Appreciation Week
March was a nice easy month! I hope
you got to enjoy the sunny days!
We are officially paperless (mostly)!
What a perfect month to start our online Thursday Folders and Newsletter.
No more parents stuffing folder on
Thursday mornings and no more piles of
paper to recycle! Please help your
friends to remember to look for Folder
Items each week! You will be
reminded with an e-mail from "Alert
Now" from the school each week.
Previous folders are available on-line as
well as all the Newsletters!
As you know Fun Fair brought in
$14,000 for Wilson and we are working
with Mrs. Sulsberger to decide how best
to use these funds!
Admiral's Night was tons of fun and
enjoyed by all who attended...Thank
you to Wendy Zeller for chairing this
event!
Don't forget to vote for the open School
Board Positions! Elections are over
Spring Break...absentee ballots are
available at City Hall and it only takes
5 minutes to vote!

Wilson Principal’s Corner
Greetings to Parents, Students, Staff
and Families! I couldn’t believe it when
just a few days ago I was writing an
email to staff asking for feedback on
the schedule for next year! It seems as
if we’ve just started, and yet we are
already making preparations for the
2010-2011 school year.
As you have probably noticed, our
students are a little excited about the
changing weather. While we are all
happy the snow has disappeared, I do
ask that parents are conscientious of
the unpredictability of temperatures.
We would like to see students dressed
appropriately, particularly as it may not
hit the predicted daily “highs” in time
for recess. Please make sure your
son/daughter is either bringing or
wearing pants, and that they have coats
with them. We certainly appreciate
your assistance in this!
Upcoming events include an author visit
for kindergarten, first and second
graders, as well as a second semester
movie night coupled with a student art
gallery. Please remember that this is a
family event, and students may not be
dropped off. So bring a blanket, put on
some comfy clothes and spend a little
time at Wilson. It’s a great place to be!
Go Wildcats!
Jocelyn Sulsberger, Principal
President’s Note (continued from page 1)
Movie Night! Don't forget to stay for
Disney/Pixar's "WALL-E" after the
Gallery Night! We will be raffling off
Spirit Wear, Green Grocery Bags, and
Olympian Signed t-shirts that night.
Simply enter your name at the
POPCORN TABLE and winners will be
posted in the lobby for immediate
prize pick-up follow the end of the
movie! Please keep in mind that
there will be no food except popcorn
sold that night and only water will be
allowed in the gym...Parents, your
help in chaperoning your children will
allow us to offer this event again in
the future! THANK YOU!
Staff Appreciation Week is the
first week in MAY! May 3 - 7.
Keep an eye open for what is
happening each day that week so
your children can participate!
Also, if you have an item to
donate to the Staff Raffle please
drop it off in the office with your
name and contact information!
Our goal each year is to have an
item for every staff
member...over 70 staff members
keep our school functioning and
our children sharp! So keep the
donations coming:) We do have
several male staff members so if
you have something special for
our guys, bring it! THANKS
everyone! The staff look
forward to this week every year!
Have a lovely Spring Break!
Enjoy your family!
As always, thank you for
allowing me to be a part of your
child's educational memories!
Go WILDCATS!

