Timeless Wisdom Proverbs 14:1-35 Lesson 18 Remember to pray for understanding before reading Chapter 14. 1. What are some of the actions a wise woman uses to build a solid home for her loved ones? You can use Proverbs 31:10-31 for some examples, what does that look like in your day to day activities? How does a foolish woman pull her house down with her own hands? See Proverbs 9:13 & 21:19. Can you think of other ways she destroys her family? 2. Verses 2-9 contain advice for what to do or not do. List some of the do’s and don’ts you see. What do you think verse 4 means? 3. Read verse 10. Now read Mark 14:33,34 and Philippians 4:7. What are your thoughts on these verses? 4. In verse 11a the meaning is obvious, Matthew 7:26,27; but why are the ‘upright’ dwelling in a tent? 5. Explain verse 12. See Matthew 7:13,14. Do you agree that verse 13 contains a warning to those who choose to follow what “seems right” to them? Why or why not? See also Ecclesiastes 11:9. “Wise and simple are relative terms, referring not so much to mental condition as to the fear of the Lord on the one hand, and indifferent self-sufficiency on the other.” H. A. Ironside 6. Verses 14-19 illustrate this point. We have studied these contrasts in previous chapters, it would serve us well to pay close attention to things that are repeated so often in Scripture! Choose 3 proverbs from this group and explain the meaning of them. 7. The Bible has much to say about the poor and how they should be treated. Verses 20,21 & 31 remind us to consider the poor. Read Isaiah 58:7-12; James 2:5,6 & 14-16. List some practical ways we can serve the poor. 8. Verse 28 is interesting. The closest we come to a king with our form of government would be the president. What do you think is meant by this proverb? Check Proverbs 30:29-31. 9. Choose 6 proverbs from the remaining verses to either give the meaning of, or an example to illustrate it. Take your 6 proverbs from: 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30, 32, 33, 34, & 35. “The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.” Psalm 34:7-10
