A Surprise Winter Windfall
When Avril showed me this photo
back in early October, taken by Tom
Muir, she said to me “I wonder if
there’s a “crock of gold” at the end
of the rainbow”. A week or so later
the Club received a “surprise” letter
from KPMG - so now read on.
In 2009 Bridport and West Dorset
Golf Club, a private members’ golf
club like ours, submitted a voluntary
disclosure to HMRC seeking the
repayment of a significant amount of output VAT on the basis that visiting golfers enjoyed the same facilities as club members whose subscriptions were exempt from VAT.
Not surprisingly, HMRC rejected this and the issue went to a Tribunal who found in
favour of the golf club under EU law. At this stage, the National Golf Clubs Advisory
Association, working in conjunction with KPMG, contacted all private members’ clubs
to submit similar disclosures, which our Secretary did, in March 2009.
HMRC believed that the tribunal had erred in interpreting EU law and remained of the
view that visitors’ green fees remained standard rated. In 2013 the case was eventually
referred to the European Court of Justice who agreed that the UK had incorrectly treated
the VAT liability of green fees at non-profit making sports clubs.
There were several appeals both by HMRC and by proprietary golf and sports clubs,
whose membership subscriptions are subject to VAT, and the issue went to the Royal
Courts of Justice in 2014, and was eventually resolved in December 2015.
Because we had registered in March 2009 with KPMG to represent the Club and had
submitted the necessary VAT records and calculations, we were eligible to claim back to
1996, with interest, resulting in a claim of £159,039 plus £53,498 simple interest, a total
of £212,537, which was gratefully received into the Club’s bank account in October.
Against that sum we have to offset KPMG’s fee of £29,063 but this still gives us a grand
total “winter windfall” of £183,474.
Now that we have a 50-year lease, this money will allow us to invest in the long-term
future of the Club by embarking on one or even a few major projects which will hopefully enhance the overall experience for members. The obvious problem which is now upon
us is how do we spend the money for the best return? Not only in “satisfaction” terms for
members but also, from a strictly business viewpoint, taking into account the return on
investment. If you have any thoughts or ideas on what additional facilities you would
most like to see provided at the Club let us know.
Tim Bowler ([email protected])
Please note that it is really important that members display their membership bag tags
at all times when playing the course, after all it is a condition of membership.
Meet the Gentlemen’s Captain - Neil Highfield
I would like to say what a great honour it is to be elected as Captain of Wollaton
Park Golf Club for 2017.
Born in Stockton on Tees just after the war, I went to a grammar school in Middlesbrough where I played football, cricket and boxed for the school. I left after
my "O" Levels and worked in the laboratories at ICI Billingham for three years. It
was as a 17-year old that I gave up football and played rugby for Stockton Colts.
In 1964 I went to Nottingham College of Education to train to be a teacher and
continued to play rugby and cricket. I also became a qualified football referee
and an MCC cricket coach.
I taught in the City of Nottingham for 28 years (Cottesmore, Peveril and Padstow)
playing cricket for Notts Schoolmasters in The Combination League and Wollaton
in The Gunn and Moore Alliance. I joined Nottingham Moderns R.F.C. in 1967
and after a bit of representative rugby guested for Nottingham on a few occasions
and had a season at Leicester where I played in the second XV. Having coached
school teams I began coaching The Moderns in 1974 and did so for 18 seasons.
During this time I managed to get through one or two courses and was appointed
an R.F.U. Senior Coach In 1980. This brought some representative work and a part
-time job with the R.F.U.
In 1995 the school I was in closed so I took redundancy, (plus my pension), and began coaching rugby and
cricket part-time at Nottingham High School, which I enjoyed immensely until I retired in 2010. Even then I went
back part-part time for another five years meaning that I was involved in running school sport for 48 years. I began
playing golf to fill the time in during holidays and eventually joined Bulwell Forest having heard nothing from Wollaton Park following an application for membership.
