Giammona Retired Members: Gilberto E. De Anda Danny Fanning James Hom Nick Wester Here’s The Deal by Kenny Lukas Bernie Sanders no sooner announced his candidacy for President than the hits began. The New York Times ran an article stating that his plan to raise taxes on the wealthy would sink his candidacy. They ought to know because as the chief spokesman for our oligarchy, (government of the rich, by the rich, for the rich) they realize that nobody has won the Presidency without the abundant financial resources of these folks. The New York Times has been around long enough to have published news from the early 1900’s when the income gap between the wealthy class and the working class was as wide as it is now and that was a time of great change. The labor union movement began. Teddy Roosevelt (a very wealthy man) was preaching the gospel of economic fairness as well as workers’ rights and laws to protect working class Americans from the excessive power of the monopolistic industrialists. Bernie Sanders cited many examples that show our nation may well be headed back to the bad old days. We in the US have more wealth inequality than ever in our history, the highest rate of child poverty in any of the developed countries, 35 million people with no health insurance, a disappearing middle class, and a median income of $5,000. The wealth of the top one tenth of 1% is equal to the wealth of the bottom 99%. We now have an11% unemployment rate, but our leaders continue to push for more job killing trade deals. Bernie Sanders has proposed a few ideas that, at one time in our history, were law. To start with he wants to break up the big banks, “If they’re too big to fail, they’re too big”. These are the people that caused the economic crash and not a single one went to jail. Sanders also wants public funding of elections and to overturn the “Citizens United” decision that allows unlimited secret donations to campaigns. He wants to raise tax rates on the rich back to what they were in the 1950’s and raise the minimum wage to $15.00/hr., require pay equity for women, enact better overtime, sick pay, and paid vacation laws. He also wants to spend one trillion dollars to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. Sanders’ plans are what our nation needs to continue to be a world leader and even The New York Times should understand there is a limit to how much you can squeeze the working class.
