We are so grateful for your ongoing support of YWCA Carlisle. At our 96th Annual Meeting in October, we
reflected on the past 2014-15 fiscal year, shared visioning for the future, and kicked off new terms for our Board
of Directors. This past year has been a time of change and growth for our organization, welcoming new staff,
forming new relationships and partnerships, and recommitting ourselves to the mission work of YWCA: the
elimination of racism and the empowerment of women and girls!

Ours is a powerful mission and we are thankful to the many people and businesses who walk with us towards
fulfilling our purpose and passion. We know you have placed a great deal of trust in us and we will continue with
our fiscally sound practices and raise money and awareness to get the tough tasks accomplished.
From dedicated staff to hotline volunteers, from individual donors to corporate sponsors, from preschool
students to counseling clients, the collective power of people to move our mission forward and closer to fruition
is possible each and every day. For all of your support—past, present and future—we humbly thank you and look
forward to remaining faithful stewards of the gifts you share with us in order to maintain and advance
partnerships that create a bright future for all members of our communities in the Greater Carlisle Area and
Cumberland County.
We want to inspire people. We want our youth to feel confident and say, “I am smart, I am strong, and I can do
anything!” We want people of all backgrounds, race, gender, religions, and sexual orientation to feel welcome
and safe in our building at 301 G Street and to participate in the programs, services and events we offer annually.
We are YWCA Carlisle...champions of people, purpose and passion!

This year’s Youth Leadership Conference was entitled “Race Still Matters? Race Still
Matters.” There were 35 students in attendance representing six school groups. 94%
of the students stated they had an increased understanding of racism.
When asked will you do anything differently as a result of attending the Youth
Leadership Conference a few comments from the attendees included: “I will be
more sensitive to racial offenses at school. I will try to be more empathetic towards
different people. I will watch what I say and maybe what my friends do and maybe
call them out on things. I will try to stop the small things like racist jokes. “
Gather the Women- The women participated in a health and wellness program that was added to our programming due to
a grant from Partnership for Better Health. This was instituted for the whole family. Both the women and children set goals
and worked toward achieving them on a quarterly basis. The program included lessons on healthy cooking, weight
management, effective communication advocating for themselves and their children in a setting that included yoga as well
as other stress relief techniques.
Ten families, for a total of 13 babies, were assisted by receiving no-cost diapers from YWCA Carlisle’s partnership with
Healthy Steps Diaper Bank program.

YWCA Carlisle honored an individual with an
outstanding commitment to eliminating racism
and fostering social justice. The Racial Justice
Award honors a resident of Cumberland County
whose work (personal or professional), attitude
and beliefs reflect and model a passion toward
eliminating racism and promoting peace, justice,
freedom, and dignity for all people.
“I tell my students that standing for what they believe will be the greatest challenge of their lives, but that through all of
their hardships and frustrations, the Diversity Club will be there for them as a bolster so that they know that they have a
family, a team. I tell them that their work, determination, and love will change the world. Through the Racial Justice Award,
you showed them that people hear them, acknowledge them, and stand with them. There is nothing greater than this: to
know that you are not alone,” expressed Ms. Shupp.

Gather the Women was evaluated by Professor Andy Skelton and his Health Studies Research Seminar class at Dickinson
College. Past members of the program were surveyed about their experiences as group members and life after. Many
women expressed ways in which the program has helped them reach goals, grow their level of self-esteem, and use lessons
from the group in their daily lives. Additionally, three of our families participated in Incredible Years/Dinosaur School
training—a 5-month program designed to strengthen parenting skills and to prevent and treat behavior problems in young
children.

George Award—Barbara Kohutiak
As the famed African proverb states, “It takes a
village to raise a child” and YWCA Carlisle was
thankful for the many community partners that
collaborated with us to help breathe life into this
phrase…Hope Station, Dickinson College Students,
Local Church Groups, Carlisle Regional Medical
Center, Mayor Scott and Carlisle Police Department,

PCAR, District Attorney’s Office, Cumberland County
Commissioners, Children and Youth Services,

more valuable partners and agency leaders.
Retiring Executive Director, Barbara Kohutiak, was
awarded the 2014 Ruth K. and Nancy J. George Award for
service to the agency and community for nearly 30 years.
Each year this honor is bestowed upon a woman who has
made a commitment to YWCA in a variety of ways, which
include volunteer efforts and financial contributions. Ms.
Kohutiak, a one time Preschool Director then leader for
the organization, led with great passion for the mission

isolated and disconnected from peers and
GIRLZ Camp provided an opportunity for girls to
connect with one another through a week-long,
psycho-educational and recreational group
experience.

Homework Club served 33 elementary age
students in two locations at Memorial Park Hope
Station and Grandview Court. Students completed
homework assignments daily, learned important social
skills, and received healthy snacks. To help work on
reading skills and make children comfortable with
reading aloud, we collaborated with a program called
“Tail Waggin’ Tutors.” By incorporating therapy dogs,
that the children read aloud to, we hoped to increase
their self confidence and improve their literacy skills.
Young Wonders Summer Day Camp (YOWO)
served 86 campers from June through the end of August.
Numerous scholarships were made available courtesy
of funding from United Way Carlisle & Cumberland County as
well as Carlisle Kiwanis. YOWO offered weekly field trips,
swimming two days a week, plus featured a curriculum
focused on negating ‘brain drain’ over summer vacation.
YOWO created a fun and safe space for students who have
completed Kindergarten through 5th grade. The day camp
was affordable and accessible to all students and their
families.
