Important Facts about the Constitution The Constitution is a plan that guides the government of our country. It begins with an introduction called the Preamble. James Madison is called the “Father of the Constitution.” The Constitution has seven parts, called articles. The first three articles set up the three branches of our country’s government and the fourth article is about the rights of the states. The Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. The first 10 amendments of the Constitution are called the Bill of Rights. Background on Constitution Day In 2004, a law was passed mandating that all publicly funded educational institutions provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution on September 17 (or the nearest weekday) each year. The day is officially called “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.”