In 1992 I was finally accepted for membership at Wollaton and spent four years on the waiting list before becoming a
member in 1996 with a handicap of 16. Now playing regularly having, stopped playing cricket, I won a few comps
and quickly came down to 8 (7.9). One of my biggest moments in sport and the most nervous I have ever been came
when I was selected to play with Danny Bursztyn in The Harry Browne Foursomes Finals at Beeston Fields. Colin
Bee, Glynn Krause , Gary Coleman and Steve Rush making up the victorious team managed by Brian Ross. During
my time at Wollaton I have always tried to contribute. Along with Huw Jones I ran the juniors for two and a half
years. I am a past “Stirrer” of Sunday Scrubbers and have spoken and compered at a number of Club dinners. On the
playing side I have played in both the "A" and "B" teams as well as the over-50 's Taskers singles teams.
I used to hit a 3-wood off the tee and a little wooden headed 7-wood off the deck and had some success, playing to 3
in a medal at Wollaton and coming back 2 under gross at Kilworth Springs. Then in 2001 we had the “Foot and
Mouth Disaster” and I think I caught it. When we reopened I just could not hit a ball so I did two things, I went and
had a lesson and bought a driver. Since then, as Phil Harriman rightly says, it is paralysis by analysis, I have more
bubbles in my head than a foam bath and more takeaways than a Chinese restaurant, as those of you that were at
my drive-in will confirm. Consequently my handicap is now going the other way at a rate of knots, but I keep hoping
that there might be a magic cure. With a son (a former member), now a mind coach at a golf academy in Florida, you
would think there must be some hope.
My wife, Phyl, and I together with a number of friends, have always supported the social functions and have had
some great nights, so let us make this year a one to remember. At the AGM I spoke about T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieves More) and also asked for this year to be the "Year of the Smile". I stole the phrase from JFK in asking
“not what the Club can do for you but what can you do for the Club”. We have a great course at Wollaton Park so let
us make it as enjoyable off the course as on it!
Congratulations to Mick Rush on such a successful year as Captain and many thanks to all those who contributed in
any way, no matter how small, remember every little helps!
Finally I would like to thank the “Treorchy Male Voice Choir” for performing at my "Drive In", their singing brought
a tear to my eye!
We also, of course, welcome our two new Vice Captains, Barry Moore and Sharon Clarke. Thank you for taking
on these roles and we hope you have an enjoyable year “learning the ropes”. Barry is a former President of the
Scrubbers and a regular in the “roll-ups”. Sharon, apart from playing with the ladies, is a keen supporter of the
mixed section alongside her husband, Rob.
Finance Matters
I recently attended an England Golf “Business Growth Hub” at Beeston Fields Golf Club which was all about
“Futureproofing your Club - Doing the Basics Brilliantly”, “Growing your Business - Change is the Heartbeat of
Growth” and “Growing your Membership - Staying One Step Ahead”. There was a lot to take in during the 6 hour
seminar but there were some very interesting facts to be learnt and some very pertinent questions posed. We have
“set our stall out” to be a “true members’ club” which will hopefully make us “stand out” and help us “build our
brand” but are we “just open for business” and not being aggressive enough at looking for “new business”? Are our
“customers” so delighted they only buy mainly from us? Business planning is the key to success with “survival no
longer being enough” and “it’s no longer about cutting costs but driving up revenues”.
It was reported that although participation in our sport is on the increase, membership of “traditional golf clubs” like
ours is down between 4% and 5% on an annual basis over the last few years. It was also reported that proprietary
clubs, golf hotels and golf centres are much more successful with their marketing campaigns in offering different
packages and membership schemes than traditional clubs when chasing new business. Although we have discounted
commercialisation like weddings and business packages, which potentially impinge on the convenience of members
to use our facilities, what else could we be doing to bring more people through our door who may take up the game
and become members? Do we really know what our members want, in fact, do we really know our members? Are
we moving with the times in providing the right membership packages? We have decided that “word of mouth” is
the most powerful selling tool but are our members active enough on behalf of the Club? It was reported that people
take up the game because someone suggests it and that people join a club because someone suggests it. Are you suggesting the game at our Club to “people”?
So please don’t forget that you, as an existing member, are the best chance we have of recruiting new members!
If you have any thoughts on the above let me know.
