Dear Parents/Guardians:
It has been a great start to the school year. I wanted to take the time to inform you on
how SPELLING fits into our curriculum. Spelling is so important at this age. Not only does it
introduce them to new words each week, but it teaches them how to correctly say and spell
the words as well. Students work a lesson each week to help with the meaning of the words
as well as writing each word in a sentence if that applies to that particular lesson.
Spelling tests are given on Friday’s. During the week, students are given the
opportunity to work on the spelling lessons that correspond with their words for the week. The
lessons are due on Friday. Students are well-informed to study each week for their tests and
to complete the lessons. They have the opportunity to go to the homework lab in the SWAG
(Students with a Goal) room from 3:30-4:00, Monday-Thursday. If a student fails his or her
spelling test, he/she will call you immediately to inform you that they were not successful on
their test and will have to go to SWAG to make up the test on their own time after school.
This way, I have had immediate parent contact, and you are informed of your child’s spelling
test grade.
www.spellingcity.com/brandimill is a web address that the students can go to study
their words on a computer. Just look for the current list and grade and they can practice a
spelling test, play games, and become more familiar with the words. 
I must stress that it is the responsibility of each student to make up his/her test.
They only have to retest on the words that they missed. They must write them out 10 times a
piece and will receive 2 points for everyone they get right. In turn, I will award those points to
their test. This is a wonderful way for the students to gain points lost resulting in a passing
grade.
I want your child to be as successful as he or she can be. I realize that spelling is not
everyone’s strong suit, but it is so important that they learn how to study a little bit each
night. It is important for me to have this contact with you, so that you understand how
important the spelling curriculum is in my Writing class. Thank you for helping, and if you
have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me. Here’s to a great year!

I,__________________________, have read the letter above and will do my part to help my
child succeed on their spelling tests this year. I will make sure that my child has done his or
her spelling lesson and is prepared to take their test every Friday. I am aware that if my child
does not do his or her homework, it will result in a detention, and I will receive a phone call. I
also know that I will receive a phone call if my child does not pass his or her spelling test.
