Second graders review creation and the plan of salvation through the use of the Wordless Book materials from Child Evangelism Fellowship. They begin the year with a strong emphasis on the plan of salvation and the need for a personal commitment to Jesus Christ. They then begin a study of Old Testament heroes of the faith beginning with Samuel and ending with Elijah. They end the year studying the Life of Paul the apostle. They are evaluated with a weekly written test over the content of the stories with some questions also relating to their personal growth and understanding of how the lessons that week applied to them. They are given a memory verse each week which relates to the lesson which they must be able to both recite orally and write it in written form. Second grade students will recall how to sign in and log off of a computer and use appropriate computer vocabulary. They will be able to identify and use the letter keys and special keys on a keyboard. Second graders will identify and apply basic knowledge of software applications and will be able to discern truth and the ethical use of the computer. Second grade students will be able to identify similar subject matter in works of art from various cultures and time periods and identify the artists of selected works of art. They will use appropriate art vocabulary. Second graders will create artwork about self, family, pets, and personal experiences as well as identify and apply elements and principles in their art. They will demonstrate evidence of care in completed work and respect their work and the work of others as an image bearer reflecting the Creator. Second grade students will sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music and will listen to, analyze and describe music. They will evaluate musical performances and be able to identify and define the three elements of music. Second graders will recognize and perform basic rhythm patterns and recognize and perform basic melody patterns. They will listen to, appreciate and recognize all the sections of the Carnival of the Animals. They learn these concepts through the following units: 1. Ingredients of Music 2. They are introduced to the cursive letters and by the end of the year are using them exclusively. They learn that the written word is a gift from God to be used to communicate His truth. The students are graded weekly on their penmanship through copying their verse for that week or some other written assignment. They learn these concepts through the following units: 1. Page 10 LANGUAGE ARTS: PHONICS— 2nd GRADE What do 2nd graders learn about phonics? Second graders continue to work on word attack skills by being drilled on the basic phonics sounds through use of a phonics chart. They are tested weekly on these sounds by use of the Victory Drill book. They also have a phonics workbook that teaches them blends, digraphs, rhyming words, plurals, prefixes, suffixes, contractions, synonyms, antonyms and homonyms. They learn that all words are God’s words and have been given to us to convey God’s truth to a needy world. They learn these concepts through the following units: 1. Consonants, hard and soft c and g 2. Short and long vowels 3. Compound words, blend and digraphs, y as a consonant and a vowel, -r controlled vowels. 4. Contractions, plurals, suffixes 5. Second graders practice reading skills through reading groups and reading worksheets. They are evaluated on their oral reading skills as well as on written assignments. Vocabulary words are introduced for each story as well as thought provoking questions that deal with the basic lessons being taught from that story. Many different reading strategies are discussed throughout the year to help develop comprehension skills. They are challenged to think about what biblical principle they might be able to apply from the story they are reading and how they can apply that to their lives today. Second graders use the Shurley Method to reinforce their language skills. They learn how to identify parts of speech in a sentence. They also learn the rules for capitalization and punctuation. From these skills they learn to write 2 point paragraphs. To enhance their writing skills they are introduced to the 6 + 1 Writing skills. They are given a weekly creative writing assignment to demonstrate their application of the concepts being taught. They learn these concepts through the following units: 1. Kinds of Sentences 2. They write dictated sentences to see if they can incorporate these words in written form. They do proofreading texts that have spelling and grammatical errors so they can demonstrate their understanding of how words go together to communicate truth. They are tested weekly with a written test which includes bonus words which often are exceptions from the rules of phonics to help challenge them. Second graders learn their math lessons using the cyclic format of Saxon Math. They review the basic addition and subtraction facts through the family of 18’s and must memorize these facts for mastery. This is tested through both a weekly oral flashcard test and weekly timed written facts tests. They learn to borrow and carry with 2 and 3 digit numbers. The students develop problem solving skills by weekly doing the Continental Math League problems and Math Logic cards called TOPS. Lessons are done daily and homework is assigned several times a week. Written assessments are given weekly to evaluate and assess mastery of new concepts being taught. Second grade students will be able to move using six basic locomotor and basic non-locomotor skills. They will discover the true meaning of balance and be able to show that definition through balancing skills. Students will practice components of fitness through appropriate exercise and activity. They learn the scientific method through demonstrating to the class a science experiment and explaining it to the class. They need to learn to behave properly so they can be a good example of Christ to the world. They also study different people groups such as Native Americans, Pioneers and Pilgrims. They need to realize God made each group unique and they can learn from them. God teaches us about His faithfulness through studying history. They study American symbols and famous people. They learn to appreciate and value their freedom. They study economics and learn the basic terms in a minieconomy. They set up an open market where they can buy and sell goods they have made.
