Our Community
Welcome To The New Year 2017
By Paul Voss
After the Christmas break, local business owner Bobby Hill brought a
book by the office for me to look through. He had found “ The Handbook of
Commerce Texas 1872-1985”, in a house he was tearing down and thought
the Chamber would like to look through it. I told him I would look at it and
immediately found some great treasures of information about our town.
Commerce has a great heritage and history and through the eyes and hands of
those who have recorded it have brought some of that history to light.
There is a swelling of confidence in our city that is moving through the business
community and the spirit of cooperation is growing. If you are not part of it,
come get on board. The new year has promise and by the growth so far this year,
2017 already has all the ear marks of a banner year.
Thank You to all the businesses and citizens that have made this a banner
year for the Chamber as well. We look forward to serving you and helping where
we can to promote Commerce and everything that is Commerce.
Of course the Chamber of Commerce is dear to my heart and news of past
Chamber activities is very interesting to me. It seems that in 1909, The publisher
of the Commerce Journal was Sterling Hart, who called a meeting of Commerce
businessmen to form a Board of Trade. The members called this organization
the Board of Trade until 1924 when they changed the name to the Chamber of
Commerce. One of the first things that they did was to erect two signs on either
side of the railroad tracks, near the Commerce train depot. The sign read:
“ Commerce, Hunt County, Texas. We have a population of 5000….
Abundant artesian water, water works, roundhouse, machine shops, five
railroad outlets, four banks, three divisions, two public school buildings, and
East Texas State Normal College with 600 students. We raise cotton, corn,
wheat, oats, alfalfa, sweet potatoes, peaches, blackberries, strawberries, and
plenty of timber. For more information, write Commerce Board of Trade.”
The founders of Commerce believed in advertising and promoting their town as
we do now. It is good to know that the spirit that once was is alive and well in
Commerce today.
To quote the book: The best way to summarize the activities of the
Chamber of Commerce, during its first seventy-five years, is to quote a resolution
adopted in the 1930’s:
“We believe that the greatest lesson we have learned……..is that we are
dependent on each other, and we must work together if we expect to go forward.”
The lesson’s that the founders of Commerce learned can be applied today
and should be. The slogan for the Chamber of Commerce today is “This is
Our Commerce” and the spirit of Commerce is alive and well going into 2017.

Commerce Area Alumni Annual Christmas Party
By Ann Julian
President Ray Keck and First Lady Patricia welcomed the Commerce Alumni Chapter into their home on Thursday , December 15. The traditional
annual Christmas party was a fantastic success. Dr. and Mrs. Keck are the ultimate hosts. Seventy members visited and socialized with friends. The
chapter has over a hundred members, but some were unable to attend due to other events on that date. There were so many stories to be shared.
Dr. Keck shared information about the house. All furnishings and memorabilia on the first floor belong to the house. There were stories about the
many artifacts, paintings and pictures on the walls. The chapter presented a blue and gold yard ornament to the couple to welcome them to our university.
In her presentation speech, Chapter president Ann Julian explained that a local alumnae had fashioned the blue and gold glass artifact from bits and
pieces of Commerce. She wanted to emphasize that the chapter was elated that the Kecks chose Commerce. The Commerce residents are also their ardent
fans.

