NOTE FROM THE HEAD COACH
Winning the Atlantic 10
Championship in 2005 was such a
fantastic accomplishment for our
lacrosse program. Considering
Temple had dominated the
conference before our entry in
2002, to build the program within
three years and achieve the
automatic qualifier to the NCAA
Tournament is quite a feat!
Now, the building process is over
and four years of recruits are now
here at Richmond. As I have
quoted to my teams prior to this
year, the “blue collar” work is
done; however, it’s now time to
reset those goals. Not only do we
want to repeat and win the A-10
Championship in 2006, but we
want
a
regular
season
championship as well. The team is
also committed to going further in
the NCAA tournament.
I invite you to check out the
University of Richmond and you
will soon see how its reputation as a private school is nationally renowned, offering a
superb liberal arts education. Richmond’s size offers an intimacy among the studentathletes that is very supportive and family-like, while still allowing an individual to
explore other personal interests. The University is located in a gorgeous private
setting and is less then three hours from many of our Top 10 opponents.
I thank you in advance for your interest in the University of Richmond. I hope you
would like to help us fulfill our goals of capturing the A-10 Championship, earning
the NCAA Tournament berth, and climbing high in the national rankings.

• In 2004, the Spiders earned their highest national ranking in nine years when they
held the No. 18 spot in the IWLCA poll. Richmond was included in the poll for
five weeks during the season.
• Richmond, focused on becoming a national powerhouse, continues to play a
tremendous schedule. In 2006, the Spiders will face five teams that advanced to
last year’s NCAA Tournament, including Duke, Maryland, Mount St. Mary’s,
Towson, and Virginia.
• In Coach Murphy’s first four seasons at Richmond, the Spiders have compiled a
38-30 record and made three appearances in the Atlantic 10 Championships, with
one Atlantic 10 Tournament Title and their first-ever appearance in the NCAA
Tournament.
• Lynn Boliver (1991-94) became the first player in Spiders’ lacrosse history to score
more than 100 points and 100 goals in a career. An All-American and a Division I
All-Region selection, she earned conference first-team honors for three consecutive
seasons.
• The Spiders’ lacrosse program has boasted five All-Americans and five AllRegional performers since becoming a Divison I sport at UR in 1992. Since joining
the Atlantic 10 three years ago, the Spiders have earned eight spots on the yearly
All-Conference teams and in 2002, Kristy Gallagher was named co-Defensive
Player of the Year.
• After capturing the Atlantic 10 title, Richmond’s 2005 squad earned the program’s
first-ever invitation to the NCAA Championships and fell to second-seed Duke,
16-4, in first round action.

MY PERSPECTIVE
JEN CIELEWICH
MY PERSPECTIVE
2006 RICHMOND LACROSSE
Jen Cielewich ‘04 played at Richmond
for three years after transferring from
Boston University to join newly-hired
head coach Sue Murphy.
I was ready to take a risk. I needed a change. I was searching for
myself and what I found was Richmond lacrosse.
I made my decision and there was no turning back. I was on my
way to the University of Richmond and I had no idea what I was
up against. Transferring from Boston, I thought that I had landed
on another planet when I first set foot on Richmond soil. I looked
around and it was quite clear that I had made a mistake. People
were smiling, girls were wearing sundresses, guys were wearing
pastels; I was scared beyond belief and, to top it off, I was wearing
sweatpants…I did not fit in. At least, I thought, there is always
lacrosse. Ha! The joke was on me, but I certainly was not
laughing. On the first day of practice, we ran shuttles for two
hours. It was probably, at the time, one of the worst weeks of my
life.
What I wouldn’t give to have another week like that.
Richmond soon became my home and the “little team that could”
instantly became my family. Week after week, I was inspired by
my teammates’ eagerness to believe. They believed in our team,
our coach, our philosophies, our work ethic, and me. In the chaos
and confusion of that first year of unknowns, I knew that I had
found my place at Richmond.
Each year, the team faced new challenges and seemingly endless
amounts of obstacles. Leadership was born in unexpected places
and unsuspecting people. We grew together as players, as people,
and as teammates. We learned lessons the hard way and we hated
it, but we pushed through together. We beat the odds. The odds
beat us. We learned to appreciate the work and saw the results of
our labor. We laughed. We laughed a lot. We played. We excelled.
We fell. We were together.
Everything was an experience, a test, a piece of the puzzle which
would fit together to form my character, who I would become,
and, for the first time, who I wanted to be. I opened my eyes and
took it all in.
My senior year was a dream and it seemed to last only as long. I
learned quickly to appreciate what I would soon be missing.
Practices, agilities, track workouts (believe it or not), pranks, late
nights, long talks, eating junk, slapping sticks, wearing goggles,
bus rides, locker rooms, Coach, camp Richmond, winning, GoreTex-OK, itineraries, losing, new gear, The National Anthem, pregame jitters, post-game cries, inside jokes, teammates,
friendships, and roommates.
In the end, I was left with answers to the many questions that I
had previously agonized over. When the last whistle blows, who
will you be? How much have you grown? What did you
sacrifice? Where will you go? How will you be defined? My
answers are embedded in who I have become. Everyday I tackle
the questions that once haunted me and answer them with my
actions. I pay attention to the lessons I have learned through
lacrosse and find that those answers are still the ones that I call
upon.
Richmond lacrosse: thank you for being my teacher, friend, and
family. For now, I am moving on; however, not apart. The
memories of you are in the pieces of my heart and the profound
and irreplaceable reward of my risk is buried in the roots of
Richmond lacrosse.

