Words of Welcome & Announcements
Choral Call To Worship
Prayer of Invocation
O God, who is greater than the most powerful forces in this world, enable us to be still and know that You,
alone, are God. O Lord, who answers out of the whirlwind of everyday life, breathe in us Your Holy Spirit to
strengthen, comfort, and guide us in the midst of the storms which often engulfs us and threatens to pull us
away from Thee. O still, small voice, speak to us this hour and every hour of every day, so we might become
makers of Your peace in our homes, in our communities, in our world, so we may reveal Your love and grace.
Holy Lord, by Your grace and mercy, we come to worship and praise Thy name, to be renewed in the
fellowship of all who trust and call upon You. Lead our hearts and minds in thanksgiving and celebration as we
listen for Your voice and word, as we are prepared for the mission ahead, and as we respond to Your will. Holy
Lord, allow this time to be a time of joy and healing so we may return to the world with the Good News of Thy
love and peace. We pray all this in the name of the One who calmed the raging sea. Amen.

☼Affirmation of Faith A Creed in the Words of St. John
We believe that God is Spirit, and they who worship the Lord
must worship in spirit and in truth.
We believe that God is Light, and that if we walk in the light,
as the Lord is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.
We believe that God is love, and everyone who genuinely loves
is born of God and knows God.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God,
and God has given to us eternal life, and this life is in the Son.
We believe that Christ is the Resurrection and the Life,
And whoever believes in him, though they are dead, shall live.
We believe that we are the children of God, and the Lord has given us of the Spirit.
We believe that if we confess our sins, the Lord is faithful and just to forgive us our sins,
and cleanses us from all uncleanliness.
We believe that this world will pass away and the lust thereof,
but the one who does the will of God shall abide forever.
☼ Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

We Call Upon God In Confession
Call To Confession
Friends, our Lord, Jesus Christ, invites us by saying 7
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke
upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your
souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30;NIV)
May we approach our Lord with our sins and failures for we have nothing to fear. God’s love is upon us. God’s
grace enables us to give over to the Lord all which we would once try to hide. Join me in the prayer of
confession as found in your bulletin. Let us pray.
Prayer of Confession
Lord, instead of trusting You to guide us through the chaotic maze of life, we seek to hide behind Your
name and authority to avoid responsibility and basic human courtesy. Often, we use Your name and authority
as a justification to act in ways which do not glorify Thy name and robs Your authority of its true power to
transform the lives of others. Though we are Your Children, forgive us for acting more like children than
revealing we belong to Thee. Forgive us for our dishonesty and our lack of love for our neighbor as well as
You.
Personal Confessions (Silence)
Silence Breaker
Merciful God, hear our prayers, strengthen our spirits and allow Your Spirit to guide our souls in truth as
we care for the world You have given us and as we seek that You are present in our lives. We pray these
things in the name of Christ Jesus, our Lord, and remember again the prayer he taught us to pray when he
said, 7
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on
earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive
our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
The Kyrie
Lord, have mercy upon us / Christ, have mercy upon us / Lord, have mercy upon us.

Assurance of God’s Pardon
Friends, John, the Elder wrote, 7
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has
been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God
is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the
world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved
us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1st John 4:7-10;NIV)
Since God does love us and has given us the Son, and the Spirit, may we trust the Lord and believe the Good
News for in Jesus and because of Jesus we are forgiven and live in the grace and peace of God. Amen.

God’s Word Written
1 John 4:16-22;NIV – 1209/1841
7 God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. 17 In this way, love is made complete
among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. 18
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one
who fears is not made perfect in love. 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, "I love God,"
yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love
God, whom he has not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his
brother.
Prayer of Meditation
Loving God, here we are in Your presence, wanting to be Your disciples, needing to hear Your word. Send
Your Holy Spirit upon us that we may hear You speaking to us in very real, personal and compelling ways.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, we give You our hearts. Amen.
God’s Word Spoken
What Forgiveness Is Not
Last week, I was introduced to an internet blog on which the author told of an interesting conversation he
had with one of his female students. According, to the author, the student wanted to visit with him to discuss
some difficulties she was having. Of particular concern were problems she was having in her family life.(*1)
During the meeting, the student talked for some time about her family situation and gradually the
conversation turned to other areas and interests of life. When she reached spiritual matters, (oh, this author is
a professor and an experimental psychologist at a christian university) their meeting had the following
exchange 7
“I need to spend more time working on my relationship with God.” (Student)
“Why would you want to do that?” (Professor)
“What do you mean?” (Student, startled)
“Well, why would you want to spend any time at all on working on your relationship with God?”
