A Milestone Birthday for IPS
A Few Days in the
Mountains
In June, Cathleen and I attended the annual NYSAIS Early Childhood/Lower School
Heads Conference at Mohonk Mountain
House in upstate NY. This is usually the
highlight of my spring. I not only enjoy
spending time with my colleagues in a
beautiful setting, but the conference topics
are usually very interesting and thought
provoking. This year the title of the conference was “What makes a Child Ready for
Kindergarten?” The panel consisted of four
very well accomplished professionals.
I would like to share with you some of the
most interesting points that I came away
with.
Dr. Barbara Novick spoke about brain development. She said that from conception
to the age of six is the fastest rate of brain
development. At birth all the wires are
where they should be, but they aren’t all in
working order yet. Maturation of the brain
is uneven and takes place in spurts, rapidly

A big thank you to everyone in The International Preschools
community who took part in our fiftieth anniversary year celebrations
and activities. It was a time to reflect on our beginnings and a time to
look forward to our future. The planning started back in 2012 when
we realized the anniversary year was a milestone to celebrate.
We put together a year-long series of events that brought the celebration to current
and former students, parents, faculty, staff and board members. Carole Sleeper,
Parents’ Association President and Jackie Ahn, PA President Elect, were invaluable
in recruiting current parents to volunteer and attend every event. Thank you to
Donna Cohen, Paul Kane and the IPS Board for their support and leadership.
Our best resource for planning was
the many past parents, staff and board
members who have stayed connected to
the school long after their reasons for daily
contact had ended. Dr. Edward Davies,
founding member of the IPS board, was
our link to the earliest days. Former
location director, Joan Colen organized
our impressive trove of memorabilia into
a true archive and hosted many in our
community on a trip down memory lane.
These opportunities for reminiscing helped
us build a contact list so we were able to
invite participation by personal contact,
mail and email. We even had a presence
on Facebook!
Enjoy the recap and photos of each
event, starting on page 8.

in some areas and more slowly in others. Thus we see such a
wide range of abilities in children up to the age of five. Executive function, the ability to plan and modulate behavior, is not
generally in place until age six. Thus age six is a benchmark
year when children are ready to learn what used to be considered a first grade curriculum.
Soifer, a speech pathologist who uses a cognitive linguistic approach with her patients. She feels that play helps to construct
knowledge; play involves thinking, problem solving, negotiation and following social rules. Dr. Soifer teaches the value of
putting away all electronics and being with, and playing with,
your child! Make them the most important thing at that time!
Talk to each other! In the classroom a good teacher will model
the thought process. They will “think” out loud. They will say
things like
Dr. Novick believes that before age six, an appropriate curriculum teaches children how to:
•
ask good questions
•
find their own answers
•
think outside the box
•
collaborate with a partner to get things done
•
find multiple solutions to questions raised
•
be flexible
Dr. Novick is concerned that our increased expectations of a
five year old today, and our accelerated kindergarten curriculum over the past decades, is harmful to children. There is no
data to suggest that brain pathway connections in young children are developing more rapidly than in the past. A five year
old brain is primed to learn in the areas bulleted above, and
a head start in these areas could be correlated with ongoing
success inside and outside the classroom.
•
I’m thinking about…
•
What do I need to know…
•
I’m wondering…
•
How can we do this?
•
What happened?
•
What can we do about it?
•
That’s a great question!
They model for children that thinking is an activity and a
source of fun. If a Martian came to earth, what would you tell
them about?
She further reminded us that to tell a story you have to plan
and organize. A four and a half to five year old can tell a story
involving a central character, using logical sequence, including
I was also very impressed by what I learned from Dr. Lydia

a series of adventures and feelings, and uses the words “and,”
“but” and “because.” Their story will be open-ended. It is so
important for parents to do things with their children and
talk about what they are doing. Dr. Soifer also suggests that to
get a child to share information, it’s best to make a comment,
rather than ask a question. She says a comment will generate
a conversation.
pearls of wisdom interesting and useful when spending time
with your child. Dr. Novick and Dr. Soifer, and all the work
they do with young children, are worth a deeper look.

