Guide To Spring Term 1 2016

Year 6
Guide To
Spring Term 1
2016
Our curriculum at Summerlea is creative and designed to forge links
between the different areas of learning. Each topic we study is led by a
driving question to get us thinking. We have listed the main curriculum
areas that will be addressed through each question and have given a
brief outline of what we will be learning.
This half term our driving question will be…
“What Would Life Be Like
Without The Greeks?”
History: Kicking off with a fact hunt, we will be researching Ancient
Greek life and achievements and how these have influenced our lives
today. Within this, we will focus on famous influential Greeks, Greek
myths, democracy and political systems, and the Olympics.
Geography: We will be using atlases and maps to locate Greece
and other European countries and to identify how and why the Greek
Empire grew. We will also research the climate, landscape and land
use of Ancient Greece, using this information in our story writing.
English: Travelling back in time, we will create a ‘decision story’
which will have 59 different outcomes as the reader decides which
path to follow. The children will use their research of Ancient Greece
and myths to ensure the settings, events and characters are historically
accurate. We will then publish an interactive version of the story!
Maths:
Our main objectives are to:
Read and write numbers with up to 7-digits, understanding what each digit
represents; solve subtraction of 5-digit and 6-digit numbers using written column
method (decomposition).
Multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000; compare and order numbers with up to
three decimal places; know common fraction / decimal equivalents; multiply pairs of
unit fractions and multiply unit fractions by non-unit fractions.
Use partitioning to mentally multiply 2-digit numbers with one decimal place by
whole 1-digit numbers; multiply numbers with two decimal places; use short
multiplication to multiply amounts of money; use long multiplication to multiply 3digit and 4-digit numbers by numbers between 10 and 30.
Name, classify and identify properties of quadrilaterals; explore how diagonal lines
can bisect quadrilaterals; understand what an angle is and that it is measured in
degrees; know what the angles of triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and
octagons add to and use these facts and mathematical reasoning to calculate missing
angles; recognise and identify the properties of circles and name their parts; draw
circles using pairs of compasses; draw polygons using a ruler and a protractor.
Add and subtract numbers using mental strategies; solve addition of 4- to 7-digit
numbers using written column addition; solve subtraction of 5-, 6- and 7-digit
numbers using written column method (decomposition); solve additions and
subtractions choosing mental strategies or written procedures as appropriate; read,
understand and solve word problems.
Identity common factors and common multiples; understand that a prime number
has exactly two factors and find prime numbers less than 100; understand what a
composite (non-prime) number is; use long division to divide 3- and 4-digit numbers
by 2-digit numbers, giving remainders as a fraction, simplifying where possible.
Any help at home with learning number facts, times-tables and telling the
time would be beneficial!
Talk to your child’s class teacher for ways to help.

Exciting days and trips:
Topic kickstart Tuesday 5th January 2016
PE Days:
Monday afternoon – indoor PE
Wednesday afternoon – outside PE (please ensure your child has a
separate jumper for this as they may get wet!)
Homework:
Spellings: We are currently reviewing our approach to sending spellings
home. More information will follow shortly and children will be
bringing words home to practise soon.
Maths: set on a Thursday, due in the following Monday
Coats/snacks/drinks and equipment:
Please ensure your child has appropriate clothing for cold/wet weather
as we will often still go out when it’s raining. Please remember to
ensure they have a separate jumper for outdoor PE and can wear
longer trousers/jogging bottoms.
Maths café:
Maths café will continue on a Thursday morning (7.30am) from
Thursday 14th January. This is currently for the same children who
attended last term but we will be reviewing this and will let you know if
we would like your child to attend if they don’t already.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your child’s class teacher if you
have any concerns or queries; our doors are always open.