(Professor)
“Isn’t that what I’m supposed to do?” (Student)
“Let me answer by asking you a question. Can you think of anyone, right now, to whom you
need to apologize? Anyone you’ve wronged?” (Professor)
Ministry of Word - 2012 03 04 - Relationship With God
5
“Yes.” (Student, thoughtfully)
“Well, why don’t you give them a call today and ask for their forgiveness? That might be a
better use of your time than working on your relationship with God.” (Professor)
At this point, the author of the blog realized that he had overwhelmed his student and stated that he did clarify
his position and intent so the student would not think he was demeaning or rejecting her faith response or
trying to say that spending time with God was a waste of time. No, what I read later from the author in further
comments outside of this particular blog leads me to believe that he did want to reassure the student that her
faith response was a proper response but there is more to working on a relationship with God than what he
pretty much knew she had in mind. The author stated, 7
7 I was trying to push back on a strain of Christianity I see in both my students and the larger
Christian culture. Specifically, when the student said, “I need to work on my relationship with
God,” I knew exactly what she meant.
And the author goes on to write, 7
It meant praying more, getting up early to study the Bible, to start going back to church. Things
along those lines. The goal of these activities is to get “closer” to God. To “waste time with
Jesus.”
The author does cautions his readers not to misjudge his intentions by the previous statements because he
does state that there is nothing wrong with those activities in themselves. In fact, he does state that they are
commendable and vital to a vibrant spiritual life. What the author wants his readers to understand, however, is
that too often 7
“working on my relationship with God” has almost nothing to do with trying to become a more
decent human being.
Too often it is used as an excuse to pardon poor behavior and to separate oneself from the responsibility of
having a relationship with people and deal with the problems we all face.in life. Too often, working on a
relationship with God is seen as a justification for even rude behavior. The author does state later in his blog
that he has seen the post-Church crowd in restaurants, and they many times turn out to be some of the worst
patrons concerning orders, patience and especially tips. They are some of the most insulting and downright
rude customers. And often it is covered over with “having a relationship with God.”
I wish the author would have documented his clarification to the student because I think it would have been
very enlightening. It would have been interesting to see what arguments the professor would have used to
defend his position and to clarify what it means to enter into a true relationship with God. It would be very
interesting to see what he said. However, he did not document his further conversation. Thus, we need to
imagine what he would have said. We need to imagine what he would have said because I admit that I am
guilty of emphasizing the necessity of have a relationship with God and hiding behind the phrase instead of
explaining it or living it. Many times I have told you that is important to have a relationship with God and I think
I have failed to tell you how.
I accept the guilt of emphasizing that it is necessary for us to have a relationship with God and I accept the
conviction that my emphasis may have been a little misdirected or incomplete. I say this because of a sermon
which was connected with the blog that I have been talking about.
In a subsequent sermon, another author wrote (*2) 7
A relationship with God is very important. It's just that, well, to be honest, I'm not always exactly
sure what the word "relationship" is supposed to mean. The preachers I've heard weren't
exactly forthcoming with further explanations either. They would say, "Go have a relationship.
Now!" and then act as if that settled everything, instead of opening a giant can labeled
"WORMS" and dumping it all over my lap. I believe people when they say that a relationship
Ministry of Word - 2012 03 04 - Relationship With God
6
with God is vital as well as important, but what the heck am I supposed to do about that? I want
the worms back in the can.
And, I am very guilty of doing what the preachers this author is referring to. On more than one occasion, I
have told you to have a relationship with God but what does it mean to have a relationship with God?
The best place I think to begin to understand what it means to have a relationship with God is probably
found in the first letter written by John, the Elder. There John writes, 7
20 If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not
st
love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. (1 John
4:20;NIV)
I say we need to begin here because John is absolutely correct in his assertion. How can you love God when
you hate your brother or sister? To be honest, you really cannot. You cannot because one, in a way, does
equal the other.
In mathematics, we are taught that an equal sign means that that which is on the right side of the sign is
equal to that which is on the left side of the sign. They balance one another. But to say that to love our brother
is absolutely equal to loving God is not truly theologically correct. Yes, they should be somewhat equal but to
say that one balances the other is not proper.
I say this because when Jesus as challenged as to the most important commandment, Jesus stated 7
37 Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love
your neighbor as yourself.' (Matthew 22:37-39;NIV)
Loving God was the first and greatest commandments according to Jesus and close behind it was loving your
neighbor. Jesus said they are “like,” similar, not exactly the same. And fortunately, in mathematics there is an
interesting sign or symbol which can represent this particular truth and that symbol is a wavy equal sign.
