ECOLE CEDARDALE IS AN IB WORLD SCHOOL!
We are thrilled to report that the International Baccalaureate Organization has granted Ecole
Cedardale full accreditation as an IB World School – the first French Immersion IB school in
BC! The authorization visit took place in April and we were not anticipating having the
decision until mid-July at the earliest. It is wonderful to have received such great news so
quickly. We want to thank our parent group for their support as we embarked on this path
several years ago, and our incredible staff for their enthusiastic implementation of the IB
principles in their classrooms. Special thanks to our IB co-ordinator, Mme Kirsten Dixon and our Principal
Mme LaBounty for their dedicated leadership throughout the process.
CEDARDALE STUDENTS HELP OTHERS
Once again this year, our Cedardale students have demonstrated their ongoing commitment to
assisting others less fortunate than themselves. We are very proud to tell you that the students
raised over $4400 this year for a variety of charitable causes, including the Terry Fox Foundation (total
excludes on-line donations), UNICEF, Cops for Cancer, the Canadian Red Cross for Fort McMurray fire
relief, PJ’s with a Purpose and Free the Children. Money was raised through sales of baked goods, popcorn,
valentines, used books, vegetables, plants and lemonade; a talent show; and cash donations. As well, using
their donated excess Hallowe’en candy, students made hundreds of Christmas crackers that were given to
an inner city school. Thank you to all staff and parents for their assistance in helping our students help
others. Special mention goes to the Grade 7 class and to the Free the Children Club who showed
tremendous social responsibility in their leadership of most of these events.
FAREWELL - AU REVOIR
As you know, Mme Christiane Boulet, Cedardale Librarian since the school opened in 2004 has
decided to retire. We want to wish her well as she begins this new chapter of her life. Thank you,
Mme Boulet for all that you have done for our Cedardale students over the years. You will not be
forgotten.
We also want to bid au revoir to Mme Sarah Fee, Grade 5 teacher who will be leaving the West Vancouver
School District for a year to teach in Hong Kong. Best of luck, Mme Fee on this exciting adventure.
Mme Brigitte is embarking on an adventure of another kind. She will be beginning a year-long maternity
leave in September as she prepares to welcome a new son to her family. Mme Brigitte, we wish you joy
and happiness with your growing family.
LIBRARY MATERIALS OVERDUE!
All Library materials were due June 10, 2016. If you did not receive your child’s report card, it may be
because they have outstanding materials. Reports will be held until all items have been returned or fees
have been paid.
ELEMENTARY BAND REGISTRATION FOR 2016-17
If you are interested in having your child participate in the Grade 6-7 Elementary Band program in
September, please sign up as soon as possible to ensure the necessary staffing is in place for the band.
Students in Grades 6 and 7 as of September 2016 are eligible to participate. For more information and for
the link to the registration form, please check the School District 45 website and click on the link
for Elementary Band Registration. Please remember that current Grade 6 band members wishing to
continue next year must enrol again. Band will be taught by Mme Davenport next year.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES DONATIONS
The school's "Free the Children" club is teaming up with Sentinel students to collect school supplies. Please
donate new or gently used pencils, erasers and pencil sharpeners. Boxes for your donations will be placed
in the library and near the office during the last 2 weeks of school. Thank you in advance for your generous
donations!
SCHOOL OPENS TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH – GRADES 1-7
th
School opens on Tuesday September 6 for Grades 1 to 7 students. Students will attend for one hour from
9:00-10:00. During this time, parents are invited to a coffee hour in the gym sponsored by the Parent
th
Advisory Council. Kindergarten students will begin on Wednesday September 7 with a gradual entry
program. Details will be sent to kindergarten families shortly. If your child will not be in attendance when
th
school opens, it is very important that Mme Vaartnou is informed before September 6 as class placement,
th
school configuration, and ensuring your child’s space is held relies on attendance on September 6 . Look
for an email update prior to start-up.
SUMMER LEARNING UPDATE
Online Summer Learning Registration is now closed. In person registration will be available June 30 from
3:00 - 6:00 pm at WVSS in Room C303 and July 4 10:00 am - 1:00 pm at WVSS in Room C303.
Currently all primary classes are full with wait lists. There are a few spaces left in Advanced Writing Grades
4-7, Get Ready for Math - Grade 4, Grade 6 and Grade 7. There is lots of space in Reading Comprehension
Grades 5-7 and Enriched French Immersion Grades 4-7. Please visit the Summer Learning website for
course descriptions and registration: http://www.westvancouverschools.ca/summer-learning/.
Summer learning registration requires your child’s Personal Education Number (PEN). If you do not have
the PEN already, you may obtain it from the school office. Please note that the Ministry of Education does
not allow the distribution of PEN numbers via telephone or email. You may obtain the number by dropping
by the school office or by requesting via email to Mme Vaartnou that the PEN be sent home with your child.
ROOTS OF EMPATHY INSTRUCTORS NEEDED
Roots of Empathy is Canada’s preeminent bullying prevention program for students in Kindergarten to
Grade 8, with 15 years of research providing evidence of its efficacy in reducing aggression, including
bullying, and increasing prosocial behaviour. Roots of Empathy programs are considered to be a model of
innovation in education reaching 700,000 school children from Kindergarten through elementary school in
every province in Canada and in ten countries on three continents.
At the heart of the program are a community infant and parent who visit the classroom nine times over
the school year. A trained Roots of Empathy instructor coaches students to observe the baby’s
development and to label the baby’s feelings. In this experiential learning, the baby is the “Teacher” and a
lever that the Instructor uses to help children identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of
others.
If you are interested in becoming a Roots of Empathy instructor, and would like additional information,
please refer to the Roots of Empathy notice in Publications or contact Rachel Trask at [email protected].
The Roots of Empathy website also offers a comprehensive overview of the organization at
