ONLINE RETAILER ¢ ¢ An online retailer sells products to end users over the internet. Example: Amazon BRICK-AND-MORTAR RETAILER ¢ ¢ A brick-and-mortar retailer is the opposite of an online retailer. BRICKS-AND-CLICKS RETAILER ¢ ¢ A bricks-and-clicks retailer is a retail store that sells products both in stores and online. Example: Konzum RETAIL CHAIN ¢ ¢ A retail chain is a group of stores that are owned by the same company. Example: Billa, Kaufland... 5 18.1.2017. INDEPENDENTLY OWNED RETAIL STORE ¢ ¢ An independently owned retail store is not part of a chain. Examples: small, local stores DEPARTMENT STORE ¢ ¢ A department store is a large retail store that offers many different types of products (food, clothes, electronics...) Examples: Sears, Macy's, and Harrod's 6 18.1.2017. DISCOUNT STORE ¢ ¢ A discount store is a type of retail store that offers merchandise at a lower price than many of its competitors. Examples: outlet stores, discount grocery stores SPECIALTY STORE ¢ ¢ A specialty store is a type of retail store that specializes in one kind of product. Example: Yankee Candle Company is an example of a specialty store. They specialize in candles and do not sell many other products. 7 18.1.2017. CONVENIENCE STORE ¢ A convenience store is a store in a convenient location which offers a small number of goods for purchase. These items are often priced higher than they are at other retail locations. Convenience stores usually have extended hours, and some are open 24 hours a day. RETAIL PRICING STRATEGIES (1) ¢ ¢ LOSS-LEADER PRICING (e.g. at supermarkets) – some products are sold at unprofitable prices in order to attract customers to buy other products that are profitable ODD-EVEN PRICING – many retailers offer goods at prices such as $ 29.99 as they believe customers see such prices closer to $20.00 than to $30.00 RETAIL PRICING STRATEGIES (2) ¢ ¢ GOING-RATE PRICING – if a product is similar to a product sold by a competitor, some retailers adjust their price to the same level PRESTIGE / IMAGE PRICING – luxury products must have high prices; otherwise the targer customers would not buy them (e.g. Rolex watches) 11 18.1.2017.
