On January 19th, 2017
we will be hosting Marilyn Tanner-Blasiar as
guest speaker at our
POPs meeting. Marilyn is
a Registered DietitianPediatric Dietitian at
Washington University
School of Medicine, as
well as being the national
spokesperson for the
Academy of Nutrition
and Dietetics. Marilyn
also happens to be the
mother of two 5 year old
boys who started at
Chesterfield Academy at
4 months old and graduated with us in 2015!
During Marilyn’s discussion with us she will focus on picky eaters and
how to help children
make healthy choices.
The overall message
Marilyn wants to share is
one of balance, variety
and moderation; enjoying your food, but making healthy choices most
of the time!
So many of us struggle
with getting our children
to try new foods, broadening the spectrum of
foods they will eat, and
being discouraged at
meal times. Join us for an
hour with a professional
that will have some tips
and tricks to help us better understand our picky
eaters and how to help
our children build a
healthy relationship with
food!
Toys for Tots
Important Dates:
December 16th
Toys for Tots ends
December 16th
Classroom Parties
December 26th30th Closed in
observance of the
Christmas and
New Years holidays
During the holiday
season we are partnering with the Toys
for Tots campaign to
collect new, unopened toys for children in the St. Louis
area. We will have
donation bins set up
until the morning of
December 16th. The
Toys for Tots campaign began in 1974
and has since delivered hundreds of millions of toys to those in
need. With all of the
toys collected staying
in the community they
have been collected
in.
I love listening to the
children as they excitedly place a toy in
the bin that they
have picked out.
Teaching children to
have a heart for others
and understand the
importance of giving
are invaluable life
long lessons.
Notes from Nurse Jenn
It seems the cold weather is
here to stay. Here are some
winter safety tips to remember this year that will help
you and your kiddos safe
and warm during the long
winter months.
Have younger children take
frequent breaks to come
inside for a warm drink.
Never send children outside
in extreme weather conditions such as snowstorms.
Tell children not to put their
tongues on cold metal. It
may sound silly, but some
kids still do it.
Dress children in several
layers of clothing. If they
get too warm, they can re-
move one layer at a time.
Always remove children’s
wet clothing and boots immediately.
Make sure children wear a
hat because most body heat
is lost through the head.
Have children keep their
ears covered at all times to
prevent frostbite.
Nosebleeds: If your child
suffers from winter nosebleeds, try using a cold air
humidifier in the child's
room at night. Saline nose
drops may help keep tissues
moist. If bleeding is severe
or recurrent, contact your
pediatrician.
Viruses: The viruses that
cause colds and flu tend to
be more common in the
winter. Frequent hand washing and teaching your child
to sneeze or cough away
from others may help reduce the risk of colds and
flu.
The Flu: Children between
the ages of 23 months and 6
years old should get the
influenza vaccine to reduce
their risk of getting the flu.

Healthy FUNdamentals
In this month’s Healthy
Fundamentals, we will
be talking about the skin
we live in! We will either be watching a short
informational video
about the skin by Magic
Box Animation or we will
read Your Skin by Melvin and Gilda Berger
and do an activity to illustrate the importance
of keeping your skin
healthy.
Later in the month, we
will learn about the
teacher’s health topic of
choice. This may include
any health topic of interest or a topic that may
need revisiting to highlight the importance.
Did you know that
our skin is the
heaviest organ in the
body?! Our skin
makes up about 16%
of our total body
weight!
Extra Dress up Clothes
The children at Chesterfield Academy love
to play dress up!
If you are looking for
something to do with
your child’s Halloween costume after the
holiday or are changing out any dress up
clothes you have at
home, think of us!
Both the boys and
girls enjoy playing
pretend and putting
on dress up clothes.
We currently have
several tutu’s and similar dresses are in
need of any superhero, army, police officer, and other com-
munity helpers costumes.
All new or gently used
items are greatly appreciated!

Adventures in Enrichments ~ Ms. Kristen
The Chesterfield
Academy Enrichment
Program was created
six years ago as a way
to add to and enhance
the everyday learning
that takes place here
at our school. Over
the years the program
has grown and
changed in many
ways. We have sent
countless children off
to Kindergarten as
confident readers,
with praises coming
back from the elementary schools about
how prepared the
Chesterfield Academy
children are! Expanding children’s
knowledge of math and
science skills, and
building strong bodies
with Music and Movement. Our Cooking
Enrichment combines
numerous skills all in
one super fun class!
Learning while making
delicious treats that
they get to eat!

Spanish Newsletter ~ Ms. Manuella
¡ Hola familias!
I hope everyone had
a wonderful Thanksgiving
and is ready to kick off the
holiday season!
Your children have been doing wonderful in Spanish
class! They have learned lots
of songs recently and it's
amazing to see them remembering and retelling not only
words but full sentences in
another language.
They enjoyed the Spanish
version of Itsy Bitsy Spider
during “Creepy Crawlies”
week.
La arañita
Subió, subió, subió.
Vino la lluvia
Y se la llevó.
Salió el sol
Y todo se secó,
Y la arañita
Subió, subió, subió.
I introduced “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” during
the “Our Five Senses” theme
and the children love to sing
that song as fast as possible!
Cabeza, hombros, rodil-
las y pies
Cabeza, hombros, rodillas y pies
Ojos, orejas, boca y nariz
Cabeza, hombros, rodillas y pies
Last but not least, is a song
that has been a hit every year
I have taught! It introduces
members of a family (dad,
mom, brother, sister and baby) in a very fun way.
El papá, el papa
¿Dónde está?
Aquí está,
Gusto saludarte, gusto
saludarte
Ya se va, ya se va.
La mamá, la mamá
¿Dónde está?
Aquí está,
Gusto saludarte, gusto
saludarte
Ya se va, ya se va.
El hermano, el hermano
¿Dónde está?
Aquí está,
Gusto saludarte, gusto
saludarte
Ya se va, ya se va.
Coats, hats, and gloves!
During the winter
months the children
will continue to play
outside in the fresh
air! Please be sure
you are bringing a
coat every day for
your child to wear.
You may also bring
hat and gloves for
your child to wear
outside. Please label all of your children’s belongings.
We follow the state
of Missouri guidelines for temperature and wind chill
in determining when
it is safe to play outside.

Children at Chesterfield Academy learn through hands on
experiences that don’t always result in a project to take
home. Below are some pictures that show the learning
taking place in our school!
