The movie, as it would suggest, is a new and updated version of the story of the Exodus from Egypt. And though there were several instances where the movie’s narrative does not match that of the Torah’s it was entertaining and perhaps even more thought provoking than DeMille’s “The 10 Commandments.” “The 10 Commandments” follows the biblical narrative in a more straightforward way, but for me, sometimes the differences and the deviations from the storyline prompt me to think about things in a more nuanced way as I wonder how these decisions were made. As I began to think about the movie, I realized that the creators of “Exodus: Gods and Kings” had to take some artistic license in depicting Moses’s early life because we are given such meager details in the Torah. And so, as I watched a new interpretation of Moses’s life (a modern-day midrash, if you will), I began to think about the sheer number of values and ethical teachings that Jewish tradition pulls from this seminal story. “Avadim Hayinu” we were once slaves in the land of Egypt. This often quoted catchphrase reminds us that we, the Jewish people, have a heritage that we call upon to direct our future. We remember this fact in our sacred texts, in our liturgy, in our commentaries, in our Jewish rituals. Our choices, our rights, and our freedoms were taken from us; our dignity as human beings stripped bare. And these collective memories are the stories that guide us, that help us make decisions today and every day. Because we were slaves in the land of Egypt, we know what it is like to be oppressed for simply being ourselves. Because we were slaves in the land of Egypt, we know what it is like to be vulnerable and afraid. Because we were slaves in the land of Egypt, we know what it is like to be the stranger in an unknown land. Because we were slaves in the land of Egypt, we know what is like to be persecuted and profiled. Because we were slaves in the land of Egypt, we know what it is like to live in poverty with our food and shelter subject to the whim of others. And because we know this, we are obligated to act to help those who are still held captive in the bonds of slavery. So we work to help those who would seek shelter and refuge in America. We work to decrease poverty and increase economic justice. We work to end racial profiling and discrimination. We work to make our communities a place where all people feel welcomed and accepted. These are the issues that have plagued us in ancient times, in the recent past, and still in the present—our work is far from finished. As we begin the book of Exodus, we are also given the opportunity to celebrate and honor the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in promoting civil liberties and rights for all people. This year, CRC will join together with Christ the King United Church of Christ, led by Rev. Traci Blackmon, for our annual Martin Luther King Birthday Celebration. During that time we will have the opportunity to pray together, to reflect, to share, and to continued on page 2 2 Mazel Tov qq Leo Singer on his bar mitzvah qq Mason Sharon on her bat mitzvah qq Benjamin Guller on his bar mitzvah qq Eli Harris on his bar mitzvah qq Rafael Brent on his bar mitzvah qq Bob Millstone on being named JCRC Board President, effective June 2015 Sincere Condolences crc news Joint Venture MLK Service and Birthday Celebration Wednesday, January 14, 7:00 pm at CRC For over 21 years, one of CRC’s premier events has been our annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration held in conjunction with Cote Brilliant the week before the MLK National Holiday. This year, the Joint Venture voted to extend our programs and dialogue out into the greater St. Louis region and pair with Christ The King United Church Of Christ in Florissant. Their pastor is Reverend Traci Blackmon who, along with Rabbi Susan and Rabbi Randy, has been extensively involved in building community understanding and action around the issues which Ferguson has made very visible. Reverend Blackmon is serving as a member of the Ferguson Commission appointed by Missouri Governor Nixon. This will be a moving and important gathering in our St. Louis region so we encourage your attending along with your family and friends. We hope to see you all here at CRC for this inspiring night of celebration and beautiful music on January 14, 2015 at 7:00 pm. The story of Exodus reminds us that the shackles of slavery never truly leave us. We retain a visceral connection to our past which prompts us to act on behalf of those who are still enslaved. And we know, deep in our hearts that until all people are free, these bonds will never truly be broken. As we begin this new year together, and begin our reading of the book of Exodus, may we dive deep into the text together. May we learn together, study together, and act together to fight injustice, in all of its many forms. May this time of study help us to think of different ways to interpret the narratives and lead us to new ways to solve the problems of the present. And may our history, our traditions, and our narratives help us to remember our past and bring peace into our future. B’Ahavah (With Love), Rabbi Deana legislative session preview 3 Missouri Legislative Session Preview - What Can we Look Forward to in 2015? The 2015 Missouri Legislative session kicks off on Wednesday, January 7. There are several issues that were identified as priorities by our 2014 Tikkun Olam survey that will also be tackled by our legislators in Jefferson City. Since CRC encourages its members to take an active role in advocating for important social justice issues that reflect our mission and core values of Tikkun Olam, the repair of the world, we wanted to give you