News from Admissions
As we celebrated our 50th anniversary AND the opening of
our beautiful new East 86th Street location, hundreds of
young children and their parents visited IPS for the first time.
After many open houses, tours and receptions, we are looking
forward to welcoming 198 new students in September 2014.
Among these are 67 younger siblings who will be joining their
big brothers or sisters at the three locations.
We are so very grateful to the Japanese Parents Association
who organized and executed with great skill all of our important mailings.
It is impossible to express our gratitude to the indefatigable
members of the Parents Association who helped organize and
attended every event to welcome new families. You are definitely our best advertisement.
Sadly, we said good-bye to Deirdre Martin and we wished her
well as she and her family moved to Hong Kong in December.
She is sorely missed by the admissions team and all who had
the privilege of knowing her. We miss you, Deirdre! But we
stayed calm and carried on! In September, Susan Ehrlich will
be joined at West 76th Street by Mary Busby. Amanda Quinn
will conduct admissions tours at East 86th Street with Martha
Smeaton. And Daryl Katz and Cathleen Vasserman will continue meeting applicants at 45th Street. Amanda and Daryl
both helped boost enrollment by giving birth to future IPS
students this Spring. Congratulations to you both!
I would like to extend a special THANK YOU to the parents
who overcame fears of public speaking and shared their own
personal IPS experiences at our monthly admissions information meetings. This past year, Mary and Paul Busby, Livia
and Van Nguyen, Joanna Walsh (twice!), Brad Ennals, Lotta
Tahtinen, Rajesh Midha, Manisha Manglani, Sheree Chiou,
James Gerding, Jackie Ahn, Paul Britton, David Bear, and the
team of Jen Bobker and Lara Chassin charmed our audiences
with their heartfelt stories of life at IPS. With this great group
of cheerleaders, it’s no wonder that so many families want to
send their children to IPS!
Thanks to Amy Lorowitz and Ben Kelly, they kept us on our
toes throughout the year. Thank you, Amy, for greeting every
family at 45th Street with your beautiful smile, and for organizing all of our admissions events. Ben supported us behind
the scenes while managing the After School Program and
Summer Camp.

Family Picnic in Central Park
The poster said, “Come One, Come All,” and that’s
just what we did. More than 500 people from the IPS
community came to Central Park on May 17th where we
enjoyed the beautiful weather, socialized and participated in carnival games, face painting, balloon twisting, and glitter tattoos topped off with a bit of magic.
Children enjoyed playing builders and bulldozers, alien
pinball and popcorn toss. The younger ones squealed
with glee while jumping on Benny Bulls and waving
bubble wands. Of course, no picnic is complete without
treats. Families snacked on apples, hummus, sandwiches and cotton candy. Many thanks to the face painters
and balloon twisters who delighted children the entire
afternoon, and a special shout out to Josh Male, dad at
IPS 86th Street and owner of Gate Hill Day Camp, for
donating the activities and games; Scotto’s for providing the sandwiches, and all the parents who volunteered
their time and effort. This event’s enormous success can
also be attributed to the diligence and hard work of my
wonderful and supportive co-chairs, Stephanie Lobron
and Tom Dunigan. We hope next year’s picnic will be
an even greater event. So remember, “Come One, Come
All” to the IPS Spring 2015 Picnic!

International Visitor Tours 86th Street
Mrs. Sahar Haider O. Hajjar, wife of the Ambassador of
the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, visited the 86th Street
location of The International Preschools in early June.
Mrs. Hajjar was interested in visiting IPS as she is
involved with managing an early childhood centre in
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. While touring our newest facility
and meeting the faculty, Mrs. Haijar observed many
similarities with her own program in Riyadh but was
particularly impressed with the state of the art facility,
the teachers resources and the professionalism of the
teachers.

