Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
An isthmus is a narrow strip of land bordered on both sides
by water that connects two larger bodies of land. The term comes
from the Greek word isthmos, a narrow neck of land. Its counterpart
is a strait. A strait is a narrow channel of water that links two
larger navigable bodies of water. The term
strait commonly describes a navigable
water passage between two land masses.
The shipping industry certainly
knows the true meaning of isthmus. That’s
because many canals are built through
them as time-saving shortcuts in shipping
routes. The Panama Canal and Suez Canal
are examples. The former is located on the
Isthmus of Panama. It links the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic
Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The latter was built on the Isthmus
of Suez. It connects the Red Sea with the Mediterranean Sea.