Wilson Earth Day 2010 Celebration
Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s
environment and is celebrated each year on April 22nd. Wilson’s Earth Day Committee has
organized the following events and activities during the month of April for Wilson School
families to come together in celebration of Earth Day.
Gallery Night (Earth Day & Arts Day), Friday, April 23:
Mark your calendars and put your creative energies to use by making an awesome art
project out of recycled/reused materials for Wilson’s Arts Day Gallery Night.
Maximum size for all entries is 12” x 14” and projects are due at school by Earth Day, Thursday, April 22.
Each project will be on display at the Arts Day Gallery on April 23rd.
*Sculptor Seth Tyler (Mequon) will have some of his unique art work made of scrap metal on display in the lobby.
Eco Facts: As a nation we recycle approximately 32% of our waste.
Movie Night-Friday, April 23:
Wilson’s Spring Movie Night will be held in conjunction with the Gallery Night and will feature the movie WALL-E,
a movie about a wide-eyed robot named WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) who realizes that he
has stumbled onto a secret that could save planet Earth, and once again make the ravaged planet safe for all
humankind.
Weather permitting, come early and enjoy a walk through Wilson’s Garvey Woods before the movie!
Eco Fact: Regular experiences out in nature provide benefits like, relaxation, stress reduction, improved feelings
of spirituality and peace, physical exercise and an opportunity for some old-fashioned family fun!
Old Battery Collection Drive:
Start sending in both rechargeable and non-rechargeable old used batteries for the Wilson Student Councilsponsored Battery Collection. This project will run throughout the month of April to see which class collects the
most batteries, which will be recycled at Batteries Plus. A popcorn party will be awarded to the class who
collects the most batteries (by weight). Watch the poster in the lobby to see where your class ranks.
Eco Fact: Batteries contain mercury and cadmium, heavy metals that are toxic chemicals and should always be
disposed of at a hazardous waste facility. Switch to rechargeable batteries and eventually recycle them.
Wilson Clean-Up:
During Earth Week, April 19-23, each grade level will have a specific area of the school grounds, including Garvey
Woods and the school prairie, to clean up after the long winter. Dates and times will vary according to each
teacher's schedule. Ask your student (s) how their class has participated in the school clean-up.
Eco Fact: Involvement with community projects improves quality of life & neighborhood satisfaction, expands
social networks, and provides a sense of pride and ownership in ones surroundings.
MTSD Energy Cost Avoidance Program:
Did you know?........in September 2005, the MTSD implemented an Energy Cost Avoidance Program which has
resulted in a 47% decrease in electrical use and 21% decrease in natural gas use within the past 5 years. This
equates to a total energy decrease of 34% resulting in a savings at Wilson School alone of $122,386! The
money saved has been applied towards the increased cost of energy that has more than doubled during this
period of time. This was accomplished by implementation of computerized digital temperature controls in each
room that adjusts for time of day, time of year, and outside air temperatures. Hallway light fixtures were
updated with new, energy efficient models; and, most importantly, by changing human habits regarding energy
use. Support of our schools’ energy reduction program relies on the cooperation of everyone using our buildings.
Eco Facts: By turning down your central heating thermostat one degree, fuel consumption is cut by as much as
10%. Insulating your attic reduces the amount of energy loss in most houses by up to 20%.

Wilson Goes to the Admirals
March 7th was a great afternoon for the Wilson students and their families who attended the Milwaukee Admirals
take on the Peoria Rivermen. It ended, unfortunately with a loss for our Admirals, but was a big win for Wilson
School as 186 tickets were sold! Our kids did a great job representing their school in singing a heartfelt
rendition of our National Anthem. Many thanks to Mrs. Krumenauer and her student teacher, Ms. Albers, for
preparing them so well! Prior to game day, Roscoe (the Admirals mascot) came to visit the students during all
three lunch hours. He even filled in for Mrs. Sulsberger in her absence! Thanks again Wilson for another
successful fundraiser!