A “Lesson from Lynne” on Holidays
To help your children get the most out of this time
of year, I recommend that you prepare them. If
you celebrate Thanksgiving, take some time a week
or two before to share your family Thanksgiving
photos from last year and talk about how your family
celebrated this holiday. Don’t do this too early, since
children don’t have a sophisticated sense of time.
A story about your child at last year’s Thanksgiving
feast will also go a long way. Just as a side note, in
general, children love to hear stories about when they
were little. (My own adult sons still enjoy this!)
Between now and the end of the year, all of us will be
spending a lot of time celebrating. No sooner have
we cleaned up the Thanksgiving turkey leftovers than
the December holidays are upon us. Special events
and celebrations that fill the end of the year can overload our already busy lives, making our time even
more limited.
Magazines, newspapers and television are already
reminding us about the joys of this time of year.
But in reality it is not always easy. If you think the
festivities are stressful for you, they can be doubly
anxiety provoking for your children. Children pick up
on their parents cues and they feel their own stress
from different schedules that may include extra
family outings, special activities and excessive food.
Then before the next round of holidays, again share
photos and stories with your child. The more you can
bring these holidays alive for your children before
they occur, the better equipped they will be to adjust
to changes in their routine and the more the whole
family can focus on the holiday and each other.
Children don’t have the tools to cope with the
excitement and interruption since they thrive on
routines and structure. Also, young children have
limited holiday experiences: although they know
holidays are special, the very youngest children
haven’t had enough holiday experiences to fully
remember and understand what that means for
them. Anticipation of unknown events can get
children overly excited and even anxious.
Best wishes for a joyous, calm holiday season.

Ongoing Schools Results
Changes are coming in private school kindergarten admissions! After years of questions about the validity of standardized tests for young children, the 2013-14 admissions season
was the last year that most private schools will require or even
consider the test known informally in New York City as the
“ERB” for kindergarten admissions. The official name of the
test is the Early Childhood Admissions Assessment, given
by testers employed by the Educational Records Bureau. This
test will now only be required of kindergarten applicants in a
handful of schools. (Many schools will continue to use the ERB
or other standardized tests for older applicants.)
The big news in public school admissions is the new online
application. In January, parents were able to apply to up to
twenty zoned and non-zoned general education programs.
Admission priority is given to zoned children, but if space is
available, places will be given to out of zone applicants. When
initial placement offers were made in April, many schools had
waiting lists for even zoned children! However, once Gifted
and Talented placements were made later in the spring, waiting lists began to clear and all zoned students were seated. The
Department of Education will maintain waiting lists through
October and promises to contact families if a school they
ranked higher becomes available.
ISAAGNY (Independent Schools Admissions Association of
Greater New York) member schools have developed a “toolbox” of more than a dozen assessment activities. Applicant
children will be asked to work on a few of these activities
during their school visit. Schools will be able to choose activities that assess skills that are important to their own program
and make their own observations about each child. Most
schools are making the child’s visit longer and hiring additional staff to accommodate the on-site assessment. Application
fees may increase, but most parents will no longer have to pay
for the ERB test.
Zoned schools remain a popular choice for IPS families. We
saw quite a few parents turn down private school seats or
G and T options because they wanted their children in their
neighborhood school. Next fall sixty-five IPS graduates will
enroll at zoned or district general education schools, ten will
enroll in G and T programs and four will enroll in Hunter College Elementary School.
As always at The International Preschools, families move
abroad, either to their home countries or on an international assignment. Five IPS grads started kindergarten in a new
country this fall.
Even though this year’s applicants took the ERB, most private
schools considered the child’s visit the most important part of
their selection process. Fifty-five children from IPS will start
kindergarten at private schools this fall.
Whether a child is continuing on to a school just around the
corner or halfway around the world, we hope all our former
families keep in touch with The International Preschools!

