Winter 2015 edition Peninsula Co-op has had another successful year thanks to your support and patronage. The Peninsula Co-op membership database has continued to grow and has now reached over 77,000 members. We are very pleased to announce that this year we rebated $5.5 million back to our memberowners for their purchases during our Fiscal 2015 year, April 2014 to March 2015. During that time frame, in addition to the rebate, we contributed over $370,000 to local organizations through our Community Support Program. It has been a busy renovation year for us. The Food Centre renovations and Keating Mall updates were completed under budget and the sales results are very good. Our South Duncan Gas and Convenience Centre (at Bench Road and Trans Canada Highway) re-opened in December 2014 after a total rebuild. Sales results from this location have far exceeded our expectations in addition having over 260 new member-owners joining. Our Millstream and North Duncan (Canada Avenue) Gas and Convenience Centres received a thorough interior renovation. If you haven’t visited any of these sites recently, we think you will be impressed. During the last year, Peninsula Co-op has been providing Management Services to the Comox Co-op and during that time the two Co-ops have been discussing merging. On November 1st the Commentator member-owner newsletter was distributed in the Times Colonist to announce the proposed merger and to advise our member-owners of the Special Membership Meeting to be held on December 1, 2015 at the Saanich Fairgrounds. We are very excited about this opportunity. If you have any questions regarding the amalgamation information that was distributed please contact Paul Hames, Board of Directors President (250-812-8389) or Dave Hoy, CEO/GM ([email protected]). From all of us at Peninsula Co-op, heartfelt wishes to all of you and your families for a great holiday season and the best in 2016. When will I get my first rebate and what period does it cover? Rebates are paid in December. Your Co-op’s fiscal year runs from April to March. All purchases made in a fiscal year are included in your rebate. For example: All purchases made between April 2014 to March 2015 will be included in your December 2015 rebate. What if I forget my number or my receipt has the wrong membership number on it? No problem. Each location has access to member numbers and can look it up for you. You can contact our Customer Service department at (250) 652-1188, toll free at 1-877-6525752 or email [email protected] to have your purchase record corrected if the wrong member number was entered. Can I cash rebate cheques from December 2014 or prior? As of October 31, 2015 all prior years’ rebate cheques will expire. As a result, they cannot be used to pay for purchases at Peninsula Co-op and Save-On Gas or deposited at the bank. Please contact our administration office at 250-6525752 and we will gladly replace your expired cheque. What purchases are included when calculating my membership rebate? Your Co-op Food Centre, Co-op Gas and Convenience Centres, Co-op Home Heating, Co-op Cardlock and participating Save-On Gas purchases are included when calculating your rebate. In 2015 the member-owner rebate for Co-op Food Centre purchases is 5.0% for the fiscal year. The rebate on petroleum purchased at Co-op Gas Centre and Home Heating is 3.9% or 4.7 cents per litre. This year’s rebate is 2.35 cents per litre or the equivalent of 1.95% at participating Save-On Gas locations at: 5295 West Saanich Road, Victoria; 1111 First Avenue, Ladysmith; 2760 Shawnigan Lake Road, Shawnigan Lake; and 308 Menzies Street, Victoria. How will I receive my rebate? Your rebate will be mailed to you in a cheque. A rebate cheque of $100 or less can be used to pay for purchases at any Peninsula Co-op Gas Centre, the Food Centre, Home Heating or Save-On Gas locations. If your rebate is less than $5.00 this amount will be added to your membership account. Is my membership rebate taxable? Tax is withheld from rebates of more than $100. This withholding tax is 15% of the amount that is over $100. If your purchases are for personal use they are not taxable and you can claim back this amount as pre-paid income tax by using box 22 of your T4A and including this amount on your 2015 Income Tax Return. T4A’s will be mailed out separately in early 2016. If your purchases are for business purposes the amount of your rebate can be included as part of your income tax calculation. Why don’t I receive all of my rebate? Your rebate is in the form of membership shares. The Co-op Board of Directors reviews the financial position of the Co-op each year and decides how much of these membership shares can be paid out to members and how much will need to be retained to finance operations and ensure on-going success. This year 62.5% of the rebate will be paid out by cheque in December. The remaining 37.5% of your rebate is invested in your share account for a minimum of 6 years and paid out at that time providing the Co-op’s financial position remains strong. Why is the fuel rebate different from the grocery rebate? The 5% rebate on purchases from the Co-op Food Centre is consistent with previous years. The percentage rebate on fuel and home heating purchases in 2015 is 3.9%. The percentage is reviewed each year and may change as a result of the Co-op’s financial performance and fluctuating gas prices. This year the rebate on fuel and home heating purchases is equivalent to 4.7 cents per litre. Can a business or community organization become a Peninsula Co-op member? Yes.