Tim Bowler ([email protected])
The 5th May 2017 marks the 90th anniversary of the opening of our Club. We are looking at possible ways to
celebrate this “birthday”. More details will follow but if you have any suitable ideas please let us know.
Whilst on the subject of anniversaries, it is only 10 years to our centenary. Alan Gofton wrote an excellent history of the Club taking us up to the year 2000. Are there any volunteers (one would do!) to research the period
2000 to 2027? Please contact John Todd.
Competitions, Matches & Handicaps
Having only been appointed at the AGM in October as Chairman of Competitions, Matches and Handicaps myself
and the sub-committee have been busy with a couple of meetings already. I would firstly like to thank Dave Parnham
for his previous work in this role and the committee that have continued in their roles supporting me. We have made
some decisions that we all hope will benefit the vast majority of members.
Richard Coleman and myself have analysed the handicap divisions in order to get a more even spread of players on
Competition days across the three divisions which we have now changed. The prize money next year for every competition has been increased with more members receiving a share of the pot available.
Competitions in January and February have been cancelled due to over subscription and the current booking system,
which is to be analysed in the coming months to try and find a fairer system for more members.
I look forward to speaking with more members in the coming months.
Brett Smart ([email protected])
The Club desperately needs a member or members to volunteer to help us re-establish a strong Junior Section.
Over recent years we have been very fortunate to have willing members who have devoted much time in
supporting the juniors in developing a group who played and improved their game together. Recent organisers
have included Bob Jones, Andy Limb, Dave Kirk, Stuart Bradshaw, Trevor White and Neil Highfield & Hugh
Jones. (Apologies if I have missed anyone.)
We had good team in the past and most of the players have progressed to become low handicap golfers. Can
you help? Have you a young member of your family who would like to take up golf? Please get in touch.
House & Social
The winter freeze came early to the WPGC Clubhouse this year when the old 1957 boiler finally ran out of steam!
The good news is that, as we go to print, the new boilers are up and running with a new gas pipeline and other related
work almost complete. It has been a long and sometimes difficult project but the benefits will hopefully be with us for
many years to come. I would like to give a huge thank you to Alan Latham (ex-member), Les Parker and Brian Storey
for all their help throughout. Whilst other works will carry on, including the modernisation of the hot water system
and roof insulation, our next major project and priority will be to provide disabled toilet facilities and access to the
clubhouse in the first 6 months of 2017.
2016 has proved an interesting and fairly successful year on the social side of club activity. Tribute nights, jazz
evenings, family fun golf, quiz nights and the “Captain’s Irish Extravaganza” have all proved popular with members,
however, please remember that we need feedback on all events and will welcome ideas for new activities. Feel free to
get in touch with me or anyone else on the House and Social Committee with your suggestions but most of all keep
an eye on the Socials Noticeboard for all the details of events we have planned during 2017.
Ken Johnston ([email protected])
The club will be making alterations to accommodate facilities for disabled members and visitors. A disabled
toilet will be installed near the front entrance. As a condition of our new lease access must also be available
from outside of the clubhouse on request.
Course Update
At this time last year we experienced the wettest winter on record and some of the Winter
Programme fell
EwanWork
& Robert
behind. This winter, so far, many of the proposed winter work jobs are well under way.
The
General
Committee

appreciates all the hard work and commitment of our greens staff throughout 2016.
The use of the tractor and flail has removed large areas of heavy rough and this work will be repeated next year. The
improvement of the ecological rough was one of the key recommendations in the agronomist’s 2016 report. There
will be further work on this area throughout the spring and summer. The renovation of a number of bunkers has started and in addition drainage has been improved on two greenside bunkers on the 11th/14th and the bunker on the 1st
in front of the right hand side of the green. One of the practice bunkers has been re lined with artificial turf underneath the sand. Artificial turf has been laid at the back of the 14th green and next to the 2nd winter tee. On the nine
hole pitch and putt course artificial turf tees are available for play and in the professionals teaching bay, an artificial
turf base has been laid. Under the terms of our lease the Club is responsible for the maintenance of the tree stock on
the golf course. A Tree Hazard survey has been commissioned and members can see the recommendations on the
Club website. There will need to be some pollarding of some of the ancient tree stock and this will be carried out prior to spring time, weather permitting.