a preview of what to expect over the next few months. Medicaid Expansion - It is hard to believe, but we are once again having to fight for Medicaid expansion in 2015. Eligibility for Medicaid is so low in Missouri that there are hundreds of thousands of people who don’t qualify. They are in the Coverage Gap—too rich for Medicaid, but too poor for the Marketplace—with no way to get affordable insurance. Expanding Medicaid will help nearly 300,000 uninsured Missourians gain access to healthcare and save 700 lives every year. Expansion will also create jobs and bring Missouri taxpayer money BACK to Missouri. Failing to fully expand Medicaid will cause some hospitals and clinics to curtail services, and some will close. The entire state will be affected. As aforementioned, some Missourians will lose their lives, and we will damage our public health and medical care systems. Please see page 5 for more information about lobby days and actions. LGBT Issues - Even though Missouri now, more or less, has marriage equality, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people can still be fired from their jobs, evicted from their homes, and denied access to public accommodations and services. Our coalition partners, such as PROMO, are working with businesses to pass the Missouri Nondiscrimination Act (MONA), which would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the workplace. MONA would simply extend the existing Missouri Human Rights Statute to include LGBT people. Workplace protections are good for Missouri because it places the focus on merit and performance and encourages diversity and inclusion. Reproductive Justice - As usual, several restrictive bills have already been pre-filed but our coalition partners do not have a strong sense of which ones will really gain traction this session. Some potential challenges include unnecessary health inspections on abortion providers, undue benefits for “crisis pregnancy centers,” and coercion bills aimed at a problem that doesn’t actually exist. Their legislative priorities will focus on fighting new restrictions to abortion and family planning in a way that reduces negative impact on Missourians and helping to cultivate a youth-led movement advocating for comprehensive sex education and beyond. Gun Violence Prevention - Nearly 100 school shootings have occurred in the two years since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. This shows that despite the outcry that followed, the threat of gun violence in schools is very much alive. Yet the Missouri legislature continues to do nothing except make guns easier to access. We will work hard this session on trying to improve this situation. CRC member and State Representative Stacey Newman plans to file another bill calling for universal background checks (her third in as many years), and at the end of January she and another state representative in Kansas will jointly file “gun restraining order” bills, that would allow law enforcement and family members to obtain temporary or permanent restraining orders that would prevent individuals who are known to be dangerous from accessing guns. Please keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to join CRC on lobby and action days in Jefferson City. If you have any questions, ideas, or concerns, please contact Jennifer Bernstein at (314) 361-1564, ext. 117 or [email protected]. 4 January University Series with Rabbi Randy - Abraham Joshua Heschel and Martin Luther King, Jr.: Common Threads Tuesdays in January, 7:00 pm This month includes Rabbi Heschel and Reverend King’s birthdays as well as the National MLK Day. Our Tuesday evening study in January will center around these inspiring religious and Civil Rights leaders, helping to contextualize the new movement for racial justice begun right here in Missouri with a new generation of diverse and committed clergy. We will look at the spiritual outlooks of each and how those informed their activism. Feel free to attend one, some, or all of the sessions. See you there! education and more you answer, “yes,” it places you in direct conversation with them. It allows the prophets to speak directly to you about your life right here, right now. Friday Tanakh Study Fridays, 1:45-3:00-ish pm We will begin reading the Book of Joshua, primarily in English, with Hebrew explanations. As usual, there will be a lot of discussion, that will surely take us down many roads! In Rabbi Rami Shapiro’s book, he asks, “Do the Hebrew prophets matter.” If o What is the best mitzvah anyone has ever performed for you? o What is the best mitzvah you have performed for others? o What smell or taste triggers a positive childhood memory? o Do you think Jews will exist as a distinct group in one thousand years? o If the Christmas season were to suddenly disappear, how would you feel? o Who is the most Jewish person you know? Why? o If you have pets, do you think of them as Jewish? o Have you ever been told that you do or do not look Jewish? How does that make you feel? o Why is New York City considered the most Jewish city on earth? o Can you recite all 10 commandments? Do you think they are still relevant? o Draw a picture of a gefilte fish. o What is the strangest superstition or tradition your family holds? o Have you ever heard someone use the Yiddish expression “Oy vey?” o How can you tell if a person is a real “mensch?” o When was the last time you made the “right” decision and felt it in your “kishkas” or stomach? Begin 2015 with purpose, on purpose and being Jewish, everyday! Religious School is back in session the 2nd week in January. It’s so close to us that if CRC were a home with middle school students, they would attend Langston Middle School! Rabbi Susan and CRC’s Director