A wavy equal sign means that what is on the left side somewhat resembles or is close to that which is on
the right side and vice versa. The two are not exactly the same but very similar, And that is what I mean by if
you cannot love brother or sister, you cannot love God. There is a resemblance between the two sides of that
equation. And that is what John is trying to tell his readers as well. There is a connection between how you
love your brother or sister or show concern for them and your honest love of God. They may not be equal in
importance but they do reveal each other.
I say they “reveal” each other because how can you prove that you love God? If a person says they love
God, how can they prove it? If you say you love your spouse, I think your spouse would like to see a
demonstration of that love. Typically, we really do not need to demonstrate our love for our spouses because
we are always showing our love for our spouses through the various things which we do. If you need to
demonstrate your love to your spouse, I am afraid you have got some problems which you need to deal with. I
say that because we should always be showing our love for our spouse by how we treat them, interact with
them, show concern for them. Just to say that you love them is not enough and never will be enough. Love is
not words, it is actions.
Thus, as John writes, 7
If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. (1st John 4:20;NIV)
John wrote that because if someone says "I love God" but yet continues to hate either a brother or sister or
anyone, then their words are merely words. There is no action behind them, no force, no power.
Now, John's declaration that “if someone says "I love God" but yet hates someone else, then that person is
a liar” may be a little harsh. However, the lack of evidence does put the statement of "I love God" into question
because how otherwise can one prove that one loves God. Unless, there is some tangible proof, the statement
are merely words and will remain merely words. Actions is what we can truly trust to reveal the sincerity of our
intents, of our words. If all we can go on are words, then we have to question those words. To truly reveal that
Ministry of Word - 2012 03 04 - Relationship With God
7
we do love God, we have to go beyond mere words.
Jesus said, 7
7 everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who
built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and
beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But
everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish
man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds
blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
If we love God, then we need to show that love by caring for others. That way, we do build our faith and our
words on a rock. When the storms of criticism and doubt pour down upon the house we have built, the house
will stand. But if we depend upon just the words to hold the house together, it is like building a house on the
sands. When criticism, doubt, and questions crop up, it is questionable whether the house will remain
standing. Yes, a mild storm may not ruin the house but when the winds and the waves blow, the sand of our
words will be hard-pressed to hold the building together. Thus, the evidence of the love we show our brothers,
will show that a measure of God's love is within us and that we do love God in return.
That is pretty much how I believe the author of the blog redirected the student. I do think he pointed out to
her that if you want to have a relationship with God, you have to have relationships with other people. Having a
relationship with God is important but we cannot stay there. At some point we have to come down from the
mountain and enter into the world to reveal that the love of God, the love we have for God is real.
Couple weeks ago, I spoke about the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. In that sermon, I told about how
Jesus was changed. But, in reality how Peter, James and John were changed as well. I did not continue the
passage, however. And in many ways, what happens next is probably more important than what happened on
that mountain. Allow me to refresh your memory about the Transfiguration of Jesus.
In the synoptic Gospels, we are told that Jesus took Peter, James and John to a mountain. At that
mountain, Jesus was transfigured. As I said several weeks ago, we really do not know what or how Jesus was
transfigured, we just know that in the eyes of the disciples, he changed. Then, in all three of the synoptic
Gospels, we are told that Peter said to Jesus,7
"Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and
one for Elijah." (Mark 9:5;NIV)
We can take from that statement that Peter really want to stay there. Think about it, why would he not want to
stay? Before him, were the three most important people in his life – Jesus, Moses, Elijah. Before him and with
him, all which he had ever hoped for. So why not want to build a shelter for each and linger awhile?
However, for the ministry of Jesus and for the future ministry of the disciples, the mountaintop was not the
goal Jesus had in mind. The goal was to serve God. The next scene which is revealed to us, tell us of a cloud
descending upon Jesus, Moses, Elijah and the disciples and from that cloud comes the voice which says, 7
"This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!" (Mark 9:7;NIV)
Following this, we are then told, that Jesus led the disciples down off of the mountain. The Gospels of Matthew
and Mark tell us about the conversation which the disciples had as they moved from the mountaintop back to
where the other disciples were but following that, we are told about how the party, the mountaintop party, ran
into a mess when they returned to the other disciples. Mark records 7
14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the
teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were
overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. 16 "What are you arguing with them about?"
he asked. 17 A man in the crowd answered, "Teacher, I brought you my son, who is
possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him
to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your
Ministry of Word - 2012 03 04 - Relationship With God
8
disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not." (Mark 9:14-18;NIV)
Essentially, Jesus and the disciples left the peace and tranquility of the mountaintop and entered into the
corruption of everyday life. There was a problem. A man brought his possessed son Jesus or to his disciples
for help and the disciples were unable to provide that help.