The first phase of the practice nets area is almost complete and the area is now fenced off to prevent deer damage to
newly laid turf. Phase two, which will include drainage and artificial turf, should commence in January/February
2017. All the fairways have been deep tined and this year the semi rough has been included in the programme. The
greens despite the recent deer rut appear to be in good condition. The use of the new Air 2G2 machine on all the
greens and on many of the tees is making a difference. One of the consequences of the heavy rain during last winter
was the muddy state of parts of the 4th/5th and 6th fairways. This year members are requested to take trolleys and
particularly buggies, to the sides of these fairways and use the semi-rough as a pathway. Much of the course furniture
will again undergo refurbishment and much of the seating will be temporarily removed.
In the early months of 2017, the proposals from the Golf Architect should be available for members to view on the
Club website. There will also be a second Agronomists report in April which again will be placed on the website. In
addition to the winter work, staff will be involved in a training programme and the start of an appraisal system. Most
of this training will be conducted by outside providers and this will be an ongoing programme.

There were several incidents reported during the rutting season where golfers had been threatened by large
stags, including one on the 15th hole where four members had to play “can’t catch me”Clive
around
the large tree
Chambers
on the right. Fortunately nobody was hurt but it does remind us that the deer are wild animals and when stags
are not getting “satisfaction” they can turn nasty.
Now Meet the Ladies’ Captain - Caroline Hart
From memory my first recollection of playing golf was at North
Berwick, East Lothian when I was a little girl, when our holiday
wasn't complete until we'd been round the public putting green at
least once. Progression to an 18 hole course was a casual affair
when aged eighteen I played on "browns" not "greens" and tee’d off
from a square of Astroturf when my folks went to live in the Sultanate of Oman and I visited during student holidays. In my twenties
and early thirties I worked long hours as a Human Resources Professional throughout the UK in Retail and Financial Services with no
time for golf. I've always participated in sport but until joining
WPGC it was in the swimming pool or on a netball, squash or tennis
court. I married Jo 20 years ago and we moved to Wollaton Park in
1998 with 10-month old Alistair and soon after, William arrived and
we spent New Year together in the QMC. When Jo initially came
to view our house prior to purchase he suggested that the owner better not mention the back gate entrance leads out to the golf course
when I came to look around two days later!! The boys joined WPGC
before their parents when they were aged 8 & 9 as we thought if they
liked it we'd be able to play together as a family. They did like it and
they have played for the junior teams in recent years whilst Jo and I
played socially at weekends and then I began playing regularly in
2009. Ironically I am luckily the one to use the back gate the most
whilst Jo works hard to pay for our fees!
I have supported the ladies section over the past 5 years on their Comps Committee as Match Secretary and as Val's
Vice-Captain. I enjoy representing the Club in the County League matches and aim to get my handicap down a shot
or two with all the golf I’m going to play!! Our ladies are a warm friendly bunch who are good fun and amazingly a
number still playing golf into their 80's (their age unfortunately not their gross score!). Most lady members play on
Wednesday where we lunch together at the clubhouse after play and discuss the putts we made and missed. We also
have a small number of weekend lady golfers who participate regularly on Saturday Comps and I aim to join them
this year whenever I can. We’ve had several new lady members join in the past year who now have handicaps and
are learning the ropes and we hope all you low handicap male golfers are going to pass on your skills to your partners, daughters and granddaughters and get them down here playing too as we need more keen low handicap ladies
to bolster our Silver Team!
I am looking forward to leading our ladies over the next 12 months in a positive professional manner and very much
appreciate the support of Sharon Clarke as Vice-Captain. We will endeavour to be a good T.E.A.M and follow the
philosophy of “Together Everyone Achieves More”. Happy healthy golfing to all!
Captains’ Drive-Ins
Both Captains had very pleasant mornings for their first
drives as Captains. The men enjoyed a fabulous breakfast.
Neil was then serenaded by a choir, formed mainly from
Louis
his friends from Moderns Rugby Club, and then
setWilley
a new
undisputed, record for the shortest-ever drive in living
memory at a Captain’s Drive-In (including Lady Captains!).