A Graduate Comes Home
When I graduated from The International Preschools on East
45th Street in the spring of 1993, I had discovered a few
truths about the world: there were not, after all, monsters living in my closet, it was a daily delight to live in the excitement
and diversity of New York, and I absolutely loved school.
tions, as a microcosm of the globe. My mother, a high school
teacher who was in graduate school when I was in preschool,
has said she chose IPS because of its embrace of diversity
and difference and its openness to recognizing both individual uniqueness and shared human values.
Now that I am, twenty two years later, about to join the faculty on West 76th Street, those truths are still true. Closets hold
nothing scary beyond the occasional long-forgotten item of
clothing, and except for the years I went away for college, I am
still thrilled to live in the great world city of New York. Most
of all, I still love school.
When I visited the 76th Street location this past spring for
my interview, one of my former teachers, Klara Reisinger,
recognized me - even though she had last seen me when I
was four years old - and greeted me with a warm hug. The
creativity, enterprise, and delight in the world that I learned
at IPS have stayed with me and it is a remarkable gift that
now I will be joining the staff whose care and teaching
started me on my life’s journey. As a classroom teacher, I am
eagerly looking forward to this coming year and hope there
will be many opportunities to help students discover the
truths and wonders that await them.
IPS introduced me to so much: to the laws of physics as I
pedaled a tricycle around the climbing structure in the middle
of the gym to find the faster you go, the more centripetal force
makes you dizzy; to the alchemy of art, dressed as a tree for
Halloween in brown leggings and a green turtleneck festooned
with a variety of both actual and paper leaves and branches, I
could embody all four seasons at once; to the wonder of global
community, as we passed the water pitcher past each of our
families’ national flags; to the possibilities of imagination
brought to bear on real problems, as I sat at my friend Peter’s
kitchen table, planning how we might construct a zipline that
would span the interior of the block to connect his window on
41st Street to mine on 40th Street.

Thank You from the Parents’ Association President!
I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of
The International Preschools community for the
past five years.
The international community that is comprised by our IPS
families represents the diversity that makes New York so
special and is one of greatest benefits of living and raising our
children here. Being immersed within this diverse community
has yielded many benefits for our children in their friendships,
experiences and perspectives. My three-year-old son often
asks me when we can go to India to visit his friend who moved
back there earlier this year. My daughter, who graduated from
IPS last year, continues to celebrate Diwali each year with one
of her IPS Crèche friends. The Winter Solstice celebrations
and the individual family visits that teach our children about
other family traditions have been wonderful experiences.
The school’s structured, play based curriculum and warm,
supportive and nurturing environment help our children
to grow, think, learn to solve problems, communicate,
collaborate and understand how to be positive members of a
community. Our children have learned so much each day and
have grown into better people all while “playing” and having
fun. The foundation of a love of learning and appreciation for
community that IPS has instilled in our children will stay with
them for their lifetimes.
put into each and every event. I want to take this opportunity
to thank all of the volunteers who have committed their time,
resources, ideas and energy to the school and its many events
that rely on parent participation. I feel lucky to have been able
to volunteer alongside you and make friendships that will
last a lifetime. I have learned so much from so many about
parenting, friendship and life in general. I wish all IPS families
a lifetime of health and continued happy experiences while
learning!
I am so grateful to Jacqueline Ahn for her encouragement,
tireless efforts, friendship and commitment. She is always inspiring and is going to be an exceptional Parents’ Association
President next year!
I was so happy to be here to celebrate the 50th Anniversary
year! It is hard to express my appreciation for everyone who
makes up our wonderful community: the families, faculty,
support staff, administrative leadership and the Board of
Trustees. The history of our school is as unique and inspiring
as the people who have created this special place – both those
who have been here for so many years and those who have
recently been attracted to the school and its mission. It is
extraordinary how many of our parents return as staff to the
school because it is a place to which they feel so connected and
do not want to leave even when their children do.
Thank you for making my year as Parents’ Association President so rewarding. I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate having the opportunity to take on this role this year. The
support of our Parents’ Association has been tremendous and
it is awe-inspiring to watch the commitment and enthusiasm

