold had been unearthed.
Bendigo today is a gracious city
blending history with a modern,
