Butendiek offshore wind farm.
Wind energy from the North Sea.
The North Sea offshore wind farm Butendiek comprises 80 turbines, resulting in a total capacity of
288 megawatts (MW) and supplies approximately 370,000 households with renewable energy. ewz
(Zurich Municipal Electric Utility) holds through ewz (Deutschland) GmbH 4.9 percent of the shares.
The Butendiek wind farm is located in the German North Sea
around 32 kilometers off the island of Sylt and approximately
53 kilometers from the mainland. It covers an area of 33 km2
and comprises 80 turbines of the type Siemens SWT-3.6-120
with each 3.6 MW, resulting in a total capacity 288 MW. Developer, builder and responsible for the operational maintenance
is wpd AG, which is a leader in the field. In February 2015, already eleven months after start of construction in spring 2014,
the first wind turbine fed electricity into the public grid. In August 2015 the so far fastest established offshore wind farm was
completed. The share of ewz in the annual power production
is approximately 62 gigawatt hours (GWh) and corresponds to
the average consumption of around 23,000 households in the
city of Zurich, based on a requirement of 2700 kilowatt hours
(kWh) per household.
OWP Butendiek GmbH & Co. KG.
ewz acquired 49 percent of wpd Butendiek Beteiligungs GmbH
through its subsidiary ewz (Deutschland) GmbH. wpd Butendiek
Beteiligungs GmbH itself has a 10 percent stake in OWP
Butendiek GmbH & Co. KG. Hence, ewz holds 4.9 percent of
the shares of OWP Butendiek GmbH & Co. KG. Besides wpd
Butendiek Beteiligungs GmbH, the following companies have
invested with 22.5 percent each in the company: Pensionskassernes Administration (PKA), Siemens Financial Services
and Industriens Pension (IP). Marguerite Fund holds a 15 percent, CDC Infrastructure a 7.5 percent indirect interest in the in

Strategy of ewz.
ewz and its owner – the city of Zurich – pursue the scenario of major expansion of new renewable energies, in particular wind and solar energy. Its acquisition will mainly take
part in foreign countries. Until 2020 ewz will increase its
annual production of new renewable energies of 1200 GWh.
This corresponds to around 40 percent of the electricity
consumed in the city of Zurich today. The goal of ewz is to
expand its wind energy portfolio up to an annual production of 2300 GWh by 2050.