The scene I imagine is like that in the movie, “The Secret of Santa Vittoria.” In the movie, the mayor of an
Italian wine-making hill village of Santa Vittoria, learns that the German occupation forces want to take all their
wine before the Allies show us. In an effort to keep the Germans from their million plus bottles, the
townspeople frantically try to hide it in a cave. The chaos which ensued at their first attempt was hysterical.
Mules running and bucking. Bottles flying and breaking. People yelling and no one listening. It was just plain
bedlam, until someone with a real plan walked up and took control. I could just imagine that was very similar to
the scene which Jesus, Peter, James and John walked into. Everything was out of control and Jesus had to
rescue the day.
And he does. He does because that is where real ministry is. Real ministry, real service to God is not done
on the mountaintop. Real service to God is done in the quagmire of the valley. It is done in the midst of the
mess of human life. It is done in contact and in relationship with our brothers and our sisters.
What the author of the blog was trying to push away was the idea that we can live totally in relationship
with God alone and not have to worry about how we live with one another. But that is not the truth. It is living in
relationship with one another that we reveal our relationship with God and how we love God. Bible study,
prayer, devotion, fasting, whatever other pious, spiritual activity we may engage in has its place in our spiritual
lives. Yes, those activities are very, very important because they do give direction and focus to our lives and
our ministries. However, they are not the end but the means by which we serve God.
Prayer has its purpose. It allows us to focus our attention on God, to give to God our concerns and to hear
God’s will. But if we just stop at prayer and do not go any further with what we are told to do, then what good
was the prayer? All we did was filled the air with words, if we just spoke and did not leave room of God to talk
to us. And if we heard but did not respond to God's word and serve that word, then we either did not hear the
Lord or simply choose not ignore them because we did not think them important or did not apply to us or
worse. James wrote, 7
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone
who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a
mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
(James 1:22-24;NIV)
We are created in the image of God, thus we should reveal God, not to God but to the world and that cannot
be accomplished by not engaging the world. It can only be done but actually engaging the world, having a
relationship with the world and those in it.
Thus, to think that we can dismiss the world by simply believing that we need to spend more time working
on our relationship with God and thus separating ourselves from the world is missing the point. We are to
spend time in the world, having a relationship with the world in order to have a true relationship with God.
As a pastor, I have discovered that I cannot truly serve God or this church unless I know you and have a
relationship with you. Therefore, I spend a lot of time with you-all. Some I visit on a regular bases in your
homes, especially our shut-ins. They cannot get to us, so I go to them. Some I visit at your place of business.
Not to distract you but to learn who you are and what you do. Some I visit whenever I may meet up with you,
be it in the grocery store or wherever. If I see you, I will try to greet you, much to the dismay and horror of my
family. I do that because I want to know you. I want to have a relationship with you. I go around this sanctuary
every Sunday morning shaking hands and hugging because you are important to me and to the ministry of this
church. I want to greet you because that is how I have a relationship with you. I visit the Sunday School
classes not to impress the class with my knowledge and insights but because I need to know that you want to
know. W want to know what hurts and what makes you happy. I want to know your sorrows and your joys. By
knowing these and many other things, I discover how I can minister to you, what I need to learn to help you.
Ministry of Word - 2012 03 04 - Relationship With God
9
And I cannot do that if I hold up in my office with an open Bible before me. That may be pious and
commendable but that does not really help you. I open the Bible because you need me to learn what it has to
say so I can help you live faithfully before the Lord. I have to have a relationship with you so I can help you
have a relationship with God and with one another as well.
Jesus said, 7
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one
another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John
13:34;NIV)
We reveal we belong to Christ, not by the prayers we offer, be they public or private, or the amount of
scripture we have studied, memorize or sneak into our conversations. We do not reveal that we belong to
Christ by how often or how hard we fast or perform any number of other acts of devotion and self-sacrifice.
We reveal that we are Jesus’ disciples by how we love one another and that can only be done by having a
relationship with one another. A genuine relationship in which share life together for the glory and honor of
God. Amen.