of Advocacy and Communications Jen Bernstein met with her recently about collaborating on several projects, including mentoring the students. We are looking for a few champions who are interested in being mentors for Ariel’s kids at Langston. The program will begin shortly after the first of the year. If you are interested, please contact Jennifer Bernstein at (314) 3611564, ext. 117 or jenniferb@centralreform. org. tikkun olam Social Responsibility Shabbat near future. For many St. Louisans, they are unaware that there’s a fire burning in North County. It’s invisible to area residents, buried deep beneath the ground in the Bridgeton landfill. But the smoldering waste is an unavoidable presence in town, giving off a putrid odor that clouds the air miles away. Reports from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) indicate dangerously high levels of benzene and hydrogen sulfide in the air. Thankfully, a coalition has started to take action. Two members of this coalition are Harvey Ferdman, Policy Analyst for State Representative Bill Otto, and Dawn Chapman, a Bridgeton resident who formed the advocacy organization JustMomsStl. Their mission is to create awareness about the radioactive material that is interspersed throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan area, and areas that have been deeply affected by these materials. They also work toward the eradication of harmful materials from exposure to the general populace. Friday, January 9, 7:30 pm In 1973, 8000 tons of nuclear weapons waste from the Manhattan Project was illegally dumped at the nearby West Lake Landfill. West Lake is the “child” of the nuclear weapons waste pile adjacent to Coldwater Creek. Chronic exposure to ionizing radiation has a latent effect, meaning that illness often doesn’t occur until 10 – 20 years later. Because this is the same nuclear weapons waste that originated in Coldwater Creek, the group expects to experience the same disease and death that is occurring in the Coldwater Creek sometime in the If the problem is not solved, the entire St. Louis metropolitan region could be threatened with radioactive smoke if the fire at the Bridgeton Landfill were ever to reach the nuclear site at West Lake. If you would like to learn how you can help, or just get more information, please join us for January’s Social Responsibility Shabbat. If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Bernstein at (314) 361-1564, ext 117 or [email protected]. 5 2015 Medicaid Expansion Lobby Days/Days of Action Do you want to be a part of the movement that will help close the coverage gap and provide health insurance for over 300,000 hard-working Missourians? When I went to the introductory meeting last summer at Rabbi Susan’s house, I was not alone. By the time I left, there were wall to wall people. All of us were eager to do a mitzvah by visiting and befriending a person in our Jewish community. It sounded like a good program, and doable because I could visit my Buddy as my schedule allowed. Wendy Bell called me within two weeks and by the third week I went to visit Leah Larson, my Blessing Buddy (pictured left). I thought it was a good omen that her name was Leah, the same name as my older sister. I have always loved Leah from the Torah, who I thought got a raw deal because she married a man that was in love with her sister. When I saw the television miniseries The Red Tent (based on the book by Anita Diamant) on Lifetime, I felt that Leah finally got her just due. She was portrayed by Minnie Driver, a wonderful actress, who showed how Leah rose above her challenges. Driver gave her the warmth, love, and strength that she deserved. Both of the women named Leah that I know possess these same traits. Leah is in a Catholic Nursing Home, with her husband Gene, called Little Sisters of the Poor. The facility is located about 30 minutes from my home. I thought, in my storytelling mind, that she was like Rapunzel locked away from everything familiar and Jewish, so I was going to climb up the tower and rescue her! Who knew that we would become fast friends and develop a mutually meaningful relationship. The facility is bright, clean and friendly. Leah is on the 3rd floor in a large, open bright room, full of stuffed animals, Mardi Gras beads, and bright colors everywhere. Leah has a desk full of art work that she made from napkins, paper towels, and Styrofoam cups. It looks like a little white village sitting on the table. Talk about recycling! I came armed with Challah, cookies and a book called Chosen Tales, an anthology of Jewish stories. We looked at each other and smiled. She insisted that I read my story about my great grandmother that is in the book. I look forward to my visits once or twice a month. We talk and laugh about everything. Leah reads the newspaper cover-to -cover everyday, so current events are often discussed. She was very worried when Rabbi Susan was in Israel, so I brought her the blog Susan wrote to all of us. We talk about family, clothes, jewelry, food, and books. Leah is an avid reader and is always reading a good book. Me too! It is always a pleasure to visit my friend and Blessing Buddy Leah Larson, take her goodies (especially cheese and chocolate), and enjoy a visit that improves both of our lives. Do you have a New Year’s resolution? Make it a spiritual one! If you would like to volunteer for this wonderful program, be paired with someone, or know someone who could use a Blessing Buddy, please contact Wendy Bell at (314) 3611564, ext. 104 or [email protected]. tributes and yahrzeits 8 NEAL HARWOOD tributes TO MAKE A TRIBUTE TO A CRC FUND ONLINE, PLEASE GO TO WWW.CENTRALREFORM.ORG, AND CLICK ON THE DONATE/TRIBUTE LINK ON THE BOTTOM OF THE MENU.