50th Anniversary Gala
like to express a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of the parents,
teachers, staff, and friends who volunteered their time and
talent, donated or solicited gifts, attended the Gala, and bid
on the auction items. The night was flawless, attendance was
astounding, and enthusiasm palpable. The event’s success
could not have been achieved without the help and input of so
many amazing people. We would like to offer a special thanks
to our incredible group of teachers and staff members who
donated AMAZING play dates and events to the auction and
to our Class Parents for their creative ideas and priceless class
projects.
The Golden Anniversary Gala was held
on May 1, 2014 at 583 Park Avenue to
celebrate The International Preschools’
50th year. This incredible venue was
transformed into an elegant Gala space
by a group of devoted IPS parents of
both current students as well as alumni. We hosted over 500 guests, which
included both current and new families, alumni, current and former staff
members, teachers, as well as Board
members.
In addition, we were incredibly fortunate to have two very
special guests attend to help celebrate this memorable occasion – Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, the wife of Secretary General
of the United Nations, and Ms. Samantha Power, United
States Ambassador to the United Nations and IPS mother.
The evening began with an elegant cocktail hour and a silent
auction that featured a wide variety of items for even the most
discriminating bidders! The evening’s program was capped off
by speakers Donna Cohen (Director), Elizabeth Patrick (Chair
of the Board of Trustees), Samantha Power (United States
Ambassador to the UN), Valerie Kennedy (IPS International
Liaison) and Carole Sleeper (PA President). In addition, IPS
honored Trustee Dr. Edward Davies for more than 50 years of
commitment and support.
We are also thrilled to report that the 2014 Gala raised over
$160,000. This great accomplishment reflects the generosity,
spirit, and commitment of the IPS community. We would
The 50th Anniversary Gala was made possible only through
the support of an amazing group of committee members.
The Production Chairs and Committee, which envisioned the
evening from start to finish, designed and assembled all of the
décor, worked with the AV Crew and made sure that we had
a flawless and enjoyable evening: Nicole Mata, Lara Chassin,
Tara Hanson, Jennifer Bobker. The Acquisitions and Auction
Committee, which catalogued, prepared and organized over
350 auction items: Joanna Walsh, Mary Busby, Livia Nguyen,
Lauren Chung, Sheree Chiou, Aditi Deeg, Bonnie Tellgmann,
Elizabeth Traub. Richard Werner and his IT team, who were
hard at work from the moment the doors opened. Our location Acquisition Co-Chairs: Jennifer Sauer, Amber Paquette,
Ellen Lundquist, Stephanie Sobel-Lobron. Former PA President, Sunny Nagel, served as our source of experience and
wisdom. Thanks to the IPS Staff for all their hard work and
tireless support in making the evening possible.
A complete list of all of our generous underwriters, donors,
solicitors and volunteers can be found in this issue of The
Scribbler.

We also want to thank our incredible outgoing PA President,
Carole Sleeper, who provided our headquarters and whose
enthusiasm, optimism, and energy motivated us all to push
through the nights and weekends and whose leadership made
the event an incredible success.
And, finally, we owe our sincere gratitude to our Director,
Donna Cohen, and our CAO, Paul Kane, for their guidance
and support as well as their overall leadership of IPS.
It was an honor and a pleasure to serve The International Preschools by planning and producing the 50th Gala. We hope
that you all share in our fond memories and look forward to
next year’s Spring Benefit!

Ana Maria DeSouza Retires after 30 Years
This past year, IPS celebrated the thirty year
career of Ms. Ana Maria DeSouza. During those
years Ms. DeSouza worked as an assistant teacher at a variety of locations including 74th Street
and most recently 76th Street. On May 29th, the
76th Street Pre-K classroom hosted a party for
Ms. DeSouza who had also decided to retire at
the beginning of the school year. The room was
filled with students who were educated by her
and ranged from age four to thirty plus. Attendees wrote or drew their good wishes for Ana Maria on fabric squares that were assembled into

Upper West Side apartment building in February
and she and her sisters were forced to evacuate
the building. Many IPS families reached out to
the school to offer services and financial support
to assist Ms. DeSouza during her displacement.
The following people contributed to the Fire
Fund which continues to aid Ms. DeSouza until she is fully settled back into her apartment
building.

Family Yankees Outing
Sunday September 7, 2014
Even before classes started, The International
Preschools community came together to watch the
New York Yankees play the Kansas City Royals at
Yankee Stadium. The Yankees lost, but a good time
was had by all. Surely many of the preschoolers
will have lasting memories of being in the stands
for the team’s tribute to retiring shortstop Derek
Jeter.
Everyone enjoyed refreshments served on the
stadium’s Malibu Rooftop Deck and delighted in
seeing the IPS contingent welcomed on the video
board!
