Dear Families,
This year is flying by! We can’t believe it is May and we are starting our last month of school. It has been a
wonderful year watching your children grow academically and socially and we are so proud of them!
This month we are enjoying science and nature. After three weeks of studying caterpillars and butterflies, we
can now watch metamorphosis in action with our very own classroom caterpillars! Ask your child what phase
of the life cycle is happening in our classroom and see if they can use some of the vocabulary from The Very
Hungry Caterpillar to describe the caterpillar, chrysalis or butterfly.
In addition to watching our caterpillars, we are observing the seeds we recently planted. We have predicted
how long we think it will take for our seeds to sprout and we are logging our daily observations.
May starts our unit on Nursery Rhymes. Children always have fun memorizing and acting out these silly
rhymes. We will turn our dramatic play into a bakery to make curds and whey for Little Miss Muffet, muffins
for the Muffin Man or a cake to bake while singing “Pat-A-Cake”. In our sensory table the children will retell
“Hey Diddle Diddle” while playing with the cow, dog, dish, spoon and letters to match with the objects. We
will have blocks that look like bricks to make a wall for Humpty Dumpty and we will complete some science
experiments to see if an egg would really crack if it fell off a wall. There will also be lots of opportunities in art
to create their favorite nursery rhyme characters. Have fun at home practicing Nursery Rhymes or even
making up your own!!
As we wind down the school year we will complete the Jolly Phonics alphabet. The children love learning our
songs each week and are getting very good at remembering the motion and sound for each letter.
We look forward to seeing everyone at Moms and Muffins on May 5th at 10 AM. If Mom can’t make it, feel
free to invite another special person in your child’s life.
