THE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST Neillsville, Wisconsin Church 715-743-2147 Pastor Jacoba Koppert Pastor’s Office 715-743-2117 www.neillsvilleucc.org May 2017 Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Jacoba’s jottings… It is early on Easter morning. I write two weeks before you will receive this newsletter. Who knows what will take place in the world in the next two weeks. Only God knows what will take place in our lives, our families, our community, and the church in the next two weeks. The last two have been quite eventful. A fund raiser spaghetti dinner, for Krue and his family, a check and cards delivered to their home in Hatfield. We have traveled to Jerusalem during Lenten worship services, we have waved the Palms, graphically heard about the crucifixion of Jesus. Baseball and softball have begun, basketball tournaments played, a turkey killed by a proud youth, surgeries taken place, family and friends have died. Syrian civilians gassed to death, bombs falling, terrorists killing folks around the world, farmers receiving letters. Wow! Today we celebrate Christ’s Resurrection, families traveling, a baby will be baptized today, there has been rain and more rain and a little bit of spring time warmth, the birds have returned., I have been packing and asking my Mom to prepare our meals as I prepared for Holy Week and Easter. Yes, much has happened in two weeks and this is only a short list that comes to mind. What I do know is that because God raised Christ from the dead, all these things that took place brought new life among us. That which touched our lives in the last two weeks changed us – maybe we cried because of deaths near or far; maybe we celebrated a home running hit or shooting a turkey giving us greater confidence; maybe we finally understood who the Holy Spirit is or what the resurrection means gaining faith and peace; maybe a broken heart was reconciled or peace overcame us as we realized how we loved the one who had died. Krue is taking steps into the future wearing his new brace. In at least some places we have renewed hope, faith is stronger and love has been stirred. I wonder what the next two weeks will bring. However, I know that because Jesus Christ lives, we will again experience new lives; Because Jesus Christ lives we proceed in faith, knowing that which seemed to be the end of life was actually the beginning of changed lives. I have hope – for us – for our church –for our country and the world because the risen Christ is among us. When fear overwhelms, when the end seems imminent open your eyes so you might recognize the risen Christ in our midst. Look for new life, new opportunities in your world and in your life. Christ guarantees it, you will find them. Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened for you. Prayer: Holy One, raise us to new life; open our eyes and hearts to the resurrection in our lives; – fill will us with joy; give us courage to move forward trusting that you will lead us. Encourage us to serve you in all the places we are so others too will have the hope we have through the Risen Christ. Amen. 1 PASTOR JACOBA’S 2nd PAGE weekend, so we will receive members in the next couple of months. Quickly the Committee pulled together a Benefit Spaghetti Dinner for Krue and his parents. Betty Opelt, Mike Perkl, Kathy Mathis and Doris Bakker organized the dinner and helpers. There were many, many helpers from putting up posters, getting advertisement and mention in the Clark County Press, setting up tables, purchasing ingredients, cooking the good, serving the dinner, washing dishes, drawing pictures/cards for Krue, getting cash for change and taking money. Lots of folks involved! Thank you one and all! (The card pictured is from Sam!) The month of May will be busy – with a baptism, May 7, Confirmation May 14, Volunteer of the Year Honored, Graduates honored (let me know of who is graduating from the church) May 21, and Memorial Day Sunday possibly combined with Mental Health Sunday remembering military members and others with PTSD. Well this about all I have time to write before leaving on a jet plane. I will see you when I get back. With Thanks from Kellie, Neil, Karsen & Krue: UCC – Thank you to each and every one of you that helped in some way with the benefit held for Krue. We were shocked at the generous amount of money raised and we are so appreciative for everyone’s hard work and effort. – and prayers. Thank you, Kellie, Neil, Karsen and Krue Lots of beautiful music during Lent and Holy Week including Palm Sunday and Easter. I want to thank the Choir, Joe and Karen and Eileen for all their extra efforts. I also want to thank Pastor Jim Mohr for reading scripture as I preached a sermon on Judas, Peter and the Centurion on Palm Sunday. Pastor Mohr was among the six men who read on Maundy Thursday – Don Abel, Wayne Voss, Mike Perkl, Craig Sigurdson and Ray Weyer My mother helped with decorating the church for Easter and I want to thank her for helping me for arranging the Lilies and changing the paraments. We were going to receive new members on Palm Sunday, but one of the members became ill that 2 Newsletter 2017 Hi Everyone, It’s a beautiful Tuesday, April 25 spring morning. This morning, around 6:30 a.m. when I went over to Pastor Jacoba’s to feed her cats Ish and Josiah and give them some love and attention I decided after I got done to take a little ride around town. I love this time of year. The green leaves are just coming out on the trees and the many yards are filled with beautiful daffodils (if you want to see daffodils take a ride pass Doris Bakker’s) she has a yard full of beautiful daffodils and it looks like her tulips are just about to bud. It’s worth a look. I would have loved to spend the whole day riding around the country – but we must get to the May Newsletter. I hope you all had a great Easter. We had family and lots of good food at our house. It was a good day. Nursery Note: Our nursery does not have scheduled volunteers, but it is open to anyone who wishes to use it. Our only requirement is that an adult/parent must be with your child(ren) If the nursery is used, please be sure the toys/etc. are put away. Thank you for your help. He has a brace on his leg, making it a little hard to get around but is back in his school in Chippewa Falls. The Spaghetti Dinner that the church sponsored last month netted a gift of $2000.00 to help out Krue and family with added expenses. We are happy to hear of his progress and look forward to seeing him again! Let’s