The proposed English programmes of study
will embody higher standards of Literacy.
Pupils will be expected to develop a
stronger command of the written and
spoken word. Through the strengthening of
the teaching of phonics pupils will be
helped to read fluently.
What will the new English
curriculum look like?
There are certain elements that appear
in each year group:
Homophones - A homophone is a word that sounds like
another word, but has a different spelling and meaning.
Rare grapheme/phoneme correspondences.
prefixes and suffixes - Prefixes and suffixes are sets of letters
that are added to the beginning or end of another word.
Letter strings - a group of letters that appear in a word. For
example, these words: string straight strike strain. All
contain the letter string 'str'.
word endings (that are not suffixes)
Learning and remembering spellings
proof-reading
Before starting Year 3 children are
generally expected to have completed all
the Letters and Sounds phonics program.
There is an overview of this in your hand
outs.
Any children with gaps will be targeted
through interventions and small group
work.
Phonics
Word Reading - Yr 3 - 6
Apply their growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes (etymology and
morphology) as listed in English Appendix 1, both to read aloud and to understand
the meaning of new words they meet. (KPI)
Spelling - Year 3 & 4
Revision from Y1 and 2: pay attention to suffixes.
Use further prefixes and suffixes and understand how to add them (English
Appendix 1 (Year 3/4)).
Spell further homophones.
Spell words that are often misspelt (English Appendix 1 (Year 3/4)).
Place the possessive apostrophe accurately in words with regular plurals [for
example, girls', boys'] and in words with irregular plurals [for example, children's].
Use the first two or three letters of a word to check its spelling in a dictionary.
Write from memory simple sentences, dictated by the teacher, that include words
and punctuation taught so far.

Continue to distinguish between homophones and other words which are often confused.
Use knowledge of morphology and etymology in spelling and understand that the spelling of
some words needs to be learnt specifically, as listed in English Appendix 1 (Years 6).
Use dictionaries to check the spelling and meaning of words.
Use the first three or four letters of a word to check spelling, meaning or both of these in a
dictionary.
Use a thesaurus.