After drinks on the patio in the early morning sunshine
Caroline fared much, much better than Neil with a long,
straight drive bisecting the first fairway.
Thanks to Annie and her team for an excellent breakfast
and lunches, and to James and his team for setting up
drinks to toast the Captains.
The Incoming Captains’ Evening was a really enjoyable event thanks to the warm welcome from our new
Captains, entertaining speeches and excellent support from young saxophonist, Will Underwood. Thank you.

Men’s Seniors
After 7 years as Men’s Seniors Organiser, Derek Allwright has stepped
down. He has been a very enthusiastic and efficient organiser, always
somehow managing to get a full team together, even when faced with
late withdrawals. He often used to “prowl” around the car park looking
for members who were about to reach the qualifying age for the seniors,
obtaining the nickname “The Grim Reaper” in the process!
Thank you Derek for all your efforts which have been really appreciated by the Club as well as all your senior friends.
Ian Culley, seen with Derek in the photo, has “volunteered” to replace
Derek and is also the Senior’s “Captain” for 2017 with Dick Tunney as
his “Vice Captain”.
The Seniors are always looking for newly qualified members by age,
currently 55 years old, so if you’ve just “graduated” and would like to
play in some of the many matches played in a season, get in touch!
The Scrubbers have collected £1,500 this year towards their chosen charity, Prostate Cancer UK. The cheque
will be presented to the charity at Scrubbers on Sunday 18th December.
TO STAY UP TO DATE! CHECK OUT: www.wollatonparkgolfclub.com
We must congratulate two members of our greens staff who have now been employed by the Club for over 25
years, Kevin George, 26 years, and Martin Scothern, 27 years, but they still have an awful long way to go to even
draw level with Roger Buchanan who has clocked up a staggering 53 years.
Membership & Marketing
The Club is trying hard to encourage more ladies to play golf. We have a range of starter packages with coaching
available for those new to golf. The prospect of learning to play golf can be daunting so we would be pleased to arrange coaching sessions for small groups.
More experienced ladies wanting to play competitive or social golf are also welcome to join our Club. We also have
a very active mixed golf section so they can bring their husbands or partners along!
Winners Neil & Lesley
Ours is a “course for all seasons” as it is on land that drains
wonderfully well and is very rarely closed due to bad
weather. We are a traditional members club with two
practice areas, PGA qualified coaches and all the facilities
of a members’ clubhouse.
The Club is now accepting applications for membership
from gentlemen for a limited number of vacancies anticipated in 2017. All members have a choice of 6-day or
7-day membership and until the end of March 2017 there is
no joining fee.
Out of interest we have looked at the age profile (see right)
of our membership, playing and social. We have not done
this before so we are not able to make comparisons with
past times.

Following on directly from a request in the last newsletter the drinking fountain near the 15th tee is to be
replaced with a brand new one and relocated to a more accessible location in the same area thanks to a generous
donation from the Immediate Past Captain, Michael Rush. We will look forward to having a drink with him!
Our New Director - Brett Smart
I was born in 1974 at the City Hospital and grew up in and around Wollaton and
Bramcote, with schooling at Fernwood School and Bilborough College. I’m married to
Dominique and we have a little girl named Dorothy, aged one.
I’ve always been a keen sportsman having played most sports including cricket for
Bramcote CC and football for Wollaton FC from the age 8 to more recently playing in
the veterans. I joined Breadsall Priory GC in 1998 before joining Wollaton Park GC in
2012. I have played the vast majority or courses in Notts. and Derbys. and many others
around the country.
My lowest handicap was 9.8 before breaking a leg in a charity football match at the City
Ground last year. My handicap is currently 10.6 with the aim of getting back to single
figures next summer. I have scored two holes in one, including the 8th at WPGC.
I have been working for over 25 years in sports and broadcasting. I currently work for
Sky Sports as a Floor Manager covering football matches around the country. I have
worked in Europe covering football matches and other sporting events including the 2012 Olympic Games. The
majority of my work is at weekends so this allows me the time to take on the role of Chair of Competitions, Matches
and Handicaps at WPGC, which I am proud to do. I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and all
decisions we make as a committee will, hopefully, be for the good of all members. Rules and regulations are in place
for a reason and I would ask all members to respect these for themselves and other members.