LUNCH ACCOUNT AVAILABLE ONLINE
Dear Parents/Guardians:
With current national attention being focused on children’s health and wellness issues, Mequon-Thiensville School
District’s Food Service Department is excited to provide parents a convenient, easy and secure online prepayment
service to deposit money into your child’s school meal account at any time. This service also provides parents the
ability to view or print your child’s account balance through a web site called MyNutrikids.com. By having money in
each child’s account prior to entering the cafeteria, we find the lunch lines move along much faster so your child has
more time to eat and be with friends. Access to setup accounts and begin depositing online becomes available on
Thursday, March 25, 2010.
To access these services:
1. Simply go to the district web site at www.mtsd.k12.wi.us
2. In the “Parents Quick Links” box at the right, Click on Food Services link
3. Click on the MyNutrikids.com link. From this site you will create your account and add money to your
child’s school meal account. All you need is your child’s name, student ID number (same number your
child has been using) and school ZIP code. The instructions listed on the next page will guide you
through the easy online account set up process.
Things to know:
If you have more than one child in the District you can handle all online prepayments from the same online
account.
Payments may be made through an existing PayPal account or with a major credit or debit card.
In order to use the online prepayment service, a small convenience fee for each transaction will be
assessed to cover the bank fees. The convenience fee is $1.75 per deposit transaction. Parents placing
money into multiple meal accounts will only be assessed the $1.75 fee once per deposit transaction.
Mequon-Thiensville School District will not profit from the use of this site.
We are very excited to offer these new services which are in direct alignment with the District’s Strategic Plan/Safe
and Healthy Environments priority, and are confident this new system will benefit you, your child and our District.
However, if you choose not to take advantage of the online prepayment service you may continue to make advance
payments via check, made payable to the school your child attends, along with having the student ID located on the
memo line of your check. In order for a deposit to be credited to the child’s account same day, deposits must be
dropped off in the school’s office, food service basket by the time school starts for the day. Cafeteria managers pick
up after school begins and will post and deposit to the child’s account same day. Please write your child’s full
name(s) and Student ID(s) on the memo line of the check. In an effort to reduce paper cost, envelopes will only be
used for when a cash deposit is necessary. If cash is being deposited, please write on the front of the envelope, the
child’s full name(s) and Student ID(s) in order to receive accurate credit to your account.
If you have any questions about these new services, please feel free to contact my office at 262.238.5648.
Best Regards,
Melissa Pementel

Attention all Fifth Grade Parents!
Are you wondering what goes on at the wonderful Middle School up the road from Wilson? If so, you are invited
to attend our May 6th PTO meeting to start to get to know the school and the people. The meeting will feature a
program on Risk Taking Behavior in Middle School Students and the substance abuse program at the middle school
level presented by Annmarie O’Brien, Starting Point of Ozaukee. The meeting starts at 9:15 am and is held in
the IMC.
The Steffen PTO works hard to be informative, inclusive and keep parents in touch with life at Steffen. Middle
School is a whole new world from elementary school and the Steffen PTO empowers parents with meetings filled
with special speakers addressing curriculum and middle school issues and education information. Our school
principal, Debbie Anderson, attends every meeting and shares news from the school.
We are also looking for someone to represent the incoming 6th grade on the PTO Board. Typically, a 6th grade
parent serves as either a VP or secretary. Both volunteer roles are easily done as a newcomer – secretary simply
takes minutes at the PTO and Board meetings and the VP is just a one year commitment.
We are also looking to fill some committee chair roles and you can read all the job descriptions and information
about services provided by the PTO on the website at http://mtsd.k12.wi.us/steffen/pto.php.
Please contact Stephanie Clark at [email protected] or Debbie Martin at [email protected] to learn
more about how you can be involved in your child’s upcoming experiences in middle school.
Welcome and we are looking forward to seeing you!!

The funding restrictions placed on school districts have created the need for the community – teachers, administrators, and
community have to find creative ways to work together to provide the best possible options for our children. I believe that
our district has come a long way toward that end in the last few years and I believe I bring a perspective to the process that is
unique given my experience with multiple school districts and manufacturing management background. I would like the
opportunity to continue serving you, and our children, to provide the best educational opportunities possible.

Like so many school systems in the country, the Mequon-Thiensville School District is
experiencing fiscal challenges due to declining enrollment and an increase in expenses as a result of the elimination of the
Qualified Economic Offer. Essential to scrutinize EVERY element of the education process while simultaneously developing
innovative ways to generate revenue. World around us changing daily, technology catalyst for 21st century education.
Concerns with class size could potentially be addressed with current and efficient technological infrastructure.
Fortunate to have opportunities in MTSD, we must protect out rigorous curriculum and special programs in order to continue
to be the premier provider of education. Experience in retail buying and Sports Entertainment has instilled disciplined fiscal
responsibility and presented exposure to high level negotiating. Thank you for attending tonight’s forum. Whether you vote
for me or either of the other two extremely qualified candidates, please make sure you VOTE on April 6, 2010. If you will be
traveling the week of April 5, remember to vote absentee. I also encourage “new voters” to exercise their newly acquired
right of passage and VOTE!

The Mequon-Thiensville Education Foundation is currently soliciting nominations for Excellence in