10 Sure Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions
By Jane Collingwood
Another year is ending and many of us are gathering up our
willpower for a brand new set of New Year’s resolutions. But have we
learned from past experience? A large number, if not the majority, of
previous resolutions were probably broken in weeks, days, or even hours.
So, how to make this time round more successful? Well it’s not as
hard as you might think — there are some really easy ways to set yourself
on the path to success, and the first is:
1. Keep your resolutions simple.
Sometimes people find themselves aiming for an overhaul of their entire
lifestyle, and this is simply a recipe for disappointment and guilt. It may
be understandable at this time of year, when self-improvement is on your
mind, but experience shows these things can’t all be achieved at once. The
best approach is to focus clearly on one or two of your most important
goals.
2. Choose carefully.
But which to choose? Well, you might like to concentrate on those that
will have the greatest impact on your happiness, health and fulfilment. For
example, giving up smoking will obviously improve your health, but it will
also give you a sense of pride and will make you happy (but perhaps not
immediately!)
3. Be realistic.
Don’t aim too high and ignore reality – consider your previous experience
with resolutions. What led to failure then? It may be that you resolved to
lose too much weight or save an unrealistic amount of money. Remember,
there will always be more opportunities to start on the next phase, so set
realistic goals. Or if you don’t want to hold back, set clear short-term goals
on your way to a big achievement. Which leads to tip number four.
4. Create bite-sized portions.
Break goals down to manageable chunks. This is perhaps the most
essential ingredient for success, as the more planning you do now, the
more likely you are to get there in the end. The planning process is when
you build up that all-important willpower which you will undoubtedly
need to fall back on along the way. Set clear, realistic goals such as losing
5 pounds, saving $30 a month, or going for a run once a week. Decide
exactly how you will make this happen.
5. Plan a time-frame.
In fact, the time-frame is vital for motivation. It is your barometer for
success, the way you assess your short-term progress towards the ultimate
long-term goal. Buy a calendar or diary so you can plan your actions for
the coming weeks or months, and decide when and how often to evaluate.
6. Make notes.
Having made a note of your time-frame, you will have a physical reminder
of what you’re aiming for. Now go further and write down the details of
your resolutions in a notebook, remembering to add your motivations.
You could keep a scrapbook for this purpose, and fill it with photos of
your slimmer self, pictures of sporting or hobby equipment you are saving
for, or even a shocking credit card statement to spur you into action! If
your resolution will directly benefit your partner, children, colleagues or
friends then add their photos too – anything to remind you of your initial
motivation.
7. Treat yourself.
When making your plan, a vital feature should be the rewards and treats
you will give yourself at those all-important milestones. But be warned,
don’t fall into the trap of putting your goal in danger – it’s too easy for a
dieter to say “I’ve been so good, I deserve a few candy bars”, or a saver to
throw caution to the wind with a new purchase. One slip, and it could all
be over
8. Receive support.
It is at such times, when you’ve temporarily fallen off the wagon, that
your support network is crucial. Carefully choose those people around
you who have shown themselves to be trustworthy, supportive friends and
explain your plans. Let them know of ways they can help when the going
gets tough, and if they’re truly caring they’ll know the right things to say
during the hard times.
9. Don’t give up!
Do bear in mind that a slip-up is almost inevitable at some point, and you
must not let this become an excuse to give up. When it happens, you will
need to draw on your reserves of self-belief and strength, so build these
qualities as often as you can. Really feel proud of your past achievements
and don’t become critical of yourself. People with higher self-esteem
and confidence are in a much better position to succeed, so immediately
forgive yourself and say “I’m starting again now!”
10. Put yourself in charge.
These achievements are under your control – other people can advise and
support you but it’s your actions which need to change to see the results
you want. Having a strong sense of control over your life is necessary to
stick with your plans. Those who blame everyone and everything apart
from themselves will not have the resources needed to change. Yes, it’s
scary to take responsibility for your future, but surely it’s better than the
alternative?
Now you’ve read these tips, you are in a great position to consider the best
ways to improve your life this New Year. Your happiness is worth the time
and effort, so get started, and good luck!

Nursing Progr am Among Top 50 In The Nation
By Mary Grace Rodriguez
The Texas A&M University-Commerce Bachelor of Science in Nursing
program has been recognized as one of the top 50 residential nursing programs in
the nation by TopRNtoBSN.com. A&M-Commerce ranked #50 overall.
In calculating rankings, TopRNtoBSN began by considering accredited
schools that offer accelerated programs. It then determined the “net cost” of the
program and graduation rate as well as admission selectivity, as determined by
the U.S. Department of Education. Within its ranking, TopRNtoBSN “sought to
highlight programs that have good reputations, support students in their studies,
and provide a good economic value.” It found that students find all of these
benefits at A&M-Commerce.
“This is quite an honor for a BSN program that is less than four years old,”
stated Dr. Barbara Tucker, Chair of the Nursing Department. “The program is
fortunate to have experienced faculty who are all advanced practice nurses and
excellent administrative support.”
The nursing program began in 2013 and will find permanent residence
in a new facility slated to open in 2019. The facility itself will be equipped
with its own simulation hospital and state-of-the-art research laboratories. The
brainchild of late President Dan R. Jones, the new facility will house not only
the Department of Nursing but also the Department of Health and Human
Performance and the Biomedical Institute for Regenerative Medicine (BIRR).
Record Attendance of 30,000 Visit Children's Museum in 2016
There was great excitement at the Children's Museum on Wednesday,
December 21, as the Gooding family from Sulphur Springs brought the
yearly number of visitors to 30,000. Debbie had attended Brunch with Santa
and returned for a second visit at just the right time. Balloons and a yearly
membership were presented to Debbie as she entered the Children's Museum.
"Are you kidding? This is wonderful! My boys will love this!" she quickly
exclaimed.
"We want to thank all our visitors who have made this year such a success.
This is a tremendous milestone for the Children's Museum", said Sharline
Freeman, Executive Director. "Since the population of Commerce is 8,000, this
number reflects the support that the Children's Museum receives from throughout
northeast Texas. "
The Northeast Texas Children's Museum features open play, special events,
and school programs throughout the year. Coming soon in 2017 will be the
Children Health and Safety Fair on January 14; a book signing by author Kathleen
Hooten on January 28; the Daddy Daughter Dance on February 4; and Mother Son
Pirate Night on February 25. The Healthy Kids from A to Z pre-school program
will begin the eight-week class on January 11; the fifth grade Weird Science
program begins on February 9.
The Children's Museum opened in 2002. With a full schedule and variety
of events, 2017 promises to be another successful year at the Northeast Texas
Children's Museum. For more information, call the Children's Museum at
903-886-6055.
Debbie Gooding was welcomed as the Children's Museum visitor who brought
the total yearly attendance to 30,000 in 2016. She and her children were
given balloons and a year's membership to the Children's Museum.