2006 LACROSSE SEASON PREVIEW
2006 LACROSSE SEASON PREVIEW
American by Inside Women’s Lacrosse Magazine, and junior
Christina D’Angelo, is returning all of its starters from last
year. Sophomores Erin Kennedy and Sam Tract have taken on
tremendous responsibility and show excellent defensive
decisions. This team’s defense proved its readiness for this
year’s challenges after allowing only five goals in two of the
Spiders’ fall games.
“I feel so comfortable with the defenders in front of me,” stated
senior Spider goalie Jackie Swansburg. “This is the best line of
defense that I have ever played behind. I know they are going
to get their job done, so it makes my job easier.” Also returning
and ready to help the Spiders’ defense with a wealth of
minutes are juniors Sarah Ingle and Kirby Thalenberg and
sophomore Zara Nematollahi. Freshman Jackie Blucher
brings outstanding footwork and excellent mark-down ability
to the Spiders’ backline.
Jackie Swansburg will once again be relied on to anchor the
Spiders in goal after seeing action in every minute of every
game for the past two seasons. A member of the 2005 A-10 AllChampionship team, she finished the year with a save
percentage of .445, ranking fifth in the program for a single
season.
ATTACK
Seniors Caroline McGuire and Sara Allen and juniors Ashley
Friend and Morghan Vahue are once again expected to lead
the Spiders on the attacking end. McGuire, who led the team
www.RichmondSpiders.com
Sophomore Erin Kennedy will contribute on the Spiders’ defensive end in 2006.
“The team is committed to excellence and a higher standard of
Richmond lacrosse,” stated University of Richmond women’s
lacrosse head coach Sue Murphy of her 2006 lacrosse team.
“This is going to be the squad that takes us further than we’ve
ever been within our conference, as well as nationally.”
In the last four years of Atlantic 10 play, the Spiders have made
three appearances in the A-10 Championships, held the No. 18
spot in the IWLCA poll, and captured one Atlantic 10
Championship Title, in addition to earning the program’s firstever invitation to the NCAA Championship. They are now
looking to build upon their recent success and show the nation
just how strong the Richmond lacrosse program is.
Returning a determined head coach and 16 players from last
year’s victorious squad and adding six extremely talented
freshmen and a knowledgeable and committed assistant coach
(Amy Altig, a JMU lacrosse standout) in the already thriving
mix, the Spiders are embarking upon what could be their best
year yet. And, after years of success and an undefeated fall
season, the program has earned a tremendous amount of
respect with Inside Women’s Lacrosse magazine that ranked the
Spiders No. 18 in the 2006 pre-season poll.
DEFENSE
The Spiders’ defense, led by an experienced and strong group
of players, including senior Allison Nuzzi, junior Megan
Riedy, who was named a 2006 Third-Team Pre-Season AllSenior Caroline McGuire, last year’s leading scorer, returns to the Spiders attack.
12
Spider seniors/captains McGuire, Allen, Nuzzi, and
Swansburg are excited for the promise of the upcoming
season. “Winning the Atlantic 10 Championship last year was
a huge accomplishment for our program,” stated McGuire.
“This year, however, our goals and standards have been set at
a higher level. Not only are we looking for a repeat Atlantic 10
Championship and an automatic NCAA bid, but we also have
our sights set on advancing in the NCAA Tournament. With
the talent and experience we have on this team, anything is
possible!”
2006 RICHMOND LACROSSE
in goals last season and in the fall, loves to handle the ball
under pressure. The A-10 Championship’s Most Outstanding
Performer scored both the game-tying and game-winning
goals last year in an exciting last-minute win over rival Temple
University in the Atlantic 10 semi-final. In that same game,
Friend added five goals to help the Spiders advance to the
Atlantic 10 Finals. “We are coming off a great season and an
even better fall season,” said Friend. “I can’t wait to do even
bigger things this season!”
Vahue is also coming off a big 2005 season in which she
finished fourth on the team with 13 goals, including one hat
trick, while Allen returns to the line-up after adding seven
goals and is healthy after recovering from various injuries.
Playing a huge support role for the Spiders are sophomores
Jenna Hubbard and Claire Cunniff, who are both looking for
breakout seasons. Last year, Cunniff led all freshmen with
eight goals, and Hubbard, who led the team in shooting
percentage (.583) and shots on goal (1.000), followed with
seven goals, including one hat trick.
Returning from two years of injury is Caroline ‘Fe’ Grumbine,
who is ready to impact as soon as she can step on the field.
Freshman Mandy Friend, who was a help to the Spiders in the
fall, is looking to continue to be a threat and follow the positive
influence of her sister and become an impact player right away.
Rounding out the Spiders’ attack are freshmen Lexie
Marrocco, Sarah Townsend, Katy Smullen, and Allison
Ayers. The three newcomers have all proven that they have
what it takes to make their presence felt on the field and will
be expected to contribute right away.

