Land Ordinance of 1785
-Set up a system to survey and settle land. The law
called for the territory to be surveyed and then
divided into townships. Each township had 36, one
square mile sections with 640 acres. Congress could
sell sections to settlers for $640 each.

Northwest Ordinance of 1787
2.) _________________________________
-Considered to be one of the few achievements of Congress
under the Articles of Confederation, the Northwest
Ordinance of 1787 put the world on notice that the land
north of the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi would be
settled and would eventually become part of the United
States. Until then this area had been forbidden to settle on.
