What is health insurance?
 Private companies that help cover the cost of health care
and medical procedures
 In 2010, Affordable Care Act (“Obama Care”) = everyone
must have health insurance.
 HIPAA – keeps your medical information private
Why
?
Why do I need health insurance while I am studying in the United States?
- The U.S. government does not pay for medical treatment
- Medical treatment and care is VERY expensive here
- Illness and injury are unpredictable- if you have an accident or get sick, you will
need health insurance to help cover the cost of treatment
- This video offers a good overview of health care in the United States:

Cultural Insurance Services
International (CISI)
 JMU requires that all international students on a F-1 or J-1 visa have
health insurance coverage during their time as a student here.
 The ISSS office offers health insurance through Cultural Insurance
Services International (CISI)
 All international students are automatically enrolled in the CISI policy,
and the insurance fee is added to your tuition bill each semester
 You should receive an email from [email protected]
with your insurance card. Check your JUNK or SPAM folder if you
do not see it in your inbox.
 You can print your card and carry this in your wallet
What To Do If You Get Sick?
Should I go to the EMERGENCY ROOM at the hospital?
The Emergency Room is for very serious situations ONLY. Do not go if you have a
cough, light fever, or mild pain. First go to the Health Center on campus, or an
urgent care center in Harrisonburg. If you go to the ER when it is not an emergency,
the CISI health insurance will not cover your visit and it can cost $500.
JMU Health Center
JMU Health Center is free. If you have a cold, the flu, you have a minor accident, an infection
or you just don’t know what is wrong, make an appointment at the Center. Do not run to the
