VENICE: THE MILLENNIUM TO 1946
Venice was already well established a thousand years
ago, busily throwing off the yoke of the Byzantine
empire. Venice – “La Serenissima” was a world player
in the middle ages, reaching the peak of her power
and influence after her succesful involvement in the
Fourth Crusade. She dominated the medieval trade
routes and her sons, notably Marco Polo, set off
on voyages of exploration to the earth’s remotest
corners.
Politically speaking, it was downhill after that, so
much so that we like to think that the major event in
Venice’s history was in 1946 heralding the arrival of William Clementson, an Englishman who
served in Italy in WW2. He fell in love with the city and began to make a living out of showing
visitors the delights of his adopted home.
Today’s Venice is a living museum of its turbulent past. No other city has ever used its wealth
and power to such magnificent effect – her architecture is there to inspire us today, as it has
inspired visitors for centuries, her art is to be found in hundreds of churches and many fine
galleries, and her music still delights us.