keep Krue and his family in our prayers. Are you interested in giving to your church by “Automatic Giving?” If you are – stop by the church office and we will get you set up. We have quite a few people that give this way. It is a good way to keep up your “faith promise.” Check it out. Radio Broadcast Sponsors As of today, we have one member that we know of in the hospital. Joyce Johnson is at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. The last report we have on her is that she will be moved to a rehab nursing home where she will be recuperating. She had some blood clots that needed to be taken care of. She is doing much better. We were sorry to hear that Pat Wall fell and broke her hip. Mission Committee: Cheryl Steinbach, Sue Gurney, Deb Perkl, Carole Romens, Tim Voigt, Kathy Mathis Stewardship Committee News Strengthen the Church – will be the next UCC special offering. It will run from May 15 through June 4. Strengthen the Church is a special mission offering to reimagine and build the future of the UCC. Strengthen the Church largely supports youth ministries and full-time leaders for new churches in parts of the country where the UCC voice has not been heard. As God calls our congregations to be the church in new ways, your generosity will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches and develop the spiritual life in our youth and young adults. Watch for envelopes in the pews and more information in the bulletin – we thank you in advance for supporting this worthy mission. Mission & Outreach News Mission Projects Transitions is a treatment center for girls who have been trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation or are at high risk for trafficking. This new treatment center is here in Neillsville. Here are some ways you can help. They are looking for items such as craft kits, journals, sketchbooks, markers, drawing or colored pencils, yarn, knitting and crocheting equipment and scrap-booking supplies. They are also looking for volunteers to 6 VOLUNTEER SUNDAY Mark your calendars! Volunteer Sunday will be May 21! The Stewardship Committee will be recognizing ALL members who give of their time and talent for the benefit of our church. We will also be honoring two very special “Outstanding Volunteers” this year during worship time. Following the worship service the Stewardship Committee will be serving refreshments downstairs in Fellowship Hall during the coffee fellowship time. We hope you can join us for this special event! The Lamplight Concert – The Neillsville United Church of Christ is sponsoring the Lamplight Concert to benefit the House of Mercy located in Loyal Wisconsin. It will take place at the Clark Cultural Art Center, Saturday, May 13 at 2:00 p.m. Kate Jennings, vocal, and Judith Perman, piano, will be the featured performers. A free-will offering will be taken, and refreshments will be served. The House of Mercy was brought into existence by a coalition of religious communities, businesses, and private individuals in Clark County with the professional support of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of La Crosse. Catholic Charities has hired a part-time house coordinator/case worker who works with the residents at the House of Mercy, offering them financial education and assistance with the goal of achieving sustainable living independence. Judy Morrow, who has a long history of helping those in need, is the coordinator. The House of Mercy is a program that embraces and recognizes that all people have the basic human right to safe, affordable housing. Studies have shown that until families have their basic needs for food and shelter met, they do not have the emotional resources to address the other issues in their lives. There is a waiting list of families who seek such assistance in Clark County. The House of Mercy facility allows families to fully experience the joy and comfort of having a home, thus allowing them to focus on other barriers to their success in life. It is located at 141 N. Main St. in Loyal, Wisconsin. On June 30, 2016, with the generous financial support of businesses and individuals throughout Clark County, Catholic Charities purchased a building with three lovely apartments. With future funding the hope is that the building will also house an office and three emergency housing rooms. The House of Mercy will bring to its residents all of the professional services of Catholic Charities and collaborating Clark County social services, the support of church volunteers, and the assistance of people of goodwill. Each family will be accessed and an individualized growth plan developed. Once a family has the skills and resources to live independently, they will be assisted in finding permanent housing and may continue to participate in case management. Now, the House of Mercy is full. It is supplying a home to three families with children. In the last two months eight additional families have approached coordinator Judy Morrow, seeking a place to live. They did not enter the House of Mercy either because they did not fit the criteria or they did not want or were unable to live by the rules of the house. But all were helped with rent or finding another place to live. Many others have come for furniture, food, gas or rent assistance. The need is great. Please put Saturday, May 13 at 2:00 p.m. on your calendar, to help this worthy cause. See you at the Clark Cultural Art Center, 201 East 4th Street. Neillsville. 7 (Second Half continued) much as they reported. It is good that we have programs like this to educate us. Spring Cleaning At Our Church It was decided that we need to do some “spring cleaning” here at our church. Jim needs our help. On Wednesday, May 17 beginning at 5:00 p.m. (you can come any time after 5 p.m. that fits your schedule) Jim will have supplies/cleaning materials for us to use. Here is a list of some of the things that can be done. Wiping down the pews, windows (inside and out) Glass on all the doors, any of the woodwork, choir chairs, fellowship hall chairs, balcony rail and pews, lower kitchen cupboards and furniture/cupboards in the lounge. Around 6 p.m. we will serve a light supper. There will be a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. As we found out there are many things that are needed at Transitions. We listed some of things in the Mission and Outreach article. If you are interested in helping or have any questions you can call Amanda at 715-819-6748. Our Second Half group will not meet in May. We will meet again in the fall.
