Tequila, the spirit of Mexico, has arrived
The town of Tequila is located 50 km northeast of Guadalajara and has a population of 25,000.
The name means “Volcano” in the Nahuatl Indian (Aztec) language, but these natives
vanished by 1695, when the Spanish settlement was permanently established.
Tequila town sits on the lower slopes of Sierra Madre Mountains
near an extinct volcano.
What Is Tequila ?
The liquid produced from the fermented juices of the maguey or agave plants is called mezcal.
What, then, is tequila? Tequila is the specific type of mezcal distilled from
the unique blue agave plants in the area named Tequila, in the state of Jalisco.
From this place the tequila now sold around the world receives its name.
Tequila is an 80 proof liquor, 40 % alcohol by volume. It is made only in Mexico.
It is double distilled from the sugary juices extracted from the cooked pina, or heart of the
blue Agave plant (botanically named Agave tequilana Weber azul, blue variety).
This name originated from a German botanist, Franz Weber who registered the name in 1902 -03.
Although there are 360 varieties of agave, the blue agave is the only one
from which tequila can be made. The word “agave” is taken from
Greek and literally means “Admirable”, “Noble”.

In Mexico tequila has been around for 250 years, but now in the 21st century,
it finally catches the world’s attention. Millions of people, from rustic peasants to
powerful business leaders, have managed to convince the world
that tequila has never had a pact with the devil and that it is, on the contrary,

Who invented the Margarita? There's quite a few stories floating
around. However, such a great cocktail requires a legendary origin, though
there are in fact several contenders all claiming to have invented the Margarita.
It may date from 1936, when Danny Negrete, the manager of the Crespo
Hotel in Pueblo, Mexico created a drink for his girlfriend, Margarita:
She habitually took a dab of salt with whatever she had to drink. Danny
decided that he would create a drink for her so she could enjoy it without
having to reach into the common table salt-bowl; he would put salt on the rim
of her glass. He chose Tequila, Margarita's favorite drink. Then he added
Cointreau and lemon juice and shake it up with ice.

Another story!
Margarita’s invention in 1942 is attributed to a bartender Francisco "Pancho"
Morales who passed away in 1997 at the great old age of 78 years.
Senor Morales worked at Tommy's Bar, Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua in 1942
when a woman came in and named a cocktail called Magnolia, which he had never
heard of before. Like any good bartender he winged it and created a cocktail
out of crushed ice, Cointreau, lime juice and Tequila. The women loved it
knowing it was not what she wanted and asked him what the cocktail was
called, and the rest was history. Senor Morales’ train of thought had gone to
flowers, from magnolia to daisy, which translates in Spanish to... Margarita!
The History & Culture of Wine & Tequila
Spanish Colonialism Dawns
The Conquistadors (Spanish Settlers) landed in the Jalisco & Tequila area of
Mexico in the year 1519 -1521. After defeating the Aztec Indians & started to
colonize Mexico they also started to ship wine & brandy from Spain to satisfy
their thirst. They planted vines but were not able to keep up with demand, so
they turned their attention to what the locals were drinking Pulque. However
it was rather weak & the Spanish dismissed the drink as unpalatable.
The only solution was to fortify the Pulque by distilling it. This was unknown to the Aztecs;
the Spanish learnt the process from the Moors in the 8th Century.
The Spanish initially referred to this spirit as vino de (mezcal),
being the Spanish term for Agave.
As the Blue Agave plant was native to Jalisco and the local Indians had
founded the town of Tequila the local spirit flourished until the Spanish
decided it was becoming too popular & decided to instate prohibition to
protect Spanish wine and alcohol products. Needless to say the locals ignored the Spanish
wine & continued to drink Tequila. Taxes were imposed in 1540's
on tequila to make sure everyone would buy wine & brandy.
This also failed and Tequila reined supreme.
Philip II of Spain in 1595 ordered no new vines or planting of grapevines in
Mexico or even the replanting of existing vines was prohibited.
