The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each category and section of our local science fair will also be eligible to display their projects and compete for ribbons/medals at the Mendocino County Science Fair. Your child is invited on a voluntary basis to participate in the science fair. If your child decides to do a project, we urge you to support and encourage this endeavor. It is acceptable for you to assist your child with his or her project, but keep in mind that it must be primarily his or her own work. Judges will be looking at the amount of student involvement and effort in a project. Researching and displaying a science fair project gives students the opportunity to engage in scientific inquiry, maintain accurate records, and apply the skills and processes of a scientist. We also hope that it will stimulate an interest in science and encourage students to apply creative and critical thought to the solution of science problems. Additionally, we believe it is important to give public recognition to talented students for the work they have done. Please contact our science teacher, Cristin Allen for more information at 882-2131 ext. 311 or send an email to [email protected] Off Campus School Activities and School Sponsored Events Please remember we are guests at every school-sponsored activity (including sports) held at a venue off our campus. This includes other schools, businesses, public and private locations. As a guest, good behavior, respect for others and good judgment is expected of our students. We do receive feedback from host events on student conduct which is mostly always positive. Nothing makes us sadder than receiving a negative review on our students. In the interest of safety at a school event, being aware of one’s surroundings is essential as well as listening and following instructions from your teacher or coach. Please talk to your child about being safe and the responsibility of being a good guest, an audience member, a sport spectator, or a team player. Kindergarten Registration for the 2014-15 School Year Registration is scheduled for Friday, March 21st in the school library. Your child must be 5 year’s old before September 1, 2014 to register. Be prepared. Gather your child’s immunization records, birth certificate and come to school on registration day! Packets will be available after February 27th. 2 The Beacon February 2014 Health News February is Dental Awareness Month Cavity prevention is very important to a student's oral health. Young children cannot always tell when they have tooth pain and may suffer before it is treated. According to the California Dental Association, children should brush their teeth at least twice a day. In order to prevent bacterial build-up, it is most important to remember to brush before going to sleep. The best beverage is water. Sodas and sugary foods like sticky candy should be limited to little or none. A happy child has a happy smile! The Redwood Coast Dental Clinic in Point Arena is offering free dental screenings to all students. You may call 882-2189 for an appointment. Dental Decay MOVING FORWARD. TOGETHER. Cavities are preventable and caused by certain types of bacteria (germs) that live in your mouth. Bacteria stick to the film on your teeth called plaque. The bacteria feed on what you eat, especially sugars (including fruit sugars) and cooked starch (bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, etc.). About 5 minutes after you eat, or drink, the bacteria begin making acid as they digest your food. This acid can break down the tooth’s outer surface and dissolve valuable minerals that protect your teeth. The result is cavities. DENTAL DECAY PROCESS Bacteria/Germs + Acid + Healthy Tooth Sweets, Food, Drinks, Sugar = = Acid Produced Cavity You are not born with the bacteria that cause cavities. These bacteria are usually transferred to you at a young age by your primary care taker, most often your mother. To reduce the chances of passing the bacteria to your children, avoid sharing utensils, straws or other items that may have saliva on them. How to Prevent Decay • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste • Clean between teeth daily with floss • Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacking • Visit your CDA member dentist regularly for professional cleanings and exams • Ask your dentist about: o Dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts o Xylitol gum and mints o Fluoride treatments including varnish *Information provided by Christina Chapman, RN, PHN and the California Dental Association 3 Presidential Trivia Quiz 1.
