Subjects and Predicates By: Teacher Zoé M Benítez SHS 4th Grade Remember: • A sentence expresses a complete thought. • There are 4 kinds of sentences: • Declarative, Interrogative, Exclamatory, Imperative • A sentence has two main parts: • Subject and Predicate Subject • The Subject is the part of the sentence that tells whom or what the sentence is about. It is found at the beginning of the sentence. • All the words in the Subject make up the Complete Subject. • Examples: • Today is a sunny day. Subject The students read the story. Subject Predicate • The Predicate is the part of the sentence that tells what the subject is or does. It begins with the Verb and it is the second part of the sentence. All the words in the Predicate make up the Complete Predicate. • Example: The students write in the notebook. Predicate Practice: Identify the Subject and the Predicate of these sentences: • • • • • • • • Example: The kids splash in the waves. 1. Two children swim to the raft. 2. Marie and Lola work at the beach. 3. They are lifeguards. 4. Lifeguards watch swimmers carefully. 5. The snack store sells lots of good food. 6. Everyone likes the ice cream sandwiches. 7.
