(Print the following for your small group leaders.) God cared for Elijah by allowing a widow to help him. Today, kids will learn that God can use them to help others, too. Encourage kids to help one another by playing a game that requires working together to accomplish a task. •• Spread a bed sheet on the floor. Crumple three sheets of red paper and three sheets of blue paper. Place the paper wads in the middle of the sheet. •• Form two teams of kids: red team and blue team. Invite kids to sit around the edges of the sheet and ensure that no player is sitting next to his own teammate. •• Tell kids to pick up the sheet and to work together to bump the other team’s paper wad off without bumping out their own. •• Option for younger kids: Instead of playing in teams, guide all kids to work together. Kids will try to keep the paper wads on the sheet while making waves. •• Option: Play this game with balloons or Ping-Pong® balls. I was just double-checking my flashlight to make sure it’s working properly, and I’ve put new batteries in my headset. I’d better check in with our lighting crew to see how they’re coming along on preparations, too. (speaks into headset) Light team, do you have those generators ready in case we lose power? … Great! … You’re sure? … Absolutely sure? … No, I’m not nervous. I’m just being responsible … yeah, that’s it. I’m being responsible! … Thanks. (Begin playing thunder clap sound effect.) (nervous but tries to remain calm and upbeat) Well, it sounds like our light team is ready! (jumps at sound of thunder) I really don’t like storms. They’re so loud and scary! (jumps at another clap of thunder; becomes more nervous) (nervously) OK … OK … Everything’s going to be just fine. As long as the lights don’t go out, I don’t have to panic. (Lights begin to flicker and go dark; thunder still booming.) AHHHH!! NOW IT’S TIME TO PANIC! MAYDAY! MAYDAY! … Where’s my flashlight?! (clicks on flashlight; obviously nervous and distressed) (speaks into headset) Guys? Hello? … Thank goodness! There you are! It’s really, really dark, and I’m super-DUPER afraid! … Yes, I know that God is with me. I just get really scared sometimes. … You’re praying for me to be brave? Wow! Thanks! You know, I’m not feeling so scared anymore. (Lights begin to flicker back on.) Oh, wait! The power is back! (speaks into headset; relieved) Thanks, team for talking me through that and for reminding me that God was with me. Your prayers really helped me to not be so afraid. True 2 life Drama Description: We see how God can encourage one person, and how that encouragement can spread to others at an outdoor seating area of a coffee shop. (Person #1 and Person #2 are already sitting at a table, drinking coffee. Person #5 is sitting on the floor inconspicuously at one side of the stage, reading a magazine or book. Person #5 remains silent and inconspicuous until the end.) Person #1: I got here as quickly as I could. You sounded pretty desperate on the phone. Person #2: Thanks for coming … I just don’t know what to do. Person #1: What is it? What’s going on? Person #2: I feel … I feel like my life is falling apart. No matter how hard I try to make things better, it never seems to work out the way I want. Person #1: Like what? Give me an example. Person #2: Well, like … my mom. She isn’t doing well right now, so she calls me all of the time. I’m trying to get a promotion at work, so taking my mom’s calls doesn’t look good. I’m also usually up late, sending emails and texts to coworkers and taking their phone calls. I have to form relationships with the right people from work. I love my mom, but I just don’t know how to balance everything. Person #1: What, exactly, are you trying to balance? WORSHIP FOR LIFE | ELEMENTARY SPECIAL FOCUS 10 WORSHIP Person #2: I mean, I love my mom. I want to be there for her. I just want to make sure I reach my goals in life, too. Person #1: How are all of your efforts to get noticed at work, um, working out? Person #2: It’s like a never-ending thing. No matter what I do, it never seems like I do enough. (Person #3 walks onto the stage and sits down at the empty table. During the next part of the dialogue, Person #3 should make it obvious he/she just realized he/she has no money. Person#3 should also non-verbally communicate that he/she is having a really tough day.) Person #1: So, what you’re saying is … you’re giving a lot of time to people who don’t care if you succeed or not, and you don’t have enough time to give to the person who has loved you since the day you were born? Person #2: Oh, I’ve never thought of it that way before. What should I do? Person #1: I can’t tell you what to do, but I can tell you what I always do. Person #2: What’s that? Person #1: I pray. Person #2: I used to pray a lot. I guess … I guess I just let my faith get away from me. Person #1: Let’s pray right now. Person #2: Right now? In public? Person #1: Yes. C’mon, we can pray quietly. (Person #1 and Person #2 get close and do a short whisper prayer, not letting the audience hear what they say. As they’re praying, they both notice Person #3.) Person #2: Amen. Thanks so much, I feel a lot better. I feel like I need to think of myself less and care more for my mom. I may not be able to help her physical health, but I can encourage her and help her smile. I think that is the most important thing, right now. Person #1: