WEEKLY NEWS March 1 , 2017 “NOTE” WORTHY PERFORMANCES It's been a big few weeks for Siouxland Christian's Choirs! On February 18, SCS High School Choir was invited to sing at the NAACP's Freedom Fund Banquet. This is a fundraiser for a scholarship funded by the NAACP. We were officially presented as the entertainment for the weekend and even mentioned on TV! We were personally thanked by several leaders and several guests who attended the banquet. Our performance was well-received and well-admired. What a wonderful opportunity for our choir! Additionally, on February 27th, thirty-one (!!!) of our finest middle school and high school singers attended the WVC Honor Choir. This all-day event brings the finest singers from every school in our conference to sing 4-5 pieces together with a guest conductor. The middle school was led by Michelle Swanson from the University of Northern Iowa. Her bubbly personality and brilliant leadership brought a stunning performance from our middle school students--and the middle school portion of the concert finished with a rousing, inspired performance of a spiritual entitled "Moses, Now Your People are Free!" I (Miss Hageman) can attest that I have never heard such a phenomenal middle school choir in person in my life. Prepare to be wowed by these middle schoolers in the spring! The high school choir was led by Dr. Russell Svenningsen from Augustana University. This wonderful director encouraged students all day to sing beautifully and uncover their "true voices." His leadership led to a stunning performance, including a gorgeous rendition of a piece called "Dreams of Thee." Our high school students were some of the best prepared in the conference and sang confidently and beautifully the whole day. Our school was well-represented with an enormous group of wonderful singers--and we brought one of the largest groups out of any school! Please take a moment to congratulate the following Honor Choir members if you see them. Big, amazing things are happening in the Siouxland Christian Fine Arts Department! Our Yearbook Staff is hard at work, putting together a great keepsake to remember the 2016-2017 school year. There are so many opportunities to capture these memories and we don’t want to miss a single event, so we are calling on our Eagle Family for some assistance. If you have pictures of school related events, that you would like to share with our yearbook staff, please email photos as an attachment to the following: Eagle Fans Elementary Sports MS Football Senior & Baby Pics Serving Siouxland Snap Chat NEW FAMILY REFERRALS As early enrollment is upon us, this is a quick reminder that Siouxland Christian has a great referral program. Eagle families can refer new families, resulting in an immediate $500 savings for the new family. Please remember that referrals must be presented at the time of enrollment and will not be accepted as valid afterward). Snap Chat photos will need to include multiple students and/or an SCS event, as well as text captioning the event that is taking place. All photos are subject to selection and final approval. COLD & FLU SEASON The cold and flu season is upon us. Please remember to notify the school office at (712) 276-4732 before 8:30 am if your student will be absent. Also, if your student is absent for an appointment, please remember to turn in documentation when your student returns. INCLEMENT WEATHER As we approach the winter months, we would like to remind everyone of the inclement weather protocol. If Sioux City Public Schools close or delay due to inclement weather, Siouxland Christian will also delay or cancel. If Sioux City Public Schools do not cancel or delay, due to the fact our families and staff come to Sioux City from many different directions, we utilize five schools (Sergeant Bluff, Lawton Bronson, Ponca, Dakota Valley, Hinton) to determine our course of action. If three of the five schools delay or cancel, we then do the same immediately. Please be sure your contact information is updated in JMC and your cell phone number is set to receive text messages. This will be our primary source for delay and cancelation notifications. Information is also available on KTIV Channel 4, KCAU Channel 9, and KMEG Channel 14, though such information can be significantly delayed. If you notice that three of the five schools mentioned above have delayed or cancelled, then Siouxland Christian will have delayed or cancelled too. Eagle Pride Weekly News– March 1, 2017 Page 4 MEETING CANCELLED As no applications were received for School Board consideration, the Parent Association Meeting scheduled for March 27 has been cancelled. There will be no election, as there are two men who submitted to fill two spots. Current board members, Mr. Ben Kooiker (father of Jaeley4th grade and Landon-Kindergarten) and Mr. Jay Layman (father of Jeremiah- 11th grade, Jake- 8th grade, Violet- 4th grade), will be renewed for 3 year terms. The next board election will be held in March of 2018. EAGLES GAMES & HIGHLIGHTS BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHT Losing is hard, but having the season come to an ultimate end is even worse. The Siouxland Christian boy's basketball team came up short last Thursday night as they fell to Western Valley Conference rival MVAO in their third match-up of the season by a final score of 36-49. The Eagles may have lost on the scoreboard, but they proved throughout the year that they are true winners on and off the court with their strong character and resiliency to be the best they can be in their young lives. The Eagles created history once again this season by winning their first ever Western Valley Conference regular season title, Conference tournament title, posting a 20-win season, earning the number one seed in the district, and being ranked top 10 in the state of Iowa. The Eagles exceeded all expectations both individually and collectively in helping create a culture for Siouxland Christian. We are extremely proud of you for the young men that you have become. You will always and forever be an Eagle!