Retired Teachers Holiday Luncheon
By Ann Julian
Sounds of Christmas made the December 12 Retired Holiday Luncheon at
the TAMUC Alumni Building a special festive event. The meeting was called
to order by President Bettina Zvanut. She welcomed twenty six members and
guests, updated the group on recent events, and said a blessing for the meal. Then
the group proceeded to the buffet line for a delicious lunch. The group ate and
socialized for a short time. Then came the joyful program presented by Drs. Bill
Ogden and Tom Bailey. They played traditional Christmas songs and carols and
encouraged the group to join in the singing. The renditions were fun and joyful.
The Twelve Days of Christmas was done in group participation. Needless to say, it
was a very creative project. Bill and Tom sang some original holiday melodies that
really brightened the spirits of all.
After the fun filled program. Bettina thanked the program chairmen and
all who helped today. She closed the meeting by reading A Cowboy’s Christmas
Prayer (author unknown). Here are the last few lines of the poem.
“We speak of “Merry Christmas” Lord—I reckon You’ll agree. There ain’t
no Christmas , Lord, for nobody that ain’t free.
So, one more thing I’ll ask You, Lord, Just help as You can To save seeds of
freedom for the future sons of man!
With that, President Bettina wished a Merry Christmas to all.
Attendees who enjoyed the program included Marty & Paula Massey,
Bettina & David Zvanut,Hoyle & Ann Julian,Dianna & Peter Weiss, Yvonne
Rollins,Kay & Clarence Jensen, Nancy & Bill Ogden,Tom Bailey, Jim & Toni

Pride Prep Academy
By Morgan Manning
Texas A&M University-Commerce and Commerce ISD are partnered for
an initiative to provide area high school freshmen with the opportunity to take up
to 36 hours of dual-credit classes, tuition free, through the Pride Prep Academy.
The 2016-2017 academic year is the initiate term for this project. Currently, of
the 14 students enrolled in U.S. History through Pride Prep, 12 are students from
Commerce High School. Parents from Lone Oak and Boles drive their children
to the 7:35 a.m. class three days a week and hurry them to their home campus 45
minutes later.
CHS teacher Matt Brewer is the instructor for the dual-credit class and
an esteemed alumnus from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He says the
expectations for the freshman are the same as for juniors and seniors taking those
dual-credit courses he teaches. “These students are some of our top students.
They took Algebra I in the eighth grade. They are ready for the rigor required.”
Rishi Nippani, a CHS student, said the class was challenging, but exciting.
Maggie Robinson said, “We use technology a lot in this class. We get our
assignments and we turn them in through our devices.” The students agreed that
more students would want to participate in the Pride Prep Academy as soon as
they could. Previous barriers, such as the inability to participate in both band
and the Pride Prep Academy, have been removed to make the program more
accessible to students.
Brewer said that he and his class represent the pilot program and they want
to set a good example so that this opportunity continues for even more students.
When asked if the students felt like trailblazers or guinea pigs, Nippani said he
felt like “a trailblazing guinea pig.”
Commerce Independent School District pays for the tuition of Commerce
High School students. Other districts may choose to pay for their students to
attend as well.
Texas A&M University-Commerce President Ray Keck visited the Pride
Prep Academy to meet with students earlier this month.