There are a lot of people who need encouragement right now. Person #2: You mean, like that person over there? WORSHIP FOR LIFE | ELEMENTARY SPECIAL FOCUS 11 WORSHIP Person #1: You noticed, too? Person #2: I’ll be right back. (Person #2 rushes offstage and comes back with a cup of coffee and two $5 bills. Person #2: I couldn’t help but notice … it looks like you’re having a rough day. Person #3: I am. I’ve just got some stuff going right now and to make things worse … I left home without my [wallet or purse]. Person #2: I thought so. Here. (hands coffee and two $5 bills to Person #3) Person #3: Oh, my goodness. Thank you so much. But, what is the $10 for? Person #2: This is if you want to grab something to eat as well. I hope it helps your day be a little better. Person #3: Thank you, thank you so much. Person #2: I’ve gotta go, but it was nice meeting you. Person #3: Nice meeting you, too. Bye. (Person #1 and Person #2 walk offstage. Immediately, Person #4 walks onstage, talking on his/ her phone. Person #4 sits down at the empty table.) Person #4: I’m sorry, Sweetie, we just can’t afford it. I’m trying to find another job right now. I can’t even afford to get a cup of coffee. I wish I could give you everything right now, but I just can’t. I’ll be home a little later. Love you. Bye. (Person #4 sits down exhaustedly. STORYTELLER (Show Bible Story slide.) Hey, everyone! I want to tell you about a man named Elijah. Elijah was a prophet of God in the Old Testament. He traveled around and said things that God wanted him to tell people. Even though Elijah told God’s messages to His people, the people were very disobedient. So God caused a great drought to come upon the land. The land was dry. No rain means no crops! There was nothing for Elijah, the prophet, to eat or drink. But during this time, God took care of Elijah … and comforted him. “Go to Zarephath,” God told Elijah. “I have commanded a widow to provide for you there.” So Elijah did what God commanded. When he arrived in Zarephath, the widow was gathering wood. “Please bring me a little water and a little bread,” Elijah asked. (Open Bible.) Let’s read 1 Kings chapter 17, verses 12-14. But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I don’t have anything baked—only a handful of flour in the jar and a bit of oil in the jug. Just now, I am gathering a couple of sticks in order to go prepare it for myself and my son so we can eat it and die.” Then Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid; go and do as you have said. But first make me a small loaf from it and bring it out to me. Afterward, you may make some for yourself and your son, for this is what the Lord God of Israel says, ‘The flour jar will not become empty and the oil jug will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the surface of the land.’ ” Do you know what happened next? The woman obeyed Elijah, and the next day, there was enough flour and enough oil to make bread for Elijah, herself, and her son! God provided enough to feed them for many, many days. And just as Elijah had said, neither the widow’s flour nor her jar of oil ran out! WORSHIP FOR LIFE | ELEMENTARY SPECIAL FOCUS 15 WORSHIP But that’s not the end of the story. Later, the woman’s son became very sick and died. The woman ran to Elijah, asking, “Why did this happen?” Let’s read verses 19-23. (Open Bible and read verses.) But Elijah said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him from her arms, brought him up to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed. Then he cried out to the Lord and said, “My Lord God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow I am staying with by killing her son?” Then he stretched himself out over the boy three times. He cried out to the Lord and said, “My Lord God, please let this boy’s life return to him!” So the Lord listened to Elijah’s voice, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived. Then Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, “Look, your son is alive.” Wow! Can you believe that? When Elijah brought the healed boy to his mother, she said, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that God’s word in you is true.” God comforted and provided for Elijah! But it didn’t end there—God also took care of the widow and her son! Can you name some ways that God provided for them? (Allow for responses—with flour and oil for food until the drought ended and it rained; by healing the widow’s son.) God did something that only God could do—He heard Elijah’s prayers and answered! (Show Life Point slide.) With God, ANYTHING is possible! He is the source of comfort and can use people to comfort others. Can you think of a time in your life when you’ve needed comfort and God has provided it? (pauses) What about when He’s provided comfort through others for you? (pauses) (Show Christ Focus slide.) God sent Jesus and the Holy Spirit to comfort us. Let’s pray and thank God for being our comforter. (Play soft music under prayer.) Dear God, You are the source of all comfort. Your Word promises comfort, peace, and love. Your perfect love shows how much You care for us. God, inspire us to show Your love and comfort to others. Let our actions honor You so that others will want to know and love You. May Your name be high and lifted up, as the Bible says, so that only You receive the praise. In Jesus’ name … Amen.