I like to think of myself as an honest, hard working and approachable guy and look forward to talking to many members in the coming weeks.
Brett Smart ([email protected])
David Parnham stepped down from the General Committee at the recent AGM. He has been an important
member of the committee for nearly 4 years, overseeing the Competitions, Matches and Handicaps Committee.
In addition he has applied his wide professional skills, especially those relating to HR, his experience of being
Captain of his previous club and his abundant common sense, to a wide range of policy decisions as well as
drafting many essential documents on behalf of the club. Although David will be sadly missed we have been
very lucky to “recruit” Brett Smart to this position. Thank you Dave.
10 Natural Laws that Ruin Golf
1. Brand new balls are attracted to water. This cannot be proven in the laboratory but it is a known fact that the more
expensive the ball the greater the attraction.
2. The higher your handicap the more qualified you deem yourself to be an instructor.
3. Golf balls from the same sleeve display similar flight characteristics, following each other out of bounds.
4. On hilly courses the laws of gravity do not always apply. Shots aimed to bring the ball down off a mound and on
to the green result in uphill bounces into long grass.
5. A golfer hitting a ball into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group, but you hit your ball into
another group and you will be confronted by four huge men.
6. Topping a three iron is the most painful torture known to a golfer. (Can you still get a three iron?)
7. Electric golf trolley batteries always go flat at the furthest point from the clubhouse.
8. The person you would most hate to lose to will always be the person that beats you.
9. The last three holes will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be.
10.Golf should be given up for good at least twice a year.
Good to see the Winter League matches are now underway. Two members of the General Committee, chatting
over coffee in the lounge agreed the date of their match. It was duly played and they went to enter their score on
the results sheet only to find that they are actually in different divisions! Good to know the club is in safe hands.

This ode is about John Lower by name,
A golf professional we should all agree of considerable fame.
For 25 years he has served Wollaton Park,
Often at his shop from dawn ‘til dark.
It may surprise you to know – he was a pupil at Nuneaton Grammar
With success at A-level Maths you would have thought he would clamour
For an academic career.
But no – he would strive to make those great drives,
Deft chips and putts that bring golfers alive.
From Nuneaton he went to Burton-on-Trent,
With considerably more hours on the fairway he spent.
Honing his skills, professional attitude and spark, How’s this for an unplayable lie!
Until the call came to lead the line at Wollaton Park.
His legendry memory for names is uncanny,
And knowing all the rules he is really quite savvy.
He has battled and succeeded in many a comp,
But no one would accuse him of bluster or pomp.
His engaging smile and warm handshake – many seek,
And how long he listened to those who speak,
Of missed putts, pulled drives and strange shanks,
All correctable with tuition from John – for which we give thanks.
John, we are so indebted for your dedication and time
And hardly anyone can remember a single whine.
We all join together in a great shared thought,
Such professionalism and friendship – as yours – can never be bought.
Captains’ Charities
Neil has chosen Diabetes UK and The Alzheimer's Society as his charities and
would be most grateful for raffle prizes and/or auction items that may be used
over the year to raise funds for these worthwhile causes. Items may be left with
the Secretary or given to Neil. Caroline’s charity is Cardiomyopathy UK
Longest Drive
Joe Miller recently won the 2016 World Long Drive Championship after a huge
423-yard effort in the final. That wasn’t even the 31-year-old Englishman’s
longest hit though after he whacked a 439-yard effort to win the semi-final!
Leonie Muir
Leonie, Tom Muir’s daughter, won the Lee Westwood Trophy in July at Worksop
GC and the Junior Girls County Order of Merit for 2016. She was also the “Most
Improved Lady Golfer” at WPGC for 2016. She was only allocated her first handicap of 12 at the start of the season and now plays off 9.4. She is 13 years old!

A course for all seasons
A very big thank you to all our staff who have had to work in the cold clubhouse during the replacement of the boiler. It was scheduled to be completed
in September but had to be delayed because of the complicated nature of the
works required and has also its taken longer than expected to install. The
Club truly appreciates your support during this difficult time.