HEAD COACH SUE MURPHY
HEAD COACH SUE MURPHY
14
FIFTH SEASON
MASSACHUSETTS ‘90
Excellence. Richmond head women’s
lacrosse coach Sue Murphy accepts
nothing less. In her first four seasons at
Richmond, the Spiders have compiled a
38-30 record and made three
appearances in the Atlantic 10
championships, with one Atlantic 10
Tournament Title and their first-ever
appearance in the NCAA Tournament in
2005.
Last season, after winning the Atlantic
10 Championships, Murphy earned
national recognition as she was named
the women’s lacrosse Coach of the Week
by CSTV (5/9). Additionally, she led her
team to a 9-8 overall record, and a fourth
place finish in the Atlantic 10 with a 5-2
mark in the conference, as well as the
program’s first ever appearance in the
NCAA Tournament.
In 2004, Murphy helped her team to its
highest national ranking in over two
decades when Richmond held the No.
18 position after defeating a trio of Top
20 teams. In her first year on the
sidelines, the Spiders got off to their bestever start (6-2) on their way to recording
12 wins, the most in the program’s
history.
Murphy came to Richmond after
serving as head coach at Boston
University, where she launched the
women’s lacrosse program to the
Division I level six years ago. Murphy
did not rest on her laurels, however, and
celebrate the program’s rise to the
varsity level; instead, she took the
program to heights some only dream
about. Murphy’s BU teams excelled
against some of the toughest
competition in the country during her
six seasons at the helm, posting wins
over national powerhouses and, in her
last three seasons at Boston, the Terriers
posted rankings of 17th, 11th, and 13th
in the country. In 2000, Murphy directed
the Terriers to the America East regular
season and tournament championships
and to an NCAA at-large berth. Murphy
was twice named the America East
coach of the year.
From 1998-2005, Murphy was the head
coach for the U.S.A National

Murphy currently directs the Richmond

STUDENT-ATHLETE
FAMILY COORDINATOR
Those Spider supporters most loyal
and closest to the student-athletes –
their families – now have some
support of their own. University of
Richmond Director of Athletics
Amy Altig enters her first year as an
assistant coach with the University
of Richmond women’s lacrosse
team.
Altig was one of 28 players recently
selected to represent the United
States on the 2005-2006 U.S.
Women’s Lacrosse Developmental Team and is one of only 10
players on the roster who competed on the 2004-05 Developmental
Team. She is now in her third year with the team and was captain of
the 2004 U.S. Lacrosse Divisional Champion Mid-Atlantic 2 team.
A four-year starter in the goal for James Madison, Altig served as
team tri-captain her senior year and earned All-CAA second team
honors in both 2003 and 2004. In her final season, she ranked 20th in
the nation in save percentage (.514) and, as a junior, finished 13th in
GAA (8.7).
She recently competed in the 2005 Senior All-Star Lacrosse game and
was one of three Dukes players to represent the South team.
Following her senior campaign, Altig received the Comeback Athlete
of the Year Award, an honor presented annually by the James
Madison Department of Sports Medicine.
Jim Miller announced the creation of
the
student-athlete
family
coordinator and has appointed
Allison Vogler to the position. The
position will give parents and relatives of the department’s more
than 400 student-athletes a point-person with whom they can initiate
communications on issues that impact them.
“We want our families to know we care about them and their
children and that they have a place to turn within the department to
get their questions answered,” said Miller. “Our parents have trusted
us to provide the best possible college experience for their son or
daughter during a significant four or five year span of their life, and
we believe the family relationship is an important part of making that
experience a success.”
AS SISTANT COACH/SUPPORT STAFF
AMY ALTIG
Vogler is already a familiar face within the department, also serving
as director of Spider Club operations. She can be reached at (804) 2898694 or at [email protected].
Altig graduated from James Madison in 2005 with a bachelor’s
degree in kinesiology and business.

