January 15, 2013, 6-7.15pm
Teleconference
Minutes
Present: Sylvia, Susan L., Susan W., May, Melanie, Anna
Regrets: Anthea, Rebecca, Kathy, Ben
1. Member update (Sylvia)

Michael DeKoven has accepted a Deputy Director position at the Port Moody
Public Library. Due to his new responsibilities he will need to step down from
the CE Committee. Committee members are sad to see this long-serving
member leave the committee. We wish him well and thank him for his support
on the committee.
2. ALPS update (Rebecca – via email)


ALPS held their annual December Meeting on December 14 th at Langara College.
The morning was spent hearing about various service reviews at local academic
institutions (SFU, UBC-O and UBC) and First-Year Integrated Instruction
Assessment at UBC, with the ALPS Business Meeting in the afternoon. In
addition to hosting, Langara also sponsored a live webcast of the morning
sessions for those unable to attend in person. Look for a more detailed review
of the day in the next issue of the BCLA Browser. The morning presentations will
also be available online via cIRcle, UBC's Digital Repository (https://circle.ubc.ca).
ALPS is planning a workshop around fostering innovative thinking/creativity in
the library for the Spring, as well as a pub night and an event at SLAIS. Stay
tuned for more details.
3. BCCATS update (May)


There is a waitlist of 41 people for the popular RDA workshops. These are being
repeated in the Lower Mainland. An invite was sent to the first 30 people on the
waitlist to sign up to a private website. The website will then be opened up to
general registrations if the 30 people do not respond. Interest in this workshop
continues to be generated.
BCCATS Chair & BCLA director will have a meeting – BCCATS hope to place
workshops before the BCLA conference.
4. YAACS update (Anna)


YAACS committee meeting is going to be held on 28 Jan.
A Communications Plan will be presented for committee approval. This is an indepth plan that defines our audience/members and our communication
methods to achieve our aims. YAACS intends to review the plan once BCLA’s
website is updated, the finalisation of a BCLA communications plan and/or yearly
depending on the timing of the previously mentioned events.
 YAACS is hosting a fully-booked ten week storytelling course with Anne Andersen
at the end of January through to April.
The course will provide:
o opportunities to explore and tell a variety of story types.
o resources for storytellers.
o selection and preparation of stories.
o building repertoire and confidence in the presentation of stories
o planning a storytelling event!
5. Federations update (Kathy – via email)
 North Coast – will hold a virtual workshop in March on Succession Planning. May
include the North East and if all goes well it may be something that can be
offered to the rest of the province.
 Joanne Richards and I are continuing work on the online HR
Management/Supervisory Skills series. We hope to offer the 1st 6 courses in the
Fall 2013 and the following 6 to be offered in Spring 2014.
 Joanne and I have not yet had a chance to talk about the Take It Virtual grant
program. I hope that I will have something to bring to the committee at the next
teleconference.
 Susan Laidlaw responded very quickly to the request to post upcoming EI
offerings on the Commons. Thank you Susan.
 Don’t forget about the Beyond Hope Conference in Prince George in June. I have
attached the call for proposals here.
6. Province update (Susan L.)
 Libraries
and
Literacy
launched
the
Commons
website
at
http://commons.bclibrary.ca, an online forum for the BC library community. We
“soft-launched” the site to public library directors, trustees and ILL staff on
November 29th and we are gradually spreading the word to others. Of particular
interest to the BCLA CE committee may be the Learn section where we have
listing of events and training opportunities offered by LLB, BCLA, Education
Institute,
etc.


We are also looking for volunteers who are interested in being part of the design
and implementation of a new provincial certification program. We’re about to
secure a project manager to guide the process, including the creation of terms of
reference for any steering or working committees. At this point by volunteering
to take part you are indicating only that you are interested in being involved in
discussions. Once we have terms of reference in place we’ll put out another call
for more formal commitment. Please let me know if you are interested in
informal participation in the early phases of this project. You can contact me at
[email protected]
7. RA Interest Group (Anthea – via email)
 We've applied to do a session at BCLA - awaiting approval. Tentative title is
" Marketing Outside the Box: Strategies from Marketing Experts on Promoting
Books and Reading"
 We will also organize an off-site social event during the conference.
 The next RA in a Half-Day workshop will be Wed. Oct. 30 at VPL.
 We now have a SLAIS liaison - she will recruit another student for continuity
when she graduates.

8. Workshop updates (Rebecca/Anna/May/Susan)
 CMHA:
o Contact has been made with a few local libraries and the CHMA to hold
this workshop mid-February. There was a question about whether or not
this session would generate enough interest in light of the Caring for the
Mind course currently being offered by the National Network of Libraries
of Medicine. After looking at the information, there is some overlap in
content, but I think the audiences are slightly different. The course is
much more in-depth, and designed as part of a continuing education
program whereby participants successfully completing the course will
receive 3 Medical Library Association continuing education contact hours
that can be applied to their Consumer Health Information Specialization.
BCLA usually has a drop deadline for registration, so we could cancel if
needed.
o Would be interested in hearing from others in the group about the
interest in this type of workshop (given the course mentioned above, and
that VPL and the Courthouse Libraries have had the CMHA workshop
already).
o Further discussion via email will be required to resolve minimum number
of attendees and the cost, as well as date confirmation.



The Disaster Recovery:
o Is going to be run by Guy Robertson – previously has presented at BCLA
Conference in 2009.
o It will be a ½ day workshop at Langara College and include a tour. The
maximum number of attendees is 25 and the cost will be approximately
$300.
o March/April were the proposed dates but discussion with the BCLA office
is required to approve these times since they are closer to the conference.
Possible options include running this as a conference event or to offer it
in June.
Ebook Reader:
o There will be no workshop in February as the speaker was unavailable.
o The session in Greater Vancouver will likely be offered in June, followed
by one in the North.
Open Date Hackathon
o Still waiting to hear back from possible presenters.
9. Education Institute (Melanie)
 There is now a new website
 The members’ fee is quite low and good value at $45.
 Courses include topics such as, Introduction To GeoSpatial Literacy.
10. Booking table at BCLA Conference (Sylvia)
 Last year there were a limited number of tables available for Committees at the
BCLA Conference. Sylvia contacted Allie at the BCLA Office and inquired if it will
be possible to book a table at the conference this year. Allie responded that she
will send on the request to the Conference Co-ordinator and mentioned that
whoever staffs the table need to be registered to attend the conference.
11. BCLA CE Chair (Sylvia)
 Sylvia’s first two-year term as Chair is up in April/May. The committee has asked
if Sylvia can continue for another two years and she will follow up with BCLA.
12. Next meeting: February - Sylvia will send out a Doodle survey.