“I consider myself so incredibly fortunate
to have been a part of this team for the
past four years and to have been called a
leader and captain. This group of girls is
amazingly talented and it is rare to find,
in the same group of women, such a
tremendous amount of respect for one
another on and off the field. I know each
member of this team has my back out
there. We play for each other and we
WILL win as a team in 2006.”
-Allison Nuzzi
“Over the past four years, I have found the
best friends and teammates. Through
wins and losses, hard workouts and even
harder practices, we have bonded together
and have become closer everyday. These
moments have not only made us a better
team, but have also made us better people.
I am grateful for each time I step on the
field with my teammates and for each
chance I get to call us a ‘team.’”
-Sara Allen
“Winning the Atlantic 10 Championship
last year was a huge accomplishment for
our program; however, this year our goals
and standards have been set at a higher
level. Not only are we looking for a repeat
Atlantic 10 Championship and an
automatic NCAA bid, but we also have
our sights set on advancing in the NCAA
Tournament. With the talent and
experience we have on this team, anything
is possible!”
-Caroline McGuire
“In my four-year experience here, our team
has grown immensely. Winning has
become something we expect, not just
strive for. If I could leave this team
knowing one thing, it’s knowing that this
tradition will continue for the remainder
of the program. So, for now, I will make
sure that our team understands this
tradition and refuses to lose.”

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now
the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived.
What started as an eight-school, men’s
basketball-only affiliation has grown into a
14-university, 21-sport league that is
universally hailed as one of the best
conferences in the country.
That growth and prominence is a direct
result of the ideals and commitments of the
member institutions of the Atlantic 10. The
University of Dayton, Duquesne University,
Fordham University, The George
Washington University, La Salle University,
University of Massachusetts, University of
Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St.
Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph’s
University, Temple University, and Xavier
University have formed the foundation of
the Atlantic 10 - a foundation which is

further strengthened this season with the
additions of the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte and Saint Louis
University.
In 2005-06, the Atlantic 10 Conference
celebrates its 30th anniversary season.
Although anniversaries are a good time to
reflect, this anniversary is a celebration of the
future as much as it is of the past.
“It is with pride that we look back at our
accomplishments and see how far this
league has truly come,” says A-10
commissioner Linda Bruno, who begins her
12th season at the helm of the league - the
longest tenure of any commissioner in the
Conference’s history. “More importantly,
however, the additions of Charlotte and
Saint Louis ensure that the future is brighter
than it has ever been. We are adding two
members who will greatly enhance the
national profile of all our sports and expose
our programs to two new markets in which
our universities actively recruit. The A-10
has never been as strong as it is now.”
The Atlantic 10 Conference, which spans
eight states and the District of Columbia
with a total population of almost 73 million
people, will crown champions in 21 sports
this season: baseball, men’s and women’s
basketball, men’s and women’s cross
country, field hockey, men’s golf, women’s
lacrosse, men’s and women’s indoor and
outdoor track & field, women’s rowing,
men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s
and women’s swimming & diving, men’s
and women’s tennis, and women’s
volleyball.
2004-05 REVIEW
George Washington won its first-ever men’s
basketball title and represented the Atlantic
10 in the NCAA Tournament. Saint Joseph’s
and Temple also earned postseason bids
with the Hawks reaching the final of the
National Invitation Tournament. In
women’s basketball, the A-10 sent four
teams to the postseason as Temple earned
the automatic bid by winning its second
consecutive Atlantic 10 championship. The
Owls were joined by George Washington
and Richmond, marking the 11th time in the
last 12 years that the A-10 has sent multiple
teams to the NCAA Women’s Basketball
Tournament. Xavier also garnered a
postseason berth and advanced to the third
round of the WNIT.
Rhode Island won its first-ever A-10 baseball
championship and earned its first NCAA
berth; in field hockey, Richmond, which was
ranked as high as 10th nationally, went
unbeaten in Conference play for the second
straight year in advancing to the NCAAs;
Xavier took the league’s automatic berth to
the NCAA Men’s Golf Tournament, where it
was joined by Rhode Island; and Richmond
won its first A-10 lacrosse title and the bid
to the NCAAs.
The Massachusetts women’s rowing team
won its 10th straight A-10 title, setting a
league record for the most consecutive
tournament championships won by any
team in any sport. UMass also won the
ECAC title; George Washington advanced to
the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer
Tournament; Dayton lost in overtime in its
NCAA
women’s
soccer
opener;
Massachusetts won its 17th A-10 softball title
to advance to the NCAAs; Richmond
represented the A-10 in the NCAA men’s
and women’s tennis tournaments; and
Dayton won the Conference’s automatic bid
to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.
In all, 374 teams have represented the
Atlantic 10 Conference in postseason play
since the 1976-77 season